I was 18 at the time and i was one of the 16.000 at this game but i very nearly didn't go. it was a last minute decision as my mate who i used to go with fell ill on the saturday morning of the game. Anyhow, i decided to go on my own and i am glad i did! The game was 0-0 untill Dave Armstrong headed us in front on the half hour, we looked as if we could score at will from then on and it could've been 14-2!!! Funnily enough Coventry's goals were the best goals, both 25 yarders as i recall. Danny wallace scored 3. Steve Moran scored 3 with Frank Worthington and Spud Armstrong scoring the others. The following home game saw Saints beat Spurs 5-0!!!

Don't want to put a dampener on this, but it clearly says this was on 27th, not 28th.

Yeah i've just noticed it, bo*locks. When i googled Southampton 8 Coventry 2 it definitely came up with the 28th though FFS.

Wiki says its the 28th as well.

This was my first ever game at the Dell. It has all been downhill since then!

Was my first game too, can't say i really remember a massive amount about the details of the game but it got me hooked and i've been going ever since!

That was a great game.

Remember the Cov GK Perry Suckling having a complete mare.

Most of the carnage happened in the 2nd half when we were on fire.

I think it was 2-1 at HT?

Lets do it again on Sat.

My own recollection has it as 4-1 at half time. If so, it was a classic game of two halves - 4-1 to us in each half!

Just looked it up in my copy of 'In That Number' and apparently the scorers were:

Dave Armstrong (28)

Danny Wallace (36,64,85)

Stevie Moran (57,76,82)

Frankie Worthington (69)

So looks like we scored 2 goals at HT and 6 goals in the 2nd half.

Apparently it was Danny Wallace's only Saints hat-trick which surprises me.

Great team and a classic game, one of my early ones.

Yep I was there that day, only 2 years previous we had shared 10 goals in a 5-5 thriller on the night HMS Sheffield was hit during the Falklands War.

As a member of the IOW Saints Supporters club I met Steve Moran after the 8-2 game as it was our end of season dinner, Moran along with Lawrie Mac and a couple of other first teasers were there. Great night and great memories.

That team came so close to the double that season - yes younger readers Saints and a League and Cup double. How we never beat Everton in that Cup semi final I will never know. A bobble and Adrian Heath combined to give me my worst ever feeling after a Saints game.

Coming second in the league was some sort of consolation but again we came so close. A stupid 0-1 home defeat to Notts County who were relegated that year was so costly as we were only 3 points behind Liverpool at the end of that season. A scrappy 1-0 defeat at Everton on Grand National morning when we were too intent on saving players for the Cup semi also cost us.

That season was full of great memories - despite the disappointment of the Cup semi. For some reason I remember the Cup run better than the League - and not just for Steve Moran at Nottarf. Blackburn away in the 5th round on a Friday night was a highlight.

8-2 on saturday would be great. Hopefully it will lead to younger generations of Saints fans getting as much satisfaction from their team as I did in 1984.
