Probably posted elsewhere But is it likely that sat will be the highest ever attendance at SMS or will there be large gaps in away end due to badly placed Coventry fans

Many will indeed be sat, but some may, of course, be standing ...

Aren't there 6,000 or so this week who are skint, have surprise birthday parties to go to, not bothering because it's on telly, put off by the early kick off, the weather forecast is bad, there is a tube strike, the A27 was shut today, got holidays to pay for, it's bank holiday in 2 weeks time, missus has arranged for themto do something else etc etc?

Unless I'm much mistaken the recession is still on, people are still skint, petrol prices are still high, the game is on telly, there is a still a booking fee, public transport is still crap and people still have birthdays and their birds ordering them about. They are all excuses I've heard as to why people can't make it this season. All of a sudden this doesn't seem to be the case, funny that.

no no, it's still the case that those people can't make it. This is 6,000 new supporters ;).

Are you really struggling to understand why some people, who normally only go to a few games a season, are making a special effort to be at this game? Or is this just one of those "look at me, I'm Turkish and I'm being funny and controversial" jokes?

Quite common that a lot of fans pick and choose games. They are more likely to choose the more important "I was there" games. I have plenty of friends that will do 8-10 games a season. They were not there for Barnsleys visit, but they will be there Saturday. I find it hard to believe you don't see that, and just looking for a reaction.

I can't wait to see more super fans waving their STs at me.

We had 55,000 at Wembley two years go for what in reality was little More than a glorified friendly. We are regularly told on here we need bigger stadium, this is such an amazing time to be a saints fan, what great football we are playing and half of our squad ahould be in the England team. Yet that doesn't seem to be reflected in the attendances does it.

Yes, but they've been replaced by the 6,000 who were doing one of those things last time.

It will be interesting to see what happens to attendances next season, whichever division we're in.

Between 1999-2004/5 season it was rare you saw any empty seats in the prem games at all clubs, wth just the 'minor' games have a few gaps - NOw yu see gaps at all clubs - someties large - combination of a couple of things realy, ticket prices high during a recession and alot of folk strating to be a bit disillusioned with the way the game is so dominated by cash IMHO. I still remember what is probably or highest unofficial SMS gate in that last minute organied friendly against Bayern Munich when they let folk stand on te steps and around the pitch - must have been clser to 33K in all.

What w ehave to realise is that (although some seem to think its 'bad') is that there are many fans who enjoy going with their kids, old man etc andso its not just paying for your own ticket, but 2, 3 or 4 - or who do you leave at home? So its can easily be a £100+ just for tickets for a home game -so I would say a 25-26k average in the second tier is pretty respectable.

...and Wembley in a final is always special now matter what teh comp so folk save and make sacrafices elsewhere.

Yep all those things are true so it's hardly a surprise that people who only go to a few matches a season would pick this one over say posh away ot ipswich at home is it?

It would seem we've got over 30000 that only go to a few games a season. It's very surprising that as this is supposedly such a great time to be a Saints fan and a team full of shouldbe international players more Of these don't bother most of the time.

What is your point? You talk about people making "excuses". I was unaware we were compelled to go to every game and had to bring a note from our parents if we didn't. I don't go to every game. I've been to most home games this season and one away (Palace in the cup). Sometimes I have other things to do. Watching Saints is just one part of my life, albeit a quite important part. That doesn't mean I don't want Saints to succeed and it doesn't mean I don't want to witness their final moment of triumph on Saturday.

This may, in your view, make me less of a fan than you. Somehow, I'll try to live with that.

Maybe but is that any different to every other club in the country? It would be nice to see a packed SMS every game, all those wigs and foam hands would be a glorious sight to behold, but it probably won't happen some games just don't turn people on.

I hope Nicola makes it season ticket holders only next season, this has gone on for long enough. People who attend only when it suits are scum and if they dont like it they can go support Pompey.

But for other clubs in the country this isn't supposed to be the best time in their life to support Saints. For other clubs in the country aren't banging on about needing a bigger stadium when they cant fill the one they've got regularly. Other clubs in the country they aren't claiming to be on an unstoppable march to the champions league with a team of academy graduates. We aren't any other club in the country. As itchen says there are plenty of reasons why people cant make games, i just wonder why they dont apply when there is a chance of glory and will no doubt disapear next season when we are in the premier league playing Man United and City.

Doubt it will be a sell out as Coventry has not sold all their tickets and have returned some. Hoof Ham sold out their entire allocation as we did, as well as corporate seating hence the record attendance against Hoof Ham. My Guess would be around 31,800.

If you do not understand that the things that get in the way of attending football matches are less of an issue for big games you are one of two things. Either on the wind up or a complete idiot, either way no real point in trying to reason

So what defines a "big game"? Is it who the opposition are? Like the clamour for tickets everytime we play Man United for example?

You know that's the truth a big match is defined by the occassion (ie promotion) or the oppostion (ie Man U). Some people are more interested in the oppostion than saints. That's what the "we need a 46,000 seater staduim" crowd are banking on that lots of fans who weren't bothered about watching saints vs burnely will be falling over themselves to get tickets when Chelsea come to town.

Of course they are, up to a point, if you've got the money to spend on one game (and one game only) who would you rather watch saints play Chesterfieid or Man Utd? There are some that won't care but a lot who will. You pays your money you takes your choice unless your well off enough to be able to go to every single game.

There was a survey a couple of years back about people's support for league football teams up and down the country, it included Scotland too. Pretty certain we were in the Championship at the time and we came out as the 17th. Add this finding to the unofficial 55,000 Saints fans who rocked up to the JPT final and those who missed out, the fact that there will be times when the 32k+ seats at Saint Mary's will not be enough for key games is no surprise. Just amazing that everytime we get big gates and surge for ticket demand a full on debate takes place on here.

I'm not going, Coventry is not really a glamour game, with them being relegated n'all and no decent players in their team.

Save my money for a top team.

Doesn't this highlight how disapointing attendances have been this season though? 17th best supported club in Britain yet only a 2/3's full ground most of this season when it's the greatest time in most of our lives to be a fan.

I'm sure we have loads of fans that only go to 5/10 games a season. Why are you criticising them that they want to be there for this massive game? At the end of the day if money is tight and have other things to pay for in life then there is only so many games you can go to...and this will be chosen due to the size of the game. This is huge. Maybe Turkish, you are just loaded or incredibly lucky that you can go to every game throughout the season...or maybe you're just a keyboard warrior that doesn't actually go to games.

Still dont understand why we need such a large segregation area in the Northam especially for a game like this. They could of reduced the netting size as stewards and coppers stand there anyway which would release a fair few extra seats.

In league one our average was about 21,000, that is what i would say is our proper fan base that are loyal, loaded or incredilby lucky as you put it. Therefore if the exra 34,000 that went to Wembley all went to an average of 5 games each our attendance should still be around the 30k mark on average. Considering this is such a great time to be a Saints fan i cant for the life of me think why we cant get to this figure and above every week.

Posted

Tbh if your skint (AKA a large percentage of football fans at the moment) and could only afford to go to one game all season then you will go to one of the bigger games (Wham at home for example).

I'm lucky enough to have a season ticket anyway so who cares.

For most games this season we could have had a segregation area of 5,000 seats, it wouldn't have made any difference.

I go to whatever games I can, and I'm sure there are plenty of others that do the same that cannot go every week. Although I agree that I think our attendances should be better than they have been this season, there are plenty of fans who don't live in Southampton, so it becomes horribly expensive and just not viable for plenty of fans.

Yes but by reducing that segregation releasing approx 100 or so extra tickets would kerb any need for stadium expansion surerly

That's patently nonsense. I reckon your numbers are probably about right in terms of hard core fans and floating fans, however the floating 34,000 will not distribute their attendences evenly across each game of the season. That's why when only 4K of them decide to come and see Barnsley we end up with a relatively low crowd, but when more than 12K of them want to come we have threads on here and conversations in pubs about people looking for tickets when games are 'sold out'.

It's obvious to everyone else on this thread but you are just on a wind up.
