Standing...

It was nowhere near as crammed in as I remember the old Dell terraces, plenty of elbow room. I suspect Elf and Safety dictates reduced capacities than 30 years ago...

Plus back then they used to fiddle the books.

Well there always has to be someone to complain on such a great night so I guess it may as well be me. For the only time this season there was a terrace so why was everybody in the seats standing? If you wanted to stand then why didn't you buy a terrace ticket? Then those who either didn't want to stand or physically couldn't stand for the whole game would still have been able to see. It certainly didn't ruin my night, but the elderly couple nearby didn't see a great deal.

I'll second that! I decided not to go for the terrace as I remembered how difficult I used to find it to see when I stood on the Milton Road end (being only 5'4"). I assumed that if you paid an extra £5 for a seat is was because you wanted to sit down but it appears not. So I spent the entire match last night standing on tip toe and peering through gaps. At half time everyone sat down and I had an excellent view of the pitch.

I looked over and thought that was stupid, one of the main advantages of having separate terracing and seats is it allows those that want to sit to sit and those that want to stand, to stand. Absolutely stupid anyone standing in the seated area last night.

Pipe down, Grandad.

Looked quality that everyone in the seats stood was stood as well. Made me proud.

We are Southampton, we'll stand where we want.

I must be getting old, but I didn't think standing was all that. My nipper got pushed around a bit after the first 2 goals went in, so we moved to the side and the view was pretty poor. It was ok for a one off, but prefer the new grounds to these old ones.

I did find it a bit strange that people would want to stand, and then buy seats when there is terracing available.Had I sat down on the terraces I'm sure people would have thought I was some sort of idiot. Hopefully everybody who wanted to sit, was at the front and could see. Personally when there is a standing area, I think pretty selfish to buy a seat and then stand in front of someone who wants to sit down. I would have thought the best solution was those who wanted to stand go onto the terraces and those who wanted to sit buy seats, but perhaps I'm missing something here.

It was a bit stupid though. Guess a lot of them were those that bought tickets when the ticket office were saying the terrace was "sold out", therefore they didn't "choose" seats as such.

Good point. There would have plenty of people who didn't want to stand and thought they'd have a nice time in the seats but had their enjoyment spoiled by the ignorance of others. It seems odd that the stewards didn't make more of an effort to keep people seated over there.

The whole of the seated area stood for all of the match too

Had a seat in the very lower section and asked if I could stand at the very back of the upper tier after KO (thought there'd be a full house) only to be told "You wont find anybody standing here, ground rules and Health & Safety" I replied " There's always standing with away fans" He replied " Notts Forest fans tried standing and we got them to sit down"

After the game started and with all Saints standing I didn't have the heart to go and spoil his evening.

I enjoyed rolling back the years on the terrace but do remember why we changed to all seater. Whenever there was a corner at our end you couldnt really see what was going on and for our third goal I saw the ball run to BS but didnt see it actually go in the net. Also, after our first goal some bloke got really upset that he had been barged over and started punching this other bloke.

Based on the club's progress so far under NC, perhaps in a few seasons time we may have the opportunity to sample the standing terrace at the Allianz Arena (Home of Bayern Munich) ;)

Now that would be awesome.

Perhaps the Bundisliga might be a step too far though, even for our Nic?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the terraces only for domestic games?

I think you will find they 'lock' the seats down for all UEFA games?

It would be awesome though to kit the Northam out with a set of these babies!

All of that can and does happen in seated areas. For what it's worth I'd choose to watch a game standing in an end like that every time, will be a sad day for English football when they no longer exist.

For UEFA games, they have to put seats in.

I've done a fair few grounds out in Germany. In Bundesliga 2 I've also done a few grounds and whilst most of the stands are normally half empty, the terrace is always rammed. For a recent Eintracht Frankfurt game, the ground holds 50k, there were 30k there but the terrace sold out in minutes and we missed out on tickets (luckily still jibbed on when the stewards weren't looking).

Look at P'Boro the other night, the seats went unsold but the terrace was virtually full. There is still a demand for standing, just such a shame our government use Hillsborough as an excuse for not having it.

well said, we are losing our football heritage in front of our eyes, nights like Tuesday were a reminder of how great terraces are, and the demand is still there for them.

people who go to gigs and rugby - fine, standing allowed and encourage. why should it be different with football.

That was great fun. I couldn't see much in the first half as was a bit late and right at the back but still a better experience. Brentford in league one was brilliant as well, and Ninian Park a few years back.

It is a shame that we are losing them. That said I stand on a proper terrace whenever I watch Bromley but its not quite the same when you're the only one on it.
