Different versions of OWTSGMI

The slightly quicker, shouty version of OWTS, with the repeat after 'OWTS' and 'GMI', that went on for about 15 minutes sounded awesome last night. Deafening, lairy, and everyone in time.

Given that large numbers of our fans don't seem to be able to get their heads around the version with two full slow verses, and it can get a bit mangled with some people speeding up at the end of the first verse and some people not, should we just agree that its one slow verse, then into the shouty bit, and then keep that going for ages?

We need consistency here people

2 slow versus. I cannot believe that STILL the same people try and speed it up after 1. By singing the second verse slower, more and more fans join in, so it gets louder.

Stupidity is a terrible thing, a lot of fans suffer terribly from it.

Incidentally, has anyone made a collection of versions of OWTSGMI by different musicians on cd?

My favourite is by Fats Domino, though it is not particularly slow to start with.

The tune and words originated of course as a gospel or spiritual hymn, beginning as a slow march dirge returning from funerals ( our last few years!) before livening up and going upbeat hot 'dixieland'.

So beginning slow for at least two verses before livening up would now be even more appropriate!

When we do start singing it quickly it dies after a matter of seconds too because people clap too fast and most can't keep up with it. It's our song and we've ruined it. I insist on carrying on singing it slow the 2nd time even when everyone else is singing it quickly.

We don't carry any songs on for long enough. the "Sha la la" song gets two verses before people shut up. Our support would be much better if we would carry on with songs. A few of us were trying to keep OWTS going for about 20 minutes straight in the second half.

This. The incidents such as the "oh Christian Dailly..you saved my life........you can sh%g my wife.." song being sung for 20 mins at Sheff Utd away a few years back stand out only because they are so rare, sadly

The slow version has been tried for a while now and it doesn't really work, loads don't get it and clap at random points and Spurs version is a lot better. I agree, the 10/15mins rendition, going non-stop is class, keep that going.

The 100 mph clapping is doing my head in, had red army going well for a good 5 minutes then someone decides to start clapping along and it just dies out, we dont need to clap to every song, as for OWTS would be good if we could keep the slow version going on and on but don't think there's any chance of that happening, 2 verses than speed it up for me

How's about we just sing it normally like we used to? Not too fast. Not too slow. Easy.

That's too simple. Every song has to be rewritten, discussed and rearranged on the internet before being used. I think George Martin & Macartney spent less time discussing the arrangement of Penny Lane , then we've spent on OWTS

Whatever happened to red and white army that we used to keep going for ages... I can recall singing it non-stop for 20, 30 minutes in the past especially during relegation threatened seasons in the 90s...

I used to love the way it would tail off as people wanted a break but would then flare back up as people realised we weren't letting up... we need this on Saturday. I'll do my bit :)

And yet we still can't even agree on here what sounds best, let alone get everyone singing it the same

I remember one specific game where it went on for ages.

Sheff Wed away.

It was the game that Russian Saint came over for.

It had two section of our away-support chanting it to/at each other trying to be louder than the other.... went on for yonks.

...and there were no happy clappers there to speed-it-up-to-100mph-and-then-a-fade-out.

Still remember it now.... a great effort!!
