Golactico Posted 26 April, 2012 Share Posted 26 April, 2012 I need to change the washer on our bathroom sink tap. I'm no DIYer but I can usually manage this job. However, I can't for the life of me work out how to disassemble the head gear on this tap: http://www.diy.com/nav/rooms/bathrooms/bathroom-taps/plumbsure/-specificproducttype-crystal/Plumbsure-Crystal-Bath-Taps-11477545. Cross head taps normally have a bit on the top that you prise off to get to the screw, but there isn't such a bit on this tap, and no obvious other way of getting inside it. I feel a bit daft resorting to this, but any advice gratefully received.
Fowllyd Posted 26 April, 2012 Share Posted 26 April, 2012 Looks to me as if the cap on the top of the handle should unscrew, revealing a screw beneath it - there's definitely a join on the picture you've linked. Remove this piece and the handle comes off. You'll then need to unscrew the top half of the tap body to get to the washer. You may need an adjustable wrench to grip the top, but if you do be careful not to scratch it - best to use something like an old piece of cloth between the wrench and the tap. mcjwills Posted 26 April, 2012 Share Posted 26 April, 2012 First and foremost turn the water off. There is a litle cap on the top, prise it off with a flatblade srewdiver, undo the screw in the top and lift the handle off. Wrap a bit of cloth around the angle cap piece on the base and place some pipegrips and turn anticlockwise. Once the cap is off just unscrew the top of the tap off. Prise off the washer and replace with new. Inspect the seat of the tap for no cuts or damage. May need reseating if so call an expert if not just repeat operation in reverse. HTH. Golactico Posted 26 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 26 April, 2012 Brilliant! I'd tried prising with a screwdriver with no luck, but thanks to your advise Fowllyd, I managed to screw it off with an adjustable spanner and a bit of cloth. I will now follow your advice Mcjwills to do the hard part. I'm really, really grateful to you both for taking the time to reply, and so quickly. hamster Posted 26 April, 2012 Share Posted 26 April, 2012 If you do put a finger in the revealed hole where the washer screws down please be careful as there are often some very sharp edges in there. Well done for using a cloth too, many a nice tap has had the chrome ruined and in my experience you get a much nicer grip with a damp cloth anyway. I use a piece of masking tape, that usually gives enough grip.
Bath Saint Posted 27 April, 2012 Share Posted 27 April, 2012 You do know, of course, that we have our very own plumber/handyman expert on the forum going by the moniker of Junction9. I'm told he offers exceptionally good rates for fellow Saints fans.
saint francis Posted 27 April, 2012 Share Posted 27 April, 2012 Junction 9 fitted an entire central heating system in my place for a very good price. It was funny one time, I came home, went upstairs and he had the wife's knicker drawer open and her undies spread all over the bed and everywhere. I thought wtf? but it turns out he noticed a fault with one of the drawers, which I didn't know we had, and he thought he'd fix it while he was up there, at no charge! Highly recommended. If it's the same Junction 9, it is more likely to be your boxers on the bed, that he's cracking one off to.
