So, now Chappers is out, who is going to fill the right midfield slot ?

Guly, Punch or Steve De Ridder ?

I'd like to see punch given a start, but can't see it and the boss will play safe with Guly and SDR coming off the bench.

Thoughts ?

Why? He's done nothing since he's been back. SDR has done nothing for 6 months and his few decent moments have come from the bench, surely that should tell you something. The only choice is Guly and if he isn't playing brilliant after 3 minutes the usual morons will be on his back.

i'd start with Guly for the added goal threat that he provides, but do worry about the lack of players we have in midfield who can actually RUN WITH THE BALL. would be good to have Richardson back at right back to bomb on up the wing and provide some crosses to the back post for Lambert to put away.

Agree, Guly works best when creating the space for Richardson to run into. Otherwise we have no outlet on the right wing.

Look you've got to get this straight. Our midfield players can all run with the ball,Morgan,Cork,Hammond,Lallana,Guly,Chaplow, all of them. Our management don't want them to run with the ball unless they're in certain positions. We seem to have this Barcelona fixation of pass and move, not running the ball.Let Chelsea kick their ass tonight, perhaps our system will change. It's the manager that makes the playing system not the players, they just do as they're asked.

Guly shouldnt even be in the squad - if he starts i will be worried!

I don't know about him not being in the squad but certainly I wouldn't be best pleased if he was a starter on Saturday. That is until he scores a hat-trick and comes over to me, sat just behind the goal, and says 'Are you Crazy Diamond? You're a ****'.

Not much chance that Puncheon will come in from the cold straight into the first-team for this sort of game. Outside chance of being on the bench, I guess, but I'd fully expect Guly to start (with Richardson coming back in at right-back, hopefully), with de Ridder as an option from the bench in the second half.

I would play an injured Chaplow over Guly!

This.

The only other possibility I can see is NA going for a diamond of: Morgan holding, Hammond and Cork in the middle, with with Lallana attacking/free roaming. This would also really call for a return of Frazer to RB.

However, I feel a midfield of: Lallana-Morgan-Cork-Guly is the most likely.

Puncheon and SDR are proper wingers and as such are totally wasted the way Nigel likes to play with the diamond and narrow midfield. As such it should be Guly all the way...... Unless Nigel decided to play 4-4-2 with two pacey wingers in which case Punch and SDR might play....but I'm pretty sure that won't happen

Punch tweeting something very positive earlier. Along the lines of all together chasing the goal. Wouldnt be suprised to see him in the squad

Jason Puncheon ‏ @jasonpunch

On another note I'm perfectly fine an not injured..we have one aim together as a unit the premier league

I'd play Punch, he has a lot still to give and would want to prove his worth in finding a new club or having a premier league starting place, if Guly starts i'm going to say we'll lose, he's been crap since November and he is tens times as bad when we're on TV.

What an utterly stupid post.

Puncheon's most successful returns in the last 2 years (his time at Millwall and for Saints against Blackpool in the FA Cup) were all in a narrow left or right midfield role.

I genuinely think Puncheon's undergoing the Billy Sharp treatment - he came back from loans not "Saints fit" and he's being trained to optimum fitness to be unleashed on the Prem next season. I can't see him playing, but you never know. At home against a relegated team I think I'd go with Guly and De Ridder in reserve - not too worried if it's the overlapping Richardson or "holds and passes to feet" Butterfield in behind, though the former would probably offer more attacking threat and put Guly in first touch territory a lot further up the pitch.

De Ridder on the bench to do his usual late on impact thing.

Sheesh. The only criticism I have of Guly in the last 2 months is that he seems to take a long time to close down opposing full backs when they have the ball 80 yards from our goal, which is basically not his job half the time anyway.

I too would start Guly. Have De Ridder on the bench, but I suspect Adkins will go for the Cork/Morgan/Deano combination from earlier in the season.

No way will he if Guly is fit. Adkins has shown faith in Guly all season. Why would he drop him to put out a team which has been proven to not work?

Which was an unmitigated disaster, doubled our goals against and produced two goals from play in a very poor run of results. If he does that it would hand the initative to WHU on a plate.
