SW11_Saint Posted 24 April, 2012 Share Posted 24 April, 2012 Amazing match tonight at the Nou Camp. I understand that there is no prize for Coventry on Saturday, but it does prove again that ANYTHING can happen in football. Hope our players watched that and appreciated that fact. Nigel won't let them underestimate the opposition, but this is a nice timely reminder... PS Well done Chelsea!

I'd suggest that there's more chance of Hull putting in a solid defensive display than Coventry but it's a reminder how a "certainty" never really is. dubai_phil Posted 24 April, 2012 Share Posted 24 April, 2012 Wonder what songs our Coventry friends would like us to sing about SISU. Patrick Bateman Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 I really do feel sorry for Coventry's fans - I've always liked the club and even the city having spent some time there. I think our two clubs were always very similar throughout the 90s especially in terms of size and battling against relegation. I also feel very sorry that they got lumbered with the SISU mess but thankful we didn't! Having said that, I would love another 8-2, easy day at the office, no nerves, thank you very much. Shroppie Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 After a day of calming down on the golf course and escaping from this forum, where some of the posts seem to be getting quite hysterical in their panic over what may or may not happen on Saturday, I’ve reflected on the task and: We have the team to get the job finished with a win. They have the individual and collective skills to beat a Coventry team who’ve lost to us twice this season already We have the best manager in the Championship to prepare the team psychologically for the game. He will not allow over-confidence nor negativity. We must have (and will have) a fantastic atmosphere in SMS helping them over the line. That support must stay positive even if things don’t go right from the start and patience is needed. To those who are getting tense and scared, that’s natural given the prize at stake, but the last thing needed is any collective anxiety being transmitted to the team, and I would be surprised if there aren’t quite a few who look on here, so let’s keep reminding them of our confidence in them. It’s been an amazing season, and I am confident that with the team, fans and manager working together on Saturday, it will have a happy ending. supersonic Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 The key to this match will be if we can do what we did at the beginning of the season rather than what we've been doing recently. derry Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 There are a lot of flaky comments on here about Saturday. It appears to me that not many if any are ex footballers with the exposure to critical games at any level. I was lucky that the players/teams I was involved in had an inner steel core that came out on the critical occasions. Never mind the variables, do we have the inner steel core? Yes we do and it will take us through on Saturday. Will it be a walkover? No bloody way, we will have to battle to impose our quality and we will. It is the way that good teams impose themselves, fight for the right to play. I'm not sure we need the strollers, ie. Schneiderlin and Guly on Saturday. I'd stick with the midfield with DeRidder's pace down the right. Richardson or Butterfield, Richardson was poor after his injury and Butterfield is steady. If DeRidder play Butterfield, If Guly maybe Richardson. One thing I do know we don't need to give silly free kicks away in range as McSheffrey is a bloody good free kick taker. Schneiderlin is hardly a "stroller". I would say he is the best of our midfielders defensively, particularly with the positions he takes up. Also feel that he is the best at keeping the ball, and that will be crucial to dominating the game. "Fighting for the right to play" is all very well, but if we pass the ball well and play our game we will win.

Ex-footballer in "thinking that means he knows what he is talking about" shocker. Schneiderlin a stroller, you must be bloody joking. I guess you weren't watching when he got injured the other week. One of the most fired-up 5 minute cameos I have ever seen. Sad that he was injured because he is so important to us, but he would probably have been sent off before half time if he had not. I know its the done thing to criticise Guly, but anyone who actually knows about football would also see the amount of running and effort he actually puts in, again no stroller for those with real insight into how the game is played. The only problem with Guly is that he is out of form, lacking in confidence (maybe because ****s keep having a go at him) that is why I wouldn't play him, certainly not because he is a stroller. The only stroller there should be is the one that you should be pushed around in by your Mum.
Wiggles31 Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 Schneiderlin will be a vital player in this game. He is capable of setting the tempo of the gaming with his passing. Hammond tends to slow the whole tempo down with his crab like play. We need a big performance from Guly this game. There is no chance Adkins will start with De Ridder. I think De Ridder has only started on two occasions this season, Nige will play it safe and use as an impact sub. Imagine a last minute Guly winner. Just imagine! Or 93rd minute penalty knowing Wham are up 4 - 0.
Raging Bull Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 Is this the MS that loves to put his foot on the ball and pass in a controlled manor better than anyone else in our squad. Blandford saint Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 I would definitely play Morgan if he's fully fit. I think our form has suffered slightly because he's been out of the side. Lighthouse Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 They have a point though, Coventry very much are the underdogs. Chelsea had a massive task to go to the Nou Camp and get any kind of result. Coventry at home is about the best fixture we could possibly hope for. For us it's all about not f**king it up. Any comparisons with Saints and Chelsea last night are stretched and pretty much pointless.

Window Cleaner Posted 25 April, 2012 Share Posted 25 April, 2012 But teams did use exactly the same tactics against Barca in the last few years. No team stays best in the world for too long, something has to change. Their style destroyed most in front of them and they consistently won when they had too. Far more significant than their style or opposition working out how to play against them, has been the lack of selection consistency. They've ended up with midfielders in defence half the season, Pique out of form, Abidal out for a long time, David Villa injured most the season, Fabregas not finding an obvious position, Pedro struggling for form and trying to make do with youngster like Cuenca and Tello who've been erratic at best. Also, for all Chelsea's work, they'd have lost badly if Messi had scored his penalty, or not hit the post. Lots of luck involved. I just can't see Saints having less than 5 or 6 fantastic chances to score against Coventry. There'll be no point blaming luck or great saves etc. I'd dispute your last statement, Cech made him miss the penalty and Cech turned the ball on to the post if it's the same occasion that we're speaking of.For the penalty:Messi was going to the keeper's left because Cech had feinted to his right,Messi then saw Cech going to his left and tried to go high at the last instant,a recipe for failure.
