If it all goes pooey what about the playoffs?

At the moment the other play off teams seem to be Blackpool, Birmingham, Cardiff. To be promoted we'd have to get past 2 of them

We dropped 5 points against Blackpool

We dropped 5 points against Cardiff

We beat Birmingham at home comprehensively, but that was during our early-season purple patch. Away was a tough battle for a draw.

Conclusion: if we dont get auto we arent going up at all.

I am glad you are not the manager!

I really would not fancy our chances in the play offs. The dropping off in form combined with the disappointment would be a vary big hurdle to over come. Equally, I do not believe it will do West Hams chances any favours as they will be going through something very similar if they fail at that last hurdle.

We have an excellent chance of going up automatically by getting a result against Coventry. Bearing in mind Coventry are the sort of team we do better against of the bottom 3, poor away form against the best home form in the division, there is every reason to be optimistic.

Should things not work out for West Ham, it would not surprise me that the extended hope of automatic up to the last game will not be looked upon as a blessing.

Blackpool. It's a win-win situation.

If we win we go on to the playoff final, which we will win because the pressure is off.

If we lose, we get one of smirking Olly's priceless quotes about how Southampton think they're a big club but they ain't :(

Dear Mr Paranoid - I didn't even stop to look who posted it - rarely do. I just said what I thought - if we end up in the playoffs, I would hope that our manager takes a different view. That is all. Anyway, it is moot 'cos we are not going to be in the play-offs.

Speaking entirely objectively - if we do not beat Coventry on Saturday then we will not get promoted at all. Has any team that finished third ever been promoted? And Psychologically, having passed up several opportunities to make promotion safe and failed to do so, I don't think it would matter who we play. So COYR ON SATURDAY.

Look, forget who posted it and the bandwagon of animosity, FFS. WTF is wrong with what I wrote ? In addition our players attitudes are going to range from heartbroken to sulky, FFS.

Alps its just you state as fact that we wont go up if in the playoffs - just as many folk said Barcelona would **** on Chelsea - yes teh odds would against us goven the disspointment and difficulty in lifting the squad, yes teh opposition is tough, but no one is unbeatable and nothing is pre-ordained - thats why a few are having a go.

Well by your logic, we have 2 wins from 2 games away at Coventry this season, one with a reserve team. Face a home game againts them, best home record v worst away...No way we aren't going up automatically. You must be delighted?

If we can't beat Coventry on Saturday then we don't deserve to go up. Our home and their away record should see us win fairly comfortably. I just wish we had a leader on the field who can control and dictate the play, a premiership quality Bailey type character.

I am confident, but not in a shout-it-from-the-rooftops kind-of-way.

I have far too many years of supporting SFC behind me for that.

Lets be honest, if you could pick a team to have to beat in such a game from this league it'd be Coventry. If we dont win it wont be because Coventry have suddenly decided to play brilliantly after 45 games of being sh*t. It'll be because our players cracked, nothing else.

In a way, it's a shame Hull don't still have an outside shot of making the play-offs.

I'd take Cardiff in the semi, and if we got through, I'd like Brum in the final.

Blackpool should be avoided. They're a very attacking team and far too unpredictable, but as has been said, if we finish third on Saturday, we'll not win the play-offs, although of course we would deserve to...

As an aside, I am of the opinion that if we finish second the 3 teams up will be Reading, Saints, Hammers.

I just have this feeling that although being 3rd would still hurt them for a few days, what with their players playing at the higher level before, many having been relegated, and the fact that they had been playing catch-up to us for so long, that they would recover from the disappointment quicker and be better equiped to deliver the necessary performance in the play offs.

West Ham expect playoffs. There's a big difference with them coming 3rd now and us dropping to 3rd after being top 2 for 9 months.

That said, it'll still be tough for them given their financial necessity for promotion, and that most the country will be supporting their opposition. Have a feeling Cardiff might actually do it this time, making up for their cup final, determined to match Swansea etc. Those set pieces are always vital in tight playoff games too.

Really wouldn't want to see Marlon King get promoted, Birmingham bore me to death almost as much as Villa, and I can't stand Holloway. So really has to be Cardiff.

In fairness, if we come 2nd Wham do deserve to go up via the playoffs. The table doesnt lie. The playoff rule is b*llsh*t to generate extra revenue.

If we end up third then we play 6th place away first?

Who would you prefer Blackpool, Cardiff, Brum or Boro again?

Don't worry this is a thread to pass the time as it's ticking too slowly for me.

Not going to happen, we'll give Cov a good sendoff by dishing out a right beating at SMS.

It's a bit of a phantom game really - neither team will be in the champ next season.

Have a little faith.

9 times out of 24 in the Championship (or its equivalent). There was some discussion on this on another thread. 3 out of 8 or 37.5%. But that is an overall figure that does not take into account the psychological effect of leading all season and falling back at the last hurdle.

6 attempts.

1 win. Back in autumn.

Lucky that we wouldn't have to win any of the games then really ? 3 draws, with a win on away goals (after extra time) and penalties at Wembley would achieve the same end.

Clearly it does take into consideration "finishing third" though, and all of the various methods of ending up there.

As already noted, 37.5% is better than 1/3 in a four horse race, which is pretty good going for a double-header against 6th and then a neutral match against 4th or 5th.

It's not as good as the odds of 100% which we can get by beating a team in the relegation zone though.

Did you learn nothing from Derby? There is no "away-goal rule" for the playoffs. Penalties where Lambert will score one and the rest of our team who've had no practice whatsoever would all miss :)

On our day we can beat anyone over 2 games!

Do not fancy going back to Middlesboroughso soon after thinking we were going up when we played them on Saturday!

Would prefer Cardiff and then Birmingham in the final!

Saying this we will win on Saturday......if we cannot beat Coventry and home I will question how we plan on beating the other playoff teams!!

Whilst I wouldn't write off our chances in the play-offs completely I'd be very uneasy about them.

Our players look tired both physically and mentally. We have a large'ish squad but few actual players of a sufficient level just now.

Failure to achieve promotion directly now would be a massive blow to them all and I doubt that we'd recover from that by a week tomorrow.
