Coventry build up thread

Recommended Posts

Perhaps, finally. It will be Guly time.

Nige will have the lads ready to play. They can really now win something big in front of their home fans. The mental approach and team spirit has been one of the key factors in our last season and 3/4.

The ONLY thing that can really screw us up will be the fans. Saturday is not about nerves from any of us, it is about that one word.

BELIEVE

I promise to have the faith, show no nerves, and sing my heart out, getting behind the team. Who's with me? No anxiety in the stands, and hopefully none on the pitch!

If Saints cannot beat an already relegated Coventry side on the final day of a season to win promotion to the Premierleague then I'm sorry but we don't deserve it.

Every single player will be right up for this game in front of a packed stadium. Hopefully Cov will be focused on their summer holidays not wanting to go away to wherever with a broken leg. A few youngsters for them will be ideal.

We will win and we will be promoted come Saturday evening. You lot are just miserable

Several good posts on this page of this thread, most noticeably by Franks Cousin and if everyone is behind the team on Saturday as the majority on here suggest then St Mary's will be immense on Saturday, the stadium absolutely rocking and behind the team with a roar of every kick to push us for that final win that takes us up!

If Saints are above West Ham at 2:30pm on Saturday then they deserve to be there no matter what happens vs Coventry. I see where you are coming from and of course we should beat an already relegated team, but it is a 46 games season and if Saints are 2nd after 46 games then they deserve it.

Wish I could be as optimistic/positive as everyone else on here.

These same people went upto Middlesbrough saying 'promotion party 2011/12' and things like that before a ball was even kicked at the Riverside and surprise surprise we lost.

Well all the happy-clappy fans that attend the Coventry match on Saturday will be saying the same thing, not just hoping but fully expecting us to beat Coventry 4/5-0.

It won't happen, mark my words. We will go 1-nil down against Coventry, all the fans will get on the players' backs. We'll lose our bottle and then they'll win 3-1.

The team has no bottle and we obviously don't perform under pressure. Everytime we have had the chance to get a lead on the opposition/make things easy for ourselves we've fluffed it, as the team just have no backbone.

I'm hoping and praying that I'm wrong, but I can just see West Ham celebrating on Saturday evening, and all Saints fans being devastated that we couldn't even draw/win against an already relegated Coventry side.

Plus with the match on TV, we might aswell hand West Ham the 2nd promotion spot, congratulations West Ham you will have deserved it.

My prediction?

Wham win 10-0 tonight and are 15-0 up on Sat.

Saints struggle to beat a dogged Cov rearguard action and as we go into the 93rd minute the score is still 0-0.

Lambert gets sent off for dissent and heads drop, playoffs here we come........then suddenly Guly produces a sublime piece of fleet footed magic to burst through before getting tripped by a dirty Cov defender.

Billy Sharp smashes it home and the crowd invade the pitch after one of the tensest games in SFC history.

Guly is given the freedom of the city.

Easy this prediction lark innit.

;)

If you think the FL are going to appoint a ref that is going to give us a penalty you are having a laugh. Why do you think Hines wasn't sent off? West Ham have friends in high places, and I have every expectation that the ref on Saturday will turn out to be the biggest cock since Roger Milford.

What if we draw with Coventry and West Ham are level with Hull and denied a goal that crosses the line but the linesman doesn't see?

Very easy to say promoted sides deserve it but the world isn't that black and white. Overall I'd say saints and reading deserve it because they've been more positive, more united and not relied on mercenaries like Nolan. But West Ham have looked a lot better since Big Sam actually played some strikers.

Whoever finishes 3rd deserves to go up far more than the club that finishes 6th, but it won't make it more likely. Football isn't always fair.

I know I'm picking holes but if West ham are level and we draw a ball crossing the line for West Ham makes no difference to the table. We'd still be above them on GD. :)

This is how I think saints will line up and I agree apart from Guly starting although we don't have many options on right midfield. SDR hasn't made impact when starting games so unlikely he will on last game plus we have no other impact players on bench if he isn't on there.

You will give us a right hiding so don't lose any sleep over us. We only have one away win all season and that is not about to change on Saturday.

As for Nimely he is out injured along with just about everyone else, the bench will be made up of kids without a first team game between them.

So thats Nimley out as well.

i wouldnt trust guly to carry the water bottles to be honest. decent player but his head isnt right at the moment and for me is sulking and isnt putting the effort required in.

I was a Guly fan up to the Portsmouth game, he has the body language of being too laid back and uncaring.

If he does that on Saturday in a 100% wound up fanbase he will get slaughtered by some of our less

understanding lot.

De Ridder show flashes of ability but thats just all it is and very little end product - the one thing he does though is give us an outlet and can keep the ball.

Gives the full back a chance to overlap, thats why it has to be Richardson.

A few weeks ago I did the predictor thingy on the BBC.

Had Saints to lose at Boro and beat Coventry to go up, seemed realistic at the time.

Let's not be too down regarding the Boro result, maybe our expectations were lifted too much for that game after seeing the team give a good showing against Reading and then comfortably beating Peterboro.

Sun Tzu, bouncebackability, positive thinking, Trust in NA etc.

We're in the best place on Saturday, much better than being at Palace, Watford or Upton Park and with the best chance of winning.

Swap Hammond for Cork and that's the team I'd go for. No need for 3 defenders on the bench this week either!!

What a pleb.

If myself, or anyone of the 3,000 Saints who travelled 612 miles for an evening game that was on the telly, even tries to say they didn't make the trip for a promotion party, they are a bare faced liar. Of course we did! We were all hoping and praying that dogged journey would be one to remember. We did all bill it as a promotion party, in hope to drum up demand, build up an atmosphere and get the away end rocking! Unfortunately, we come up against a very good Middlesbrough who decided they were going to up their game.

Your comment about no backbone is laughable. We have been top 2 all year and have shown our most resilience when under the cosh. You really need to take a long hard look at yourself. Typical of all the fair weather Saints "fans" comments I'm seeing over Facebook about "Tupical Saints, going to f*ck it up." what an utter embarrassment. I f*cking hope you get nowhere near a ticket for the game.

0-0 for us means they must win by 3. Any score draw for us and they must win by 4.

All irrelevant of course as we'll be winning comfortably.

With all respect not quite right. If we get a score draw they can still go up if they win by 4 or more OR win by 3 whilst scoring 3 more than us on the day.

Eg our score 1 1, theirs 4 1 they go up.

2 2 and 4 1 we go up.

But as you said, irrelevant if we win.

The team will be up for it.NA will have prepared them well , the ground will be rocking the odds will be hugely in our favour.

We can kill West Ham by taking control of the game. A positive attitude by all is what is required.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion... but before you go hide in a cupboard with your favourite soft toy, stick underpants on head and two pencils up your nose as say 'wibble' .... maybe you should ask yourself if this team has no bottle why are we currently second 2 points clear?

This is football FFS, ther have been plenty of times we have played poorly and won, plently of times we have dominated and draw or even lost, and yes teh odd occasion where we have played poorly and lost and deservedly so. I know expectations have been raised by the cracking start and a top two position all season, but it obvious to anyone that there are the odd frality in quality - given we are a Championship side and not champions league, does that really surprize anyone?

We are where we are BECAUSE this side HAS Bottle, Heart and a spirit of unity that has been developed over the last 3 years, not becaus eof lack of it. Luck plays a part and despite Cov being down, we will like all teams need our fair share, especially with nerves and pressure, but we also know that there is real quality in teh side and that if that shines we would win 99/100.

I cant predict what will happen, whether we get the luck this side has made for itself and deserves, but I do know they will give it everything.

Get behind the side and worry about all the issues you feel the side has in summer - and I suspect that it will be ficused on how to avoid a drubbing at Citeh in the opening game of next season.

Cov fan on their injuries:

Our injury situation?

Err mmm. Deegan- injured, Clingan - injured, Hermann - injured, Christie- injured, Wood- injured, Cameron - injured, Bell - injured, Nimely -injured, Keogh - suspended.

Saturday we are going to have to throw a young academy kid into the centre of defense and that will then be the only fit defenders we have out their on the pitch. Keogh, our player of the season and probably only reasonably consistent player is going to be very sorely missed!

I'm sure we will try and give it a go but you really should have this one in the bag and win by a good 2 or 3 goals clear.

At last! We have the self indulgent luxury of four and a half days of doing nothing but worry endlessly about ourselves. Are we good enough? Will we bottle it at the last? Coventry will roll over won't they because they are already relegated and are clearly useless AND they have five or six injuries and a suspension to deal with. Oh no they won't! They'll suddenly transform themselves in to a slick devil-take-the-hindmost footballing machine as they have nothing to play for and will attack with abandon, exposing our frail and nervous players for the wusses they really are. But no, wait! If we play like we did against Pompey/Palace/Peterborough/Reading/Derby etc we will get shed loads of goals. Yes, but if we steam forward we'll be exposed at the back and Fonte/Fox will mess up and we'll go 1-0 with only added on time to get two goals for the win and WHU will likely be 3-0 up against a disinterested Hulll

. . .

I'm exhausted by the stress . . . and it's only a quarter past eight Tuesday morning.

I have heard the term chokers banded about. Seems there are plenty of them on here.

Luckily, none in our first eleven come Saturday.

Two years, two promotions - that's all they'll be thinking.

Win the game. Control the controllables.

Could be 1-0 - we'll still clinch it. It won't.

The team have never been up for a game like this one.

I'll bet the same patsies who are wetting themselves today were doing the same down Wembley way before we demolihsed Carlisle....

A negative outlook on the situation doesn't equal a 'plastic' fan. Just think we've had chance after chance V Pompey, V Reading, V Blackpool, V Bristol City twice to make it easy on ourselves and walk this league, and every time we haven't shown the guile required to compete under pressure.

I've got a ticket for Saturday, and will be travelling straight down from Heathrow after my flight back from Vegas :)

I can see the midfield being Lallana-Hammond-Cork-Morgan. Adkins doesn't seem to trust his proper wide right players (SDR and Punch), and I suspect he may have finally lost faith with Guly. I think we'll be very narrow in the midfield, and SRL will spend most of the match lurking in that quasi-inside-left-wing position he often drifts to. If im right, It's absolutely imperative that Richardson plays to provide at least a modicum of width. A nervous 1-0 for 80 odd minutes with a joyless second half, and then a late late goal out of the blue to make it either the best or worst day imaginable...
