Marsdinho Posted 22 April, 2012 Share Posted 22 April, 2012 Morning, Bit of a weird one, I'm moving house around the end of June and need to find somewhere where I can keep my fish for a few days whist the move goes ahead; a sort of kennels, but for fish. Does anyone here know of any establishments in the Southampton area that offer this kind of service, or has anyone been in this kind of situation and has found an alternative arrangement. Cheers. sussexsaint Posted 22 April, 2012 Share Posted 22 April, 2012 I'm too far away in Sussex but is ask at the local sho you use. Can't be a unique problem
Marsdinho Posted 22 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 22 April, 2012 Sorry, I should have said. I have asked a few places near me, but none of them offer this kind of service. I remember being in a shop once and saw a sign oa tank that read "these fish arent for sale, they are on holiday" but I can't for the life of me remember where that was. Like you say though, this can't be a unique situation.
Petersfield Saint Posted 22 April, 2012 Share Posted 22 April, 2012 I'd ring around a few branches of Maidenhead Aquatics in the area (Fairoak, Fareham, Havant all spring to mind) - Havant is my local branch and they've definitely taken in fish temporarily in the past. sussexsaint Posted 22 April, 2012 Share Posted 22 April, 2012 I've been keeping a tank for 10 months now and love the hobby. What do you have in your tank? Are there no mates that can keep it for you for a couple of days?
ribbo Posted 22 April, 2012 Share Posted 22 April, 2012 theres a pretty good fish shop in Boyatt Wood near the Arrow that might do it.
FloridaMarlin Posted 22 April, 2012 Share Posted 22 April, 2012 If you've got any Zebra fish my son will help you out and give them a good home. He's doing a Phd at Oxford in Genetics and his field of research is congenital heart disease using Zebra fish. Zebra fishes' heart muscles regenerate after suffering heart disease and they're trying to isolate the genetic code in Zebra fish that enables them to do that and transplant it into humans. Very worthwhile research, but you might not get your Zebra fish back intact.

I somehow doubt thats the type of service Marsdinho is looking for, but nice one On the same lines, anyone else ever read Chandler's "Killer in the rain"? Terrific book, there was a storyline about a crook that hid his ill-gotten gains (valuable pearls) in his tropical fish, and managed to keep them alive and swimming. Until the private detective showed up, naturally.
Marsdinho Posted 22 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 22 April, 2012 I've been keeping a tank for 10 months now and love the hobby. What do you have in your tank? Are there no mates that can keep it for you for a couple of days? Mostly catfish, and some African butterfly fish. It's a large tank (180ltr) and takes time to set up etc, would be better if they went somewhere that already had tanks available to be honest. Jillyanne Posted 22 April, 2012 Share Posted 22 April, 2012 Had the exact same issue a few years back and took all mine (including a 2 inch Rainbow Crab and Shrimps) to Nightingale Pets in Nightingalr Avenue, Eastleigh. They were fantastic, cleared out 3 tanks to accommodate my lot, fed them all for a tenner. Alternatively I will happily look after them for you. Saint in Paradise Posted 23 April, 2012 Share Posted 23 April, 2012 Don't let DSM take them to look after as he might think you gave him them for free and he might then sell them.

Marsdinho Posted 23 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 23 April, 2012 Cheers for the replies, and thanks for the offer Jilly! But I rang maidenhead aqautics in fairoak and they will take them. God knows why I didn't think of them in the first place! For anyone that's interested, they can offer a small tank for £15 pw, and a large tank for £30 pw. They need a weeks notice to get their tanks ready.

sussexsaint Posted 24 April, 2012 Share Posted 24 April, 2012 Daft question but what are you going to do about the water in your new location - are you taking any of the water with you or are you going to let it cycle for a few days before you reintroduce your fish? I suppose as long as you use your old filter media it would cycle pretty quickly but its still a thought
