That defending was straight out of DiMatteo's league one play book. Anyone who was at the Oldham game when the play off chance was snuffed out and at Walsall last season will know exactly what I mean.

I was at both of those and dont understand. Please explain.

What has Di Matteo got to do with Oldham and Walsall?

His first managerial job was at MK Dons, he's a defensive genius and his "league one play book" against Oldham and Walsall is now being looked at by the top managers in europe.

Widen your vision: how many teams when we played in league 1 with our far superior firepower, put 10 men behind the ball? Oldham at SMS ended our play off hopes playing this way, we threw just about every kitchen sink in Hampshire at them and they kept us out. Walsall last season they were 1-0 up and we must have thrown every kitchen sink in the West Midlands at them to no avail.

When Di Matteo was manager not so long ago at MK Dons he had them playing well he came up against the same backs against the wall defending. How many times in the late stages of European Football have you ever seen defending like tonight, disciplined every man behind the ball most teams in Chelsea's position would have been trying their hardest to push up, and at CL level punished severely.

Hope that helps. :)

Erm, Inter did exactly this against Barca in the CL a couple of seasons ago at the same stage of the competition, and Real Madrid did it a couple of times against them last season - I'm not sure Di Matteo should take any credit for it, or the ever-so-shocking news that teams expecting to get outplayed will instead try and defend and spoil the game. Hell, every crappy 5-a-side team I've ever played for which is capable of basic organisation has done it.

Is anyone else worried that our recent loss of form is coinciding with Barcelona's decline and this is due to our shared style of play being found out?

No, and I'll tell you why...

Barcelona have not been 'found out'. They have played possession football for over a decade and have a trophy cabinet full to the rafters to prove the merit of it.

Even tonight the 'Barcelona way' was good enough to win. They hit the post twice, missed a penalty and missed a hatful of chances to win the game. On another night, penalty goes in, Barcelona would have won 3,4,5-1 and no-one in West London would be out celebrating.

People forget that this is sport. Not every great team can win every game because sometimes you don't get the luck or you spurn the gilt edge chances you create.

These are two facts about football - if you don't have the ball, you cannot score. If you have the ball, the opposition cannot score.

And one other truism that I've learned in 25 years of racing - form is temporary, class is permanent.

Hoddle is such an arse - "Messi did nothing" what, apart from the two defence splitting passes that created a goal and a miss and hitting the woodwork twice... And that was on a bad night.

What a load of unsubstantiated mumbo jumbo. So Di Matteo got Chelsea to play that way based on what he had learned as MK Dons manager. And he learnt this by seeing how well the likes of Walsall and Oldham defended against his magnificent charges?

Barca don't have a plan B,neither did we for many games this season.

Yeh, we've been really crap; Adkins has constantly seriously underestimated the opposition and been found wanting in comparison to more 'experienced' managers!

Whilst the Chelsea defence was undoubtedly praiseworthy, I thought Barca were tactically inept. Against 10 men they played with no width and the tippy-tap passing they specialize in got them nowhere.

Most talented team in Europe? Without question.

Most attractive team? Certainly.

But The Best? Not on tonight's showing.

Hopefully our captain won't act like such a complete and utter bellend like Chelsea's did tonight

He's been getting away with that for years (I remember him having Crouch in a double armlock twice in the box against us years ago: he got the foul in his favour for one and ignored for the other) Silly whatsit forgot the official behind the goal line and paid the price.

Simple - play with the skill and fluency of Barca, and the resolve of Chelsea!!

...... and before anyone asks, yes of course we are better than both of them put together - we are the mighty Saints :-)

He's the most over-rated vile human being to ever wear the England shirt, let alone captaincy TWICE!

Listening to it on the radio last night the tatters said that the sending off helped Chelsea as they just sat deep and refused to chase Barca and the ball. Barca where allowed the ball but couldn't do anything with it.

Saw it on TV

Well they were already pretty much behind the ball before Terry got sent off.Drogba was pretty damn handy at right back though.

Didn't look to have fouled Messi for the penalty either, played the ball and Messi fell over him.

Seeing as they lost both Cahill (to injury early on) and Terry they held up pretty well in defence.

Or Fabrigas for that matter.

Really?? That's the trouble with French commentators, they get so excited about Messi all the time it's as if he's the only player on the pitch. Looked at the incident in the SM,watched the ball and the feet and didn't really notice who'd fallen over, just assumed it was that little Argentinian diver.

With all due respect, it did get them somewhere - check the stats. They missed a penalty and hit the post twice.

By six inches (bar and post) it works.

Whenever a team gets beat (and Barca didn't, they drew - and the second goal was one that hardly mattered as they were down and out alreadyand had 11 men in the opposition box), people are quick to lambast the tactics as though somehow this was some master plan by Di Matteo:

"So, er you see, I'ma tinking' dat if we er letta Messi hava da ball all nighta, chances are he will hitta da post and missa da penalty.

And den we willa play oner brillianta ball from Frankie and datta will give us da win..."

Fair play to Chelsea. They worked bloody hard without the thug and I thought the deserved the luck they got. But luck they did get, didn't they? Pen goes in, bish bosh game over goodnight Chelsea...

Think Chelsea might well win the final actually, depleted or no, wasn't at all impressed by either side in last night's game.

As for the penalty shoot out, you'd have to ask yourself what exactly Ronaldo and Kaka thought they were doing, Neuer prefers to dive to his right so they went to that side anyway and not even just inside the post.Ronaldo's penalty reminded me of Billy's against

Blackpool, woefully weak and inaccurate, a gift for the keeper.
