If we finish level on points with West Ham ....

... who goes up? Obviously if West ham don't win their last 2 games, or we get the win against Coventry, this is moot. But, if the Hammers get the 2 wins, and we draw, there is a possibility of both teams having equal points, equal goal difference, and equal goals scored. For example if West Ham win their 2 matches by a 4-0 aggregate margin, and we draw 0-0.

According to

http://www.sportinglife.com/football/cc_championship/table/

  • If two or more teams finish level on points the team with the better goal difference will finish higher.
  • If two or more teams have the same points and the same goal difference, the team which has scored the higher number of goals will finish higher.
  • If two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored at the end of the season and the championship, a promotion place, play-off place or relegation place is at stake they will then play off to decide who finishes higher.

The last line is bollocks. From the official rules (http://www.football-league.co.uk/regulations/20110629/section-3-the-league_2293633_2125717):

9.2 If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements approved by the Board on a neutral ground.

Which means that the Saints will go up (albeit in extraordinary squeaky bum fashion).

So if West ham "only" beat Leicester 1-0, they would need at least a 4-0 (or 5-2) win against Hull to overtake us (unless we lose to Coventry, which I don't even want to think about).

Fortunately Poyet isn't the manager of Leicester or Hull. :D

So to summarise if we don't lose to Coventry, West Ham must score at least 5 goals in their next 2 games to stand a chance of promotion.

That was my understanding Deano. A five goal swing. Actually I think it may be the case that if they swing it by 5 or more, then a draw of any score will see us in the PO's.

All academic hopefully as I am going, as I always do, in the expectation of seeing a Saints win.

Correct. :D

Makes me feel a bit better than I did yesterday. Of course, if Leicester do a Brighton tomorrow, the roller coaster will dip down again.

According to the BBC website:

If Southampton draw on the final day and West Ham win but score four more goals than the Saints, their records would be identical. This would bring about a special play-off, in which the winner would secure promotion while the loser would enter the regular play-offs.

That's wrong then? Right? It won't come to that, but I'm intrigued.
