Gigersaint Posted 16 April, 2012 Share Posted 16 April, 2012 Another...??? Not forgetting Marc Vivien Foe, I think there has been another one or two since but not quite so high profile as he was. Sure someone on here would know the other more recent ones but I couldn't remember.
bridge too far Posted 17 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 17 April, 2012 I was alluding to the fact that Mwamba died, technically. But there have been others, professional and amateur.
hamster Posted 17 April, 2012 Share Posted 17 April, 2012 I was alluding to the fact that Mwamba died, technically. But there have been others, professional and amateur. He didn't die mrs B, there would have been a traditional funeral for him if he had.

Didn't need a funeral, of course, but he still had the minute's applause
Window Cleaner Posted 17 April, 2012 Share Posted 17 April, 2012 I was alluding to the fact that Mwamba died, technically. But there have been others, professional and amateur. in fact it's far more commonplace than you'd think.seemed to be about 1 or 2 professional players that die of heart attacks or strokes during matches every year.Thing is most of them are in relatively unknown places. In amateur football it might be as high as 5 or 6 each year on the global scale, perhaps even more.Young lad just collapsed and died during a match about 30 miles form here just a couple of weeks back. saint_bert Posted 17 April, 2012 Share Posted 17 April, 2012 Wonderful gesture from Udinesse, who are going to financially support Piermario Morisini's young sister. Morisini had a very tragic life, his mum died when he was 15, then his dad died of cancer and his disabled brother commited suicide. RIP.
JackFrost Posted 17 April, 2012 Share Posted 17 April, 2012 Antonio Puerta (La Liga in 2007) and Miklos Feher (Portuguese top flight in 2004) are two others that spring to mind
supersonic Posted 18 April, 2012 Share Posted 18 April, 2012 There was one in the Croatian league a few years ago, player smacked his head on concrete wall just feet from the pitch and died.
supersonic Posted 18 April, 2012 Share Posted 18 April, 2012 And the Motherwell Captain died of a heart attack on the pitch a few years ago too.
suewhistle Posted 19 April, 2012 Share Posted 19 April, 2012 All Italian games were called off last Sunday including our amateur women's league, which I thought was slightly over the top. Fair enough the one he played in, but everything? Poor b****r, he had a bit of a hard life too. We played a friendly instead and I actually started for the first time this season: as I'm more twice his age me popping it would be less of a surprise. Doubt if they'd call any professional games off either.

Didn't a footballer lose a finger by crashing into some netting whilst wearing a wedding ring? Isn't that why they now have to either remove rings or tape them? Dimond Geezer Posted 19 April, 2012 Share Posted 19 April, 2012 Didn't a footballer lose a finger by crashing into some netting whilst wearing a wedding ring? Isn't that why they now have to either remove rings or tape them? I think it was an Argentinian keeper, iirc he caught it on one of the hooks that the net hangs on. It was reading this that made me remove rings when I played.
Dimond Geezer Posted 19 April, 2012 Share Posted 19 April, 2012 I've done some research & was nearly right: "In 1985, Argentine goalkeeper Nery Pumpido almost lost a finger in a freak training ground accident when he caught his wedding ring on a rogue nail on the crossbar". http://goalkeepersaredifferent.com/keeper/injuryframe.htm
