A View From Coventry

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to come on the site and say something which goes against my usual support for my team, and that is that I hope you win tomorrow and go up.

I think there are many many Coventry fans, who would agree, whilst wanting us to win our games, and support our team, tomorrows result is irrelevant to us, and very relevant to yourselves.

I have always liked the Saints as you seem to have similar fortunes to ourselves (well apart from SISU) and are a similar club. Also growing up in a period pre the Premier League I have seen many many Coventry Saints games, at a time when we were both longstanding in the old first divison, many of which were good entertaining games.

I am pleased to see your resurgence under a good manager, and can honestly say that missing out on SISU was one of the best things that ever happened to you.

Unlike the Skates who have continually lived beyond their means we are being run into the ground by a clueless bunch of faceless money grabbing leeches who have mortgaged everything at the club to the hilt and are now looking at cutting any funding. In short we are screwed. We may not exist in a years time.

I hope you get the result you want tomorrow, hope you succeed in the Premier League next season (look at swansea and Norwich it could easily be you) and hope when our white knight takes us over from SISU (wishfull thinking) that we meet you next in the Premier League in the future.

Do us a favour though, when you are two or three up tomoorow please if you can join in the SISU out chants in between celebrating it would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Moff (40 year old fed up depressed Coventry fan looking foward to an away day at Shrewsbury next year)

Fair play mate. I said on the 'SISU Out' thread elsewhere that we should show solidarity with the Cov fans tomorrow. Not just because, as we all know, it could very easily be us in your position, but also because any football fan should be uniting against the people who are destroying our clubs and our game.

I for one hope you find a way through it and I wish you all the best of luck for the future (after tomorrow when it would be great if you could let us have a few early ones, just to settle the nerves like).

I feel sorry for Coventry fans being lumped with numpties like SISU. Still, after the downs there are ups (unless you're Pompey :-D) so keep the faith. League One isn't as bad as it seems, I enjoyed going to games very much, and win a few mediochre games and you may even get a trip to Wembley.

As for tomorrow, there seem to be mixed emotions between Saints fans as to the result, but I remain in the confident camp. I do reckon you'll put up a fight and keep the score down, but hopefully not too much! I want us to go up, first and foremost, but it also has the second bonus of annoying West Ham fans. :-D

I wish u every luck in getting rid of the parasites as quickly as possible and hope u survive.

I too have always regarded our two clubs as similar in terms of history and size of city and therfore potential support level.

By the looks of the Coventry fans forum(s) there are a fair few who hold a similar view. It is a shame that we are going to play a football team tomorrow, and not the fans :) I am sure the Coventry players will not have such a generous spirit, and nor should we expect them to. I expect a tense, hard-fought game - however, should we find ourselves in a comfortable position towards the end of the match (if only!!) then I am sure the "SISU out" solidarity will materialise loud and clear for the TV viewers.

And for those Saints fans in the Coventry section - keep it civilised ;)

Thanks Moff - great post. I think most Saints fans will never forget how close we came to being where you are now. I wish you well and hopefully we can get the SISU out chant going!

I have to agree, show some empathy tomorrow as opposed to the going down chant I am sure will be appreciated, in fact ban the going down chant altogether, I for one do not like it as I always think that it was once us.

Thankyou Moff.

Having seen what has happened to Cov first hand over the last few years I really hope that for the sake of you, and all my CCFC supporting mates that the situation gets turned around soon. Do have a good day out tomorrow, you will be amongst friends.

I've always though of Coventry as kind of a sister club. Both staying in the Prem for decades despite all odds. Similar size. Heck we even wore the same Danish kit between 89 and 90.

Can you agree to cheer for us if we agree to sing 'SISU out' after were 2 or 3 up??

Quite agree.

Replace "Going down" chant with "You'll come back stronger!"

and

"See you back in the Prem"

and when we've won

"SISA out"

Unfortunately I don't think that the majority of the North Stand (from whom the "going down" stuff will emanate) are going to be reading this thread.

All the best Cov, whilst I have absolutely no connection with the city I feel for the fans who have had to put up with a lot because that was us for a long time too. That and the fact that we were both scrapping away in the prem together for many years makes me feel a connection too.

My honest view is that I think you're going to have to go through the fire of administartion before you rid yourself of the current blood suckers so a drop to league 1 might hasten the process for you.

Also League 1 isn't so bad, it maybe the making of you if you can finally turn things around and start moving in an upwards trajectory.

All the best - still hope we stuff you though.

You are very welcome Moff. I too have always considered us and Coventry to be very similar clubs. When I first started following Saints in the late 80s we were both considered to be small fish in a big pond and I remember a few really good games between us. Though I wasn't at all happy when we ended up signing David Speedie off you! But there is more to it than the football. The two cities are similarly sized and both suffered unwanted facelifts by the Germans in the 40s.

I really feel sorry for you as fans because of the situation you now find yourself in, and I am so grateful that we managed to stave off the SISU threat because we could now be in exactly the same situation. Let's not be unclear - we hit the jackpot when Markus Liebherr bought us, and it seems that your lot drew the short straw. It could so easily have been the other way round. Obviously relegation is a horrible thing to experience, but I think you may find you will actually enjoy L1 in a strange way, as I did - although I was extremely glad we got out of it when we did.

I wish you and your fellow fans good fortune for the future - starting on sunday, obviously!!!!!

Thanks for the post Moff, we know what your going through! Coventry have always seemed very similar to ourselves & feel nothing but contempt for SISU. As most have said we had a lucky escape from them. But to be frank I feel we were just used as a stalking horse to push your board over the edge, to sell to them! Looks like you may have to go through an administration to get shot of them & start to rebuild. After Saturday I hope you can start the road to recovery.

Always had a soft spot for Coventry. Used to like going to games at Highfield Road & remember some great wins ..... MLT having big Oggie routed to the spot for a free kick, Egil's winner on first game of one season, Bruce's 'dodgy' game.

Also remember the 5-5 game at the The Dell (please do repeat tomorrow) ... was that the game where Keegans wonder goal was disallowed for Armstrong being offside ??

Good luck for Cov for next season & hope they bounce back soon !

Always liked Cov. Like Southampton both destroyed by the Luftwaffe leading to god awful City Centre planning, 2 unfashionable top division clubs for a generation, some great "cult heroes" (Steve Ogrizivic, Le Tiss etc) and the ability to upset the bigger sides now and again.

Last season in League 1 was my best ever supporting Saints since the mid 80's. Brilliant away days, off the back of a Wembley trip, home wins, proper fans and real football.

Good luck with SISA and next season.

As for the OP, good luck to your lot for next season and as has been said its actually alright down in L1, some good away trips you (ought) to win more than you lose, will surely be top 6 and enjoy winning more than losing.

Thnaks Moff - but will your palyers feel the same way??

I do feel for the genuine Coventry fans and the treatment they heve received from the SISU hedge fund gamblers. I used to see Coventry occasionally when I lived in Leamington and have a soft spot for you. Hopefully you will bounce back.

Hi Moff (and any other Cov fans that happen to be reading the site)

Thanks for posting and certainly Coventry are a club that our fans have always felt an affinity with, rather like Norwich as well. I used to enjoy trips to watch Saints at the old Highfield Rd in the 90s and also had the pleasure of spending some time with some top Cov lads on the England West Indies cricket tour in 2004. Mind you, one of the Cov lads didn't entirely heed the local warnings about the strength of the local rum punch on the infamous Jolly Roger boat in Barbados and after an unplanned excursion trip overboard it took 4 locals to get him back on ship! Hopefully Coventry will back and SISU-free just as quickly.

Is Ken What's-his-name still involved at Coventry? The one that used to be on our board during the grim George Burley era?

No the idiot decided to sit on the bench, yes the bench, with the coaching staff earlier this year, and after the awful press that followed (and has generally been attached to us all year) Mr Ken 'orange tan' Duliey was forced to resign...only to be replaced by another clueless sod.

It says something when your board has more incomings than the squad but thats just a small part of the story!

Thanks Moff

In my younger years, my best mate was a Sky Blue - One of the few around in the east of England I suspect but I remember watching the 1987 cup final with him on the pub TV and was cheering nearly as loudly as he was. He started the chant of "Killer Killer" when Kilcline lifted the cup and our entire pub joined in!

While I hope ( and in all fairness expect us ) to win tomorrow, I wish you well in Division 1 and a speedy return back to the CCC. As others have mentioned, Div 1 can be a great experience ( no prawn sandwich brigades in sight), but it is a ***** of a league to get out of. Hopefully you will rid yourselves of these hedge fund morons and build again.

Good luck after 3pm tomorrow

That's awful, and to think that our fans moaned about Rupert Lowe being in the pre-season team photo during the Strachan era! Rupert had his faults, and he is certainly isn't in the same calibre as running the club now, but I don't think he'd have sunk that low and at least had a focus on infrastructure before the SCW saga took him badly off course.

Really hope we can get one or two songs going in solidarity with the Coventry fans if we are winning comfortably in the 2nd half, so lucky that they didn't take us over, as desperate as people were to oust Guy Askham's old circle. If you can get SISU out, probably via administration, and have a couple of rebuilding seasons, I think you'll arrest the stagnation and be making a promotion push at the Ricoh in front of the 20k+ fans that you can easily attract with some forward momentum.

Speaking as a CV postcode resident, married to a cov bees supporter and an occassional blaze watcher, the plight of Coventry does sadden me even if it does come with a sigh of relief that it could of been us. Count on my support for SISU out! and I feel for my Cov supporting friends. If its any consolation, I quite enjoyed the couple of seasons in division1

Thanks for the honest post Moff. A lot of us Saints have been where you are and it's not very pleasant but as many posters have already said 'Div 1' has it's good points.

As far as SISU is concerned why not sing

S...I...S...U Just F..k off we don't need you?

Repeat many times.

PS. We will beat you tomorrow and no hard feelings implied.

Chin up mate. At home it will probably feel poor atmosphere wise, with even smaller away crowds, but away games will be good. Orient and Brentford are always great fun if you fancy a pint or three before or after a game.

Good Luck to Cov after tomorrows game we have to get all 3 points you should look forward to League 1 the standard of football was better than I thought it would be there are some good aways days to be had & the league 1 fans are proper football fans not a plastic in sight.

All the very best getting SISU out it was so nearly us in your shoes thanks for the good wishes

Does 'gay boy in the sunglasses' still travel away with Coventry?

Anyone else remember that incident? Saints v Cov - night game down The Dell when the away fans were in the East Stand.

It was funny for about a minute. Just as the chant got going properly Cov went and scored. He got the last laugh.

I was in amongst the coventry fans away this season (hospitality) and I felt really sorry for them then. Seemed a decent lot, and there but for the grace of god we might have gone with SISU. I certainly won't be chanting 'going down' and will happily join in with a SISU out when we are 2 or 3 up. Although I'll do so very quietly of course because I'm in the Kingsland centre.

Agree with lots of the posts above, I am glad we are out of Div 1 however, had a great time - did more away games than previously as affordable, remember great banter with the Dag and Redbridge goalie during the match!!! It also brought us a wembly trip which helped with missing the playoffs that season - good luck.

My first visit to the Dell was that 8 - 2 game. My second was Saints 2 Cov 1 the following year which incidentally was the same day as the Bradford fire.

the Saints Coventry love-in develops....

A lovely post on the Sky Blues Forum... (from the OP)

-----------

I am not ashamed to admit, I would be pleased for them tomorrow to beat us and go up, as it would offer some hope that teams who have been to the wall can rise again and succeed.

I wish them every success,

After posting on one of their forums about our woes, and tomorrows game, I can honestly say that they are the most respectfull, friendly, intelligent bunch and the best posters I have ever come accross on a rival fans forum.

Just my opinion of course, but of all the clubs I watched our team play into my now 41st year, I feel more of an affinity to them in terms of team, history, fans etc than many others.
