Nigel Adkins first game in charge was a 2-0 defeat at franchise FC watched by me and my then 7 year old boy, little could i have imagined that within less than 20 months we would be a premiership/premier league team.

a big thank you to Nigel,Rickie,Adam and all who have donned the red and white sash/stripes of the past 2 seasons,Markus will be a very proud man looking down on us tonight, acheiving his goal with 2 year 2 spare.

I went to this game with my then 8 year old daughter. Cannot believe the progress we have made.

Yes I was there and if I remember correctly, Nige sneaked out at the start of the game and gave us a ripple of applause, the fans however, did not respond with any enthusiasm. I remember driving home in the rain, listening to his first 5Live interview, and he was talking about there "being quite a lot of work to do.."

I remember that there were padded seats, a very impressive stadium, an eerie atmosphere because it was barely a quarter full and that the team did not turn up. I have not often experienced that feeling since. I was at Orient in 1966, Fulham in 1978(?) and St Marys yesterday to see Saints clinch promotion to the top level. Curiously enough, as far as I can remember, I was far more nervous this time, maybe because on the other two occassions they were the penultimate matches of the season. However, once the 3rd went in I relaxed and it was fantastic that 32,000 Saints fans were there to see it. These are the days you want to have been there.

Forget the past Jeweller man, we are Premier League now, and history sucks!! No point getting all emotional over this. Oh and by the way, we moved grounds about 10 years ago x

The BBC interview with Adkins is superb. I think we have heard some more of this in the last 20 months!

Interestingly 8 of the team from that game were in the 16 man squad last Saturday!!

I've heard "took over when we were 22nd in League One" trotted out a few times since Saturday but seeing it in black and white in that link really brings it home! We have come far :D

So 8 weren't. In 20 months. That's quite some turnover really...

Your fall guys being : Seaborne (literally), Connolly, and subs Dickson, Jaidi, Mills, Wotton and Holmes. Plus Chamberlain, who we can't really say has "fallen".

Harding and Puncheon were on the bench rather than the team, so you could argue they're another 2 on their way out.

Wow! The feeling I have compared to how I felt back then, it's hard to believe it was less than 2 years ago.

Look at the table on the right hand side of that link!

The side we put out that day is just as good as the one we put out against Coventry. Especially if you were to add Lallana into it.

It's not actually true though, we were 18th when he took over, as Brentford, Hartlepool and Tranmere all overtook us with results the same day of Adkins' first match as Saints manager. Adkins may have had nothing to do with the lame duck side which lost against MK Dons, but he actually took us down into 22nd in his first match... we weren't 22nd when he took over as manager.

That match was the only occasion in 40 years of supporting Saints that I have left before the final whistle being so disappointed with the team's response to a new manager. In retrospect unreasonable expectations on my behalf perhaps. It didn't take Nigel Adkins long to instil some confidence and belief. It's telling that so many of the players that night were in Saturday's squad and it's testament to the fine job Nigel Adkins has done.

To be fair, Lambert was on poor form and had been injured, only playing 6 minutes in the first two matches, Lallana was injured (his last match before this was the 4-0 win before Pardew got sacked), and we'd just had weeks of caretaker manager ineptitude which coincided with Lallana's absence with a 2-0 defeat home to Rochdale, a 3-0 thrashing home to Swindon and a 1-0 league loss at Swindon (who ended up relegated).

We weren't anything like as bad as the league position appeared to show anyway.

I was there, problem was we just weren't 'Saints fit' in those days; Lambert clearly wasn't fit and we were pretty pedestrian everywhere that night. Seems crazy looking back .... 1500 fans away midweek in Lge one when we were off the back of a pretty ropey start to the season.

Especially as we'd been dire in the previous 3 matches and already played MK Dons 3 times in the previous 9 months.

What an exciting evening it was. To be fair I'd be happy to still be watching. New job since then which includes Saturdays so hardly been to any games this year (of all years)

TBF a lot had bought their tickets assuming it would be a saturday fixture and our first away game of the season.

Our performance stunk almost as much as the pig **** whiff that filled the air around the ground

Players came over at that the end to acknowledge the fans and got a load of abuse and jeers..... How things change.
