... with the worst records!

LEAST SUCCESSFUL PREMIER LEAGUE MANAGERIAL TENURES

"Les Reed, in 11th, might be the least successful manager on the list. He was appointed permanent boss of Charlton in November, but lost his job after just seven matches and has never managed since."

Steve Wigley 17th in the list. win % = 7%!

(Just to take our minds off Saturday)

If we had beaten Arsenal at Highbury that day it may have been a different story.........

Bit of an unfair table because of the wide range of games played between the entries, making the records of Graham Taylor and Mick McCarthy extra special....

But I still think Wigley is the worst manager we ever had.

I think Stuart Gray was worse. His record from taking over to the end of the season was atrocious; he kept his job by beating (I think) Man Utd and Arsenal, but their seasons were pretty much over by then, they rested players left right and centre and their players treated it as a walk in the park. Lo and behold, by the next season we were back to true form of being utterly sh*te until he got the gun.

Wigley's appointment was just utterkly bizarre; and it wasn't until he took to the press to say "no, really, I'm the full time manager here; I've been given the job" until it actually sank in that it wasn't just some cruel, sick joke.

Edit: Just checked it. Gray took over when Hoddle left, and inherited a team that had just had 7 straight league clean sheets and 5 straight league wins. Gray's first 7 games in charge saw 5 defeats and 2 draws, before those 2 dead rubbers against Man Utd and Arsenal somehow convinced Lord Lowe that it was a good idea to continue to keep Gray in charge and let him spend £4M on Rory f*cking Delap.

Yes, I remember this. That tw*t Lowe didnt even announce it and stand by his side properly.

First I knew that it was permanent was a back page spread in the Echo, of Wigley convincing everyone that he wasn't just a caretaker. I still wasn't sure whether it just some elaborate hoax.

I remember it well,. Wigley interviewed by the media at Staplewood whist sitting in his training gear and asked by the media who was running the first team now and his almost apologetic "i am" reply. Joke.

The failure to appoint Hoddle was a consequence of Glenn Hoddle being a total penis.

Er no......I think some of the fans were mistaken in their protest and had they known what they would get instead would probably have kept their feelings to themselves !

I'm glad of anything that highlights just how inept Steve Wigley is. I've no time for the man at all.

The club was very badly looked after by those at the top. Should have stood up to the vocal few in the Spring of 2004 and stuck to the sensible choice which is Hoddle. Sure it was the plan and I am sure WGS knew this when he left Saints.

I couldn't give a toss about Hoddle. He wasn't even that good a manager - even his academy thing has died on its arse.

Part of being a good manager is accepting your limitations. Wigley just didn't have a clue, never realised that he was extremely limited and wasn't the right man for the job. Should have quit long before Redknapp was even touted as a potential Southampton manager.

I know Dave Jones came via that route. Didnt Sturrock's side knock us out?

hmm..not sure. I know during his pre season..we got hammered 3-1 by argyle in a friendly

you could tell then that we were in trouble

he was a terrible terrible appointment..he had a honeymoon period but was waaaay out of his depth

I'm as sure as I can be that they knocked us out of a cup as a lower division side, like Dave Jones did, and we assumed he must therefore be great. Turned out to want to run the Saints on "the Plymouth model", ie loads of team bonding and cross country runs....ffs.

Still reckon branfoot was the worst myself. I cannot remember more hostility against any manager.

Branfoot kept us in the Premier league and actually whllst not producing football that was pleasing to the eye was the right choice for keeping us up IMO
