Top 5 reasons not to give a f*ck if we go up or not

Turn it in mug. If we go up or not we'll still be a club tin pot clubs like Reading can only dream of being. Real club supported by proper Fans who don't support Liverpool as well or can't be arsed to London to see Arsenal every week.

We will walk the league next season

Ticket prices will stay as they are (ish)

We wont go bankrupt buying players that are in it for the cash

Tadanari Lee and Lambert will be joint top scorers in the league

West Ham and Reading will both get relegated

Been thinking the same thing but dared not start a thread. Is promotion the be all and end all?

Much as I'd like to see us win it this year, see us win a league in my lifetime and the idea of promotion would still be a fantastic achievement on its own but the idea of the Premiership and all it brings isn't one that fills me with great excitement...

Maybe it'll be different when we get there!

If we stay down it won't be as easy as just 'going again' next year.

Next year we will have the expectation on our shoulders as we'd all expect us to compete. This season we have come into the league somewhat unsure of what to expect and it's been a good laugh so far.

We will lose players for big bucks, there's no way you can hide away from that.

I also don't believe we're going to have a good as chance as this for a long, long, long time. We need to focus and take the chance now.

Remember Ipswich 6 or so years ago? They came so close and were top 2 most of the season but lost out to Wigan I think. Their best players went (even though they were supposedly financially secure) and they now continue to bobble around doing nothing at all in the league, even with investment behind them.

We have to take the opportunity we have in front of us now, and I believe we will. It will not always be this good.

For some people it is, because as per our attendances since Relegion in 2005 a lot of fans only go based on who we are playing. For some of though that doesn't matter as we go to watch Saints and hopefully see us win. I can honestly say I'm in a weird place right now, I want Saints to win every game but I also m not fussed about being part of the Sky dream and being "plucky old Southampton, look t their fans, loving life in the premier league" which we would get for the first couple of season.

This is spot on , this aint the Div 1, we will 'probably' not be in a better position for a long time to come. We have to take the chance now!

(nothing to do with the OP though)

Why though? What's so great about being in the premier league?

Mainly because otherwise what is the point of winning if there is no end product? Simple as that, there does not need any other explanation.

But you know what, I am so intrigued at what NC is going to do next. Is he really going to take us into Europe, or is it the same old rhetric that loads of chairman come out with, see, I seem to think he will, and then it's

'what's so great about being in the Champions league'?

Load of ********, we will be just as strong, if not stronger next year IMO.

I think we will be. Sharp will prove to be a grat signing, as will TL. Dull drums has a point in that Lambert might go and no one could blame him, I think he'll be the only one though and we'd get a fair bit of cash for him.

Yeah, great, we get to the premier league. Then What? We do a West Brom or Stoke, float along and tred water. All of these dreamers claiming we are on an unstoppable march to the champions league are going to be disapointed.

Got talking to a QPR season ticket holder and a Leeds fan during the game last night. Both were saying how much more fun the Championship is.

Well they would say that.

Would be interesting to get views from Norwich and Swansea fans too.

I must admit its not great seeing your side lose most weeks which the Prem will surely mean, but i am so desperate to see the team get there.Having been top two all season

they deserve it so much and it would be heartbreaking to miss out now having got so close.I dont think i've ever felt so gutted after a defeat as i did last night as i so badly want

us to be champions and thats probably gone now but we are still so close and who knows,we may just do well in the Prem.Good luck Saints.

Why? (you do know QPR are in the PL right?)

Because they've lost most weeks this year, due to them being badly managed at all levels. We'll be much more prepared when we go up.

I remember PNE fans saying the same when they were fighting for promotion most seasons, but never quite making it. Eventually it all took it's toll and look where they sit now.

Sod being gallant losers, let's get the job done because the premier league will push this club on even more.

Oh, you didn't go then?

No, looking after my kids during Easter holidays. I know you have nobody who gives a **** about you - so are free to get burned for £1000 nylon puffa jackets and have the time to go to every match. I like my way better.

It's a bit early for this, just as it was early to talk about life in the Premiership.

Exactly, seems like another bottle job thread to me, albeit a more sophisticated one. As much as I enjoy the championship -basically our relegation in 2005 rekindled the fire to go week-in, week-out, I want to be in the prem...if only to see cortese put his money where his mouth is and see where the next leg of our journey takes us.

And if we f**k up in the prem, we've at least secured a cushty line of parachute payments.

I will look back on the past few years hugely fondly. The togetherness of the fans, those who did hartlepool, carlisle etc in the 3rd tier, being the big dogs instead of the plucky losers noone else wants to be, the fact that most of the 16000 ppl at SMS would probably still turn up even if the team was in the conference because it wasn't about money, tv or merchandise. It wasn't about bet 365 adverts and who was going to sponsor the 'kids' league cup this year. It was Southampton. It was proper football with proper supporters. Do I relish getting turned over 3-0 at Arsenal and being ripped by a smug Alan Hansen going 'it's not the first time this season I've said Danny Fox is a championship player...'? No. Rant over.

think you have missed my point mate, the argument is that NC says that is where we are going, you obviously sceptical, which is fair enough, I would say i am intrigued. And yeah, some think its a given, not sure about that, though sure about the fact that NC has done everything (well hopefully) he said he would so far. So why would you disbelive him about the CL?

I was thinking this too actually, I've absolutely loved the football league, it has been an awesome ride so far and the monotony of the PL would suck after the rollercoaster last 6 years. So here are my simple reasons.

Real football.

Real supporters.

Real grounds.

Real passion.

And not being swamped by overpaid, over rated, arrogant players and ignorant, non football educated supporters.

Against modern football!

C*nt away fans from "big" clubs

Losing more than winning

C*nt players

Sky and their ruining of football

Paying more to see us win less

Good reason IMHO. I quite like the Championship. It's certainly been more exciting & more competitive than the Premiership in recent years. However, I'd like to see us go up just to see what the outcome is with regards to NC and his pledge of European Football.

Seconded big time. Football isn't about being disappointed if you don't do the treble in a season. I feel sorry for the armchair fans of the 'big clubs' because they don't get the ride we get.

Travelling the length of the country to grounds like Prenton Park with a thousand other like minded people to follow your team because you're proud of your city and where you come from is what it's all about.

Witnessing a dramatic fall from the big time over a short period of time but still keeping faith and going to 40 games in league one regardless because it's your football club and the result doesn't matter is what it's all about.

Going to Preston on a tuesday night and getting done 5-1 but not caring because you've had a cracking day out with your mates in a place you wouldn't ever visit otherwise is what it's all about.

Going into random pubs at away days and being able to have a real discussion with opposing supporters about football and not having some pompous City supporter who has only followed the club 3 seasons tell you that your club is **** is what it's all about.

Paying a days wages for a ticket to watch us get done 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium by a bunch of arrogant players who earn more in a week than I will earn in 10 years in not what it's about.

Really? I am not sure we can run with wages at 93% of turnover for much longer can we?

Exactly. I am staggered by the amount of people who seem to think that we will simply walk the league next year. I just cannot see that happening at all. We have got ourselves into a great position this season, we wont get another chance like this in a long time - if we blow it, we stay in this league for some years to come methinks.

This is what I alluded to above, people already expect us to walk it next year if we fail this year. Straight away the expectation is on us, we've done so well this year because it wasn't on us. Next season is a different kettle of fish if we're still here and trust me, it won't be as fun as this year.

The last 2 season at my local club have been the best that I can remember. Chester City went out of business 2 years ago. A new club was founded and is self funded and run by the supporters. There's no big wig director making a mess of everything and bleeding money out of the club. They've just won their second promotion in as many seasons and will be playing in Conference North next season. Only one league below where they were when they went bump. They got over 5000 for the top of the table clash against Northwich Victoria last week. A Ryman league & new club record. It's a pleasure to be able to lend support to the club and voulenteer to help out when possible. A lot of clubs could learn a lot from their business model.

I despise what the Premiership has become. Everybody thought the Sky money was good when it poured in back in the 90's. The truth is that it's made things worse. The rich have got richer and the poor have got poorer. Get rid of the Top 4 or 5 clubs into a European league and make the Premiership more competitive.
