If it all goes pooey what about the playoffs?

Clearly it does take into consideration "finishing third" though, and all of the various methods of ending up there.

As already noted, 37.5% is better than 1/3 in a four horse race, which is pretty good going for a double-header against 6th and then a neutral match against 4th or 5th.

It's not as good as the odds of 100% which we can get by beating a team in the relegation zone though.

Yes, that is an overall figure which may have been boosted by those that ended up there without too much stress and may have been reduced by those who have fallen back at the last. Without more details as Patrick Moore might say, "we just don't know".

Did you learn nothing from Derby? There is no "away-goal rule" for the playoffs. Penalties where Lambert will score one and the rest of our team who've had no practice whatsoever would all miss :)

Ok, now I remember. With the assistance of Wikipedia for the scores, text is all mine :

The original rule was that away goals counted and there was no extra time (1997 Sheff U went through after a 1-1 and 2-2 without extra time being played, knocking out Ipswich). Then they changed it so that away goals didn't count until AFTER extra time.

George Burley's Ipswich then went out to Bolton due to away goals which were scored in extra time (in 1999 (1-0 and 3-4 aet)) which was also regarded as unfair as the away team in the second leg has an extra 30 minutes to score them, and they changed the rule so away goals didn't count at all.

This of course then cost Burley's Saints side as it was 2-1, 1-2 on 90 mins and we won 2-3 at Pride Park on the night. Same thing in reverse happened with Palace and Sunderland in 2004 as well.

Pointless thread we will win and go up in 2nd place on Saturday

It's not pointless as it's a possibility. Pretty much any combination of possibles is ripe for discussion at the moment.

Also, do you always pass off your opinion as fact even when you clearly have precisely zero proof that this will definitely happen ?

Well, there are plenty on here like DellDays giving it the big one and claiming to have no doubt, whilst calling others "wet fannies"

And plenty of others inhabiting the massive swathe of ground between the "definitely going up" liars and the "everyone who is worried is a wet fanny" liars.

This sort of arrogant complacency....er....."positivity" has always been acceptable on here

The play offs are absolute ********. It's a league competition and the league doesn't lie. The team who finish 3rd have proved that they are better than the team who finish 4th, 5th or 6th in a league competition. So why should they then develop a cup style knock out contest that allows lower placed teams to benefit?

And before you all start, I'm not covering my back in case Saints end up in the playoffs. I've never liked them. The only way they'd get my approval would be if it was 2 up and 2 down with the 3rd & 4th placed teams playing 3rd & 4th bottom from the league above. This creates a fight for survival and a battle to win promotion. Much more exciting. Infact, the playoffs we're similar to this when they started.

Difference is that most people's anxiety are proportionate to the situation. Playing a relegated Cov at home is all it is at the end of the day. We'd win this game 19 out of 20 according to bookies. Therefore I am 5% anxious and 95% excited for Sat.

Always think its a bit unfair that in Euro comps in that away goals do count when scored in extra time - eg say 2-1 and 2-1 both home wins and then if the away side score 1 in et teh home team have to get 2 to go through.... fairest is if all square on away goals after 180 mins - only golas scored in et count so if both score 1 in at, it goes to penalties...

I don't think "wet fannies" is appropriate either alps. Wet fannies implies excitement, people who are nervous and negative would properly be described as dry fannies.

I always think that. But mainly I think the away goals rule is dopey in all competitions now. I guess historically it represented the challenge of going somewhere foreign but how many times do Chelsea or whoever play abroad now? It's just normal. So deffo no away goals in the play offs. Scoring a goal at Bloomfield Road quite frankly is not worth double of anything.
