Jimmy_D Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 Looking back, with football, results can fall one way or the other on a knife edge. Leeds is the one that comes to mind immediately. Without that world class goalkeeping masterclass, we might be looking at a playoff lottery right now. West Ham have thrown away so many points by drawing games they've dominated. Thinking about it, we've face serious challenges for the top spots from Cardiff, Middlesborough, Birmingham... there must be moments in their seasons where it all went wrong. Then again, we've missed out on the title by a single point. You think back recently to that 40-50 pass move that we didn't finish off against Middlesborough that would have made it 2-0, or even the late equaliser Pompey got against us... What are the moments that stick in other people's mind this season?
Ewell Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 Definitely an opportunity missed but that’s football.
Saintjersey Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 The Leeds game was the turning point in the season for me, it is when I knew we were destined for promotion.
M271 Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 That last minute Norris goal for Pompey, really thought the past few weeks that it was going to be the one (with us dropping 2 points) that would stop us getting auto promotion.
miserableoldgit Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 The Reading home game did it for me. Just think what the position had been if we had won that one.
Sheaf Saint Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 The Leeds game was the turning point in the season for me, it is when I knew we were destined for promotion. Yep. Knew from that moment on that we had the cahoonas for a fight and that it would take something either spectacular or extremely lucky to stop us.
Leslie Charteris Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 Losing to Blackpool really shook my confidence, but luckily not the team's...
Dellman Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 It was Millwall away, getting those TWO penalties in the last five mins turned no points into three! I started to believe
SO5 4BW Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 None of it matters, not the Reading or Blackpool games, not the three skate goals. In August we're level with Reading and whoever comes up through the playoffs Couldn't possibly have expected this - a great season

It's just that I'm used to thinking how if it'd been different we might have succeeded instead of failing... (eg that last minute shot that was cleared off the line against Arsenal in the FA Cup final...) It's nice to look back from the other side of the fence for once.
Lighthouse Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 Millwall away. I was there and went mental. I remember thinking at the time, 'this is our MK Dons moment'
Jimmy_D Posted 28 April, 2012 Author Posted 28 April, 2012 See, this is why this thread was a good idea! I'd completely forgotten about how close we were to losing the Millwall game...
Jimmy_D Posted 28 April, 2012 Author Posted 28 April, 2012 To revel in the achievement. To realise how it might not have happened, so that we can enjoy the fact that it DID happen even more.
jampot Posted 28 April, 2012 Posted 28 April, 2012 Millwall away or West Ham at home (that was tense)
paulwantsapint Posted 29 April, 2012 Posted 29 April, 2012 Forest st SMS when rickie got the 1st hatrick & then we just passed the ball for the next 10 mins was quite impressive Ipswich or coventry away The last min goals weren't bad Reading Blackpool Millwall
