Charlie Wayman Posted 17 April, 2012 Share Posted 17 April, 2012 for all your belly aching about adkins etc we are in a position where we can all be but promoted tonight and top of the league too.... I guess you saw Poyet's remarks about the PL after his Saturday's debacle, that "this lot (his team!) won't be playing the PL" and he would be buying experienced PL players in the close season (if he still has the job?) for a proper charge next season. There are stark warnings there as we are not that much better than them should we scrape into the PL.

Anyway I personally have no great illusions as to the adequacy of our squad in the PL, we'll need 6 players to be at the bare minimum standard and 10/12 more realistically. For me we only have 5 players who are PL shoe-ins.

Look at the strikers we have had in the premier in the past. I aslo think that Kelvin is worth a shot and lets face it, fox has been there and done it before. So has chappers. I dislike saints fans who slag off our players or do not give them the credit they deserve. I said at the end of last season that we'd get promoted this year and could win the league. Never had a doubt. And next season we will at the very least match Norwich - there is some serious dross in the premier, has been that way for a few seasons. Hence why the likes of blackpool, swansea and Norwich were able to go up in the first place - put simply what came down was a pile of ****. Now stop being negative and embrace that we have a good team, unproven yes, but good anyway. One final comment. De Ridder is clearly good enough for the premier, look at his skill and pace, and his crossing is generally good when he is allowed to play as an actual winger, rather than someone who has to cut inside or pull the ball back for a deep cross to the far post. This saints team will do well in the Premier, You mark my words. They just have to find the strength after this long hard season to get us there! Can't argue with your other choices but Fonte is not Premiership quality. He is too lightweight and easily bossed. Look at the way Jason Roberts (deemed surplus to requirements by a crap Prem club) dominated him last Friday. Fonte is a weak link in our defence and should be replaced whether we go up or not. Frank's cousin Posted 17 April, 2012 Share Posted 17 April, 2012 Indeed I would not! All I have ever said is that if we fail to address the shortcomings in our set-up and play and go on pretending that everything in the garden is rosy, doing the same old things in the same old way then we are going to end up get the same old outcome. If Nigel would stop and think before he talks sometimes, he would come to realise that fans are far from being morons who will swallow everything he says. He should think about this. Any ridicule he suffers he brings upon himself. Too much positivity is as bad as too little especially when things aren't going to plan as now. Believe you me I'll be chewing my bloody finger nails down to the quick tonight listening the RS lads and praying that we deliver 3 points and do nothing stupid to screw it up as we did on Friday. The differences, however, are follows: 1. The shortcommings - are indeed shortcommings if as some do you judge the side by PL standards or even 'normal' top 2 or 3 in the NPC - but as many have said ands I happen to believe the club, Nigel and most recognise that relative to the current quality we have and what has been acheived through unity or spirit, positivity and hard graft has overcome many of them and sees us with a chance of promotion 2 years early - how that and adkins can be considered a failure is beyond me. 2. If promoted (two years early) we will undoubtedly need to improve the quality if we are not to come straight back down - what we do will in part depend on the startegy That NC wishes to adopt - invest heavily just to stay up, but still risk going back down with contractual liabilities on relegation (which would be against our invest in young player long term policy), or use the season to pick up the cash - continue the building and importantly 'LEARNING' from the experience and if relegated, be well position bounce back up. 3. Adkins public witterings can be viewed in several ways - you aregue it potentially indicates a naiviety or inability - yet out league positions suggests he has gotten it right more than 22 other managers in this division - I would argue it is because of two things - 1) he has never publically analysed perofmance, or criticised the squad - he shields teh players form this and does not give anything away - given the way the media manipulate things, he keeps it light, simple and positive - and again whne you look at the table, I cant find fault in that. The othe ris that HE IS Still learning - and that is not a failing - he is young and has not had a side at this level before - he will learn from this whatever happens - you may fall into the camp that suggests there is no time for learning and out he goes - I dont believe most fans think this nor do I believe NC does - he is looking at the longer term picture and wanted a manager who would grow and develop with the club - it builds loyalty and an emotional bond that is much harder to break should he be successful and other clubs come sniffing. As wiser men than me have said - you learn more from mistakes made and show me any manager who is successful that did not make many in tehir younger days. we need to show trust and faith in someone and get some long term stability - NC knows this and wont sack just because we dont achieve or target 2 yaers early.... As you say - opinions - but my opinion is that bottom of premiership teams are not significantly better than top of championship teams and offer as my evidence the fact that Swansea and Norwich have done well without significantly adding to their squads. I think that you are overrating premiership players and underrating championship players.
