Le Tiss #7 Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Has Rickie Lambert got a realistic chance of being called up for England. If we look at past call ups. David Nugent was called up after performing well at PNE. Then Jay Bothroyd was called up after an impressive spell with Cardiff. In terms of quality (without any bias) I think Lambert is better. I also think his goals scoring record is better as well. When you look at performing England Striker we have Danny Welbeck, and Wayne Rooney. None of these possess a real aerial threat as a target man. Thoughts?
Nexstar Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 No. Danny Graham and Grant Holt, to name just two, would be ahead of him.
THEVMAN Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 As much as RL is a great player i dont think this will ever happen, their is too many better players ahead of him.
THEVMAN Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Where's Roger when you need him.Dont worry he'll be along soon, bless
trousers Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Hello Mr VMAN Just in case I don't get chance before Saturday... Thanks for all the insights this season. Any chance of revealing who you are if we go up or are you going to be the long term 'Stig' of the forum...? :-)
Turkish Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Good timing. We haven't had a Rickie For England thread for a month or so.
Amazing Hangover Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 As much as RL is a great player i dont think this will ever happen, their is too many better players ahead of him. Apart from Rooney, Who?
the boy from saints Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 What abOut the Olympic team? Him and Adam wOuld be brilliant in that?
THEVMAN Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Apart from Rooney, Who?I really think we`re getting ahead of ourselves here,as i said RL is a great player but the list of others ahead of him would be quite long outside of the " Saints world "
Roger Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 I really think we`re getting ahead of ourselves here,as i said RL is a great player but the list of others ahead of him would be quite long outside of the " Saints world " Okay me Lallana who would those players be then?
Turkish Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 What abOut the Olympic team? Him and Adam wOuld be brilliant in that? Bollix to that we want them both fresh for next season.
Amazing Hangover Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 I really think we`re getting ahead of ourselves here,as i said RL is a great player but the list of others ahead of him would be quite long outside of the " Saints world " Seriously, RL is a really good player- wonderful touch etc. - much more to him than Grant Holt. Ted Sheringham has been mentioned as similar and that's not far off, only RL scores more goals
the boy from saints Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Bollix to that we want them both fresh for next season.\\That's a fair point. I suppose I'd just like the world to see how good they are and get the recognition they deserve. But yeah. If it impacts on Saints then f**k it!
The9 Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 (edited) Not while he is in a Saints shirt. Based on what happened to the last one who got picked I think I'm happy about that. I'm more interested to see if we manage to sneak Lallana into the Olympic squad. Suspect not, as Pearce didn't really pick him for the U-21s when he had the chance, and Bale is likely to be the token Welshman in the 18-man squad and take up the left midfield slot. Sheaf Saint Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Based on what happened to the last one who got picked I think I'm happy about that. James Beattie?
The9 Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 James Beattie? Yeah, in terms of strikers anyway. 5 token England appearances, only one 90 minutes, got himself an attitude, suddenly seemed demotivatd by his failure to make any progress, moved on within a year, and never got to the same heights again.
melmacian_saint Posted 24 April, 2012 Posted 24 April, 2012 Think Lambert still needs to prove if he's up for the big stages, as in fact almost 100% of our squad need to if we get promoted, as I think there are very few who have had a decent run in the Premier in their careers so far (only remember Davis, and it wasn't a trouble-free time at Sunderland). So far he's proven to be up for the Championship, but apart from this being his first season at this level (can't thank him enough for what he's done though), the Premier is a world away from the FL and it's not like he'll be recieving as many balls from Lallana or Chaplow as he recieves now. A striker may be good at finishing but may lack the skill or creativity to create chances for himself, which he will have to do more in the Premier as we won't be dominating play as we've done in the last 2 seasons.

Saint Charlie Posted 19 November, 2012 Posted 19 November, 2012 Lambert is class, but not mobile enough for the top level.
