sandwichsaint Posted 15 April, 2012 Share Posted 15 April, 2012 Ipswich won the UEFA cup when it was worth winning, Villa won the old Europan cup. Sunderland are one of the best supported teams in the country, none of them are boring FFS. Sheffield United, now that is a dull club. Crystal Palace, a bit of a nothing club. I am well aware of the ancient and modern history of all three of the clubs I quoted. My understanding was that the OP was asking for clubs where very little currently goes on, not much has gone on for a number of seasons, or is likely to be going on for the next few seasons. No promo, no relegation, no cups, no spectacular signings, no glamour, no big-name Ron Managers, no scandal with the chairman's wife, no lurid club mascot headlines. On that basis mine were three pretty reasonable shouts. Sheff Utd are in the midst of an exciting promotion hunt, under the expert management of someone from the dark side. Palace were league cup semi-finalists a few weeks ago and seem to make the financial pages at least once a season (tho agree they are pretty dull). Epic fail, can you suggest a couple of slightly duller no-mark teams that better meet the criteria?
Lazlo78 Posted 15 April, 2012 Share Posted 15 April, 2012 Coventry, for reasons already given in this thread. I was really saddened to see how they have just withered away... now at least they get a relegation to shake things up a bit!
Lighthouse Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 I'm not sure I'd call Bradford 'dull' as such with 2 administrations and 3 relegations since they were in the Premier League. However it must be so depressing for their fans, watching them wallow in League 2 obscurity a decade after being in the Prem.
Rasiak-9- Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 Coventry, for reasons already given in this thread. I was really saddened to see how they have just withered away... now at least they get a relegation to shake things up a bit! A good mate of mine's a Cov fan and I really feel desperately sorry for the lad. He loves his club as much as we love Saints. He goes to games, buys the shirts etc. And whilst he's 21 (my age) he's old enough to remember them in the Premiership but unfortunately not old enough to have lived through enough of it himself to get much enjoyment. My pity and sympathy for him equals, or rather exceeds, my pity and sympathy for starving children in the middle of AIDS-ridden Africa, deafblind people and sufferers of muscular dystrophy. In all seriousness though he (and his Man United supporting yet Coventry-following friends) fully expect their club to stagnate in league 1 to just the same extent as they stagnated in the champo, without even a shred of hope for play-offs or anything. Really sad watching their consistently empty stadium on Soccer Saturday. I don't even think they filled it when they drew Chelsea in an FA cup tie a few years back if I remember rightly! They just need to scale down as a club. They'd be much better off as a spirited small team in a tiny but hostile ground (like S****horpe or whoever), but unfortunately things look absolutely dire for them. I used to like Coventry but honestly forgot all about them until we played them at Ricoh earlier this season. They are so undramatic and bereft of any excitement or hope that it is impossible for fans of other teams to remember them. Maybe League One will forget to include them next season? FL1: "Wasn't there supposed to come three teams down from the Championship?" CCFC: "It's us" FL1: "Noone? I only see Willie MacKays plaything and those cheaters with the huge wages" CCFC: "Seriously, it's us. Coventry. We are relegated to League One" FL1: "I guess if noone steps forward we'll have to invite another League Two team up" CCFC: "Come om you guys, what are we, invisible?!" Then they'll sit back, keep silent and over time they'll become part of the background, much like Bootstrap Bill Turner

tpbury Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 Chesterfield. I have nothing against this club, but on a scan of the 92 teams, they stuck out - not to say they haven't had any intersting times! http://www.chesterfield-fc.co.uk/page/History/0,,10435~1053686,00.html

Dr Who? Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 Rochdale, gained their promotion to league 1 after spending 36 years in the basement league. They did win promotion in 1969 from the basement league and did spend 5 years up but then were relegated in 1974. So 1921 they entered the football league through applying, and for 91 years they have spent 86 of them in the basmement league! They have never won a sausage, but have the honor of being the only basement club to reach the league cup frinal in 1962 only to lose! Oh and they are bottom of league one now, just about to re-enter the lowest league again after 2 seasons away from it! Now that for me is dull. They won a payoff final and reach semi finals in 1997. A little bit, but not much to shout about.... more than Rochdale though!
sandwichsaint Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 Barnet? I think they are still in the bottom league? Without looking it up would I be right in saying that they have played all their (comparatively short) league football in the lowest tier?

Without looking it up would I be right in saying that they have played all their (comparatively short) league football in the lowest tier? Barnet went into the league in 1991 for the first time, and have been promoted to the league higher than the basement only to be relegated to the basement league the season after. They got relegated to the conference again in 2001, and went up as champions in 2006 and still remain in the league. Yes a little dull, but not really been in the league very long. Just reading some of their history, it has been eventful to say the least!
pap Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 Good call. Any Scottish club. Total irrelevance in the world of football. I was amused by the description of Reading fans, especially as they know it too. I would say Wigan too, although I love their Chaiman and manager. What the hell they are doing in the Prem is anyones guess. Can't believe they still remain there. Wigan are in a weird place. They're building the fan base for the long term, trying to poach as many Wiganers away from starting to support the big North West clubs, but to do that, they need to be in the Premiership. Unfortunately such projects take a generation.
Saints foreva Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 Charlton. **** home support and very **** away support. Only 930 made the trip to Carlisle for their promotion on Saturday, just under 400 to St. Mary's last season and just over 1,000 the season before that when they were challenging for the auto's. Tom & Gerry Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 As one of those nervous fans I can tell you there is no pleasing us. We wouldn't want to support any other team. I suppose we should be careful what we wish for - we'd hate a boring team. But even those of you with ice in your veins that don't get too up when we win and too down when we lose can't have been lovin' it the last 2 times you've walked out of St Mary's. gonzo Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 My vote goes to Yeovil Town. Never look like getting relegated, but never look like getting out of the bottom half of League One. I kind of like them though, as they've always been a bit of an underdog ever since they got promoted from the Conference.
S-Clarke Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 wigan are far from boring...they play very exciting football and have a very good manager Wigan have amassed 23 points from a possible 33, that's just immense. Winning at Liverpool, Arsenal, at home to Stoke and Man Utd... Their last 4 games include a home game against Wolves and an away game to Blackburn. They've somehow done it again haven't they?
