Barry the Badger Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 What did people think of the atmosphere last night? From my spot in the northam I was frustrated by the lack of it. Even at 1-1, after the initial boost, it died again. Tried to get a few things going with varying success, but a lot of people around me stood silent, people I remember being much more vocal this time last season. Maybe I'm expecting too much but I thought st marys would be rocking as we tried to clinch promotion, and it really isn't.

alehouseboys Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Like the skates game, very good at times but some of our fans are a bit sensitive and too easily hurt by an opposition goal. SMS was rocking Saturday but once they equalised it seemed to rip the guts out of many for the next 20 mins. Same last night, once Reading went 2-1 up it went flat again and when the stadium (Chapel end in particular) should have been roaring every attack forward looking for a vital equaliser it was like a different place to the one earlier. Too many go quiet, let the away fans get on top which just spurs on their side.
Capel Saint Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Unfortunately there are too many fans that turn up to the game and just do not sing and spur the team on. I sit in the Chapel end and at times get frustrated with the lack of singing. It is not helped when some people go who are not there for the footy but just go with their partner. Last night a woman next to me was constantly texting her mates and not watching the game. Why bother going if you are clearly not interested in watching the game. Again I found it annoying as being a sell out, it denied a genuine fan the chance of buying a ticket. Hey ho!
S-Clarke Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Lots of frustrating people around me who were intent on moaning about everything, including crap about us not being promoted now, and one gem that I'm suprised I forgot to mention yesterday. ''This season has been a total let down if i'm honest'' - WTF goes through these moron's minds? Why would you say something like that? That's why the atmosphere is crap, because it's filled up with a load of bloody wet fannies.

Barry the Badger Posted 14 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 14 April, 2012 I don't get it at all. I'm absolutely buzzing at matches right now, just as most people seemed to be at the end of last season. I wonder if we've just been spoilt over the last 3 years and people have become too used to winning or something. I used to love it in the Northam, but recently it's been ****e. I will move seats next year to at least get near some people who are prepared to ****ing sing, not sure where would be better though.

People can't sing when they're nervous? I could understand a 10 year old being so nervous watching Saints that he goes quiet, but grown men? I don't think it's nerves, I just think the majority of our fanbase are miserable bastards.
Crazy Diamond Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Surrounded by melvins for the past two home games. Portsmouth I had a woman who knew nothing about football moaning about everything under the sun, and then only shuts up to eat sandwiches. Yesterday night I was sat to an older gentleman who asked 'who's the coloured one up front?'. Great. Can't be as bad as them though. That's the one thing I've taken out of the game last night, their fans are truly awful. Absolutely silent unless they were winning. When that equaliser was scored they might as well have not even been there.

Jack Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Was poor again last night. In 42, when at out loudest, I reckon only about 25% would be singing. I think nerves and expectation are killing it. I have no idea why though, we should just be enjoying the ride being on the bring of successive promotions.

FarehamRed Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 I think our support is better when we get 27/28k, rather than selling out. Too many JCL's dampens the support everyone else is used to giving. (And yes, I have a sore throat too).
Barry the Badger Posted 14 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Well surprise,surprise....ANOTHER thread about other fans "Standard" of support.... I take your point, and it's not usually my way to have a go at other fans. But when we tried to get something started with the team 1-1 in a crucial top of the table clash, on the verge of the premiership, at the end of 2 seasons of constant success, and look around to see nobody joining in I just do not understand it. red&white56 Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 I was in the Itchen last night - block 3 (first time I've stood there - normally in the Northam / Kingsland). I only heard the Northam / Kingsland once or twice and was generally disappointed like the OP that we all couldn't make more noise than we did. I'm back to advocating the full Northem end for singers and stuff the away fans in a corner. I don't mind people doing next to nothing to support their team, they bought the ticket so that's their right, but I'd like to avoid sitting next to them. Bensfcno1 Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Until 1-2 it was a Very good atmosphere from kingsland Northam corner! I couldn't here the royals until the 3rd went in and even tingly were very poor considering thy What they had pretty much just achieved! Perhaps they felt a bit embarrassed to win! There 2nd was very hard to take as we were bossing the game but never really looked like scoring. We became very predictable. Also last night showed that Hammond cannot play against top championship teams, we missed morgan last night, don't care what anyone says!

Ultimately your perception of the atmosphere will be largely influenced by the area immediately around you, and those around me are bloody miserable. The majority of those in front and behind me only open their mouths to groan when a pass is misplaced. It's interesting that others found the atmosphere much better where they were. Maybe Itchen North is the way forward, or just try a different area of the Northam (currently towards the back of 41).

Walking from the bridge round to the Itchen could be a pain, especially when the North car park is shut, but I'm tempted by the Itchen North. I think with the Northam suffers with a lot of people (kids?) going in there because they think it makes them proper naughty, but they don't really get behind the team. Tom & Gerry Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Why do people think atmosphere and singing are the same thing ? Singing is part of the atmoshere and can add or detract depending on the loudness, originality, etc. All sports have their own atmosphere - at some total silence is part of it. IMHO it would be very boring and annoying if there was the same level of singing throughout a match no matter what the situation. The atmosphere should change according to the ebb and flow of the game. There will be moments of nail biting tension when the crowd will be quiet- just a buzz, periods when the team needs support and periods of joy and celebration. The most impressive part of the atmosphere in the last 2 home games has been the sound when we are attacking and have scored rather than the singing. Overall I thought it was a pretty good atmosphere last night but obviously not as good as the previous game.
sotonjoe Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 You bloody woman. Did you really just write that? No you're right, having to walk the long way round the ground when they block the car park off isn't an issue at all? Course it's a factor. It's another ten minutes walk on an already 20minute walk from the pub.
Midfield_General Posted 14 April, 2012 Share Posted 14 April, 2012 Perception of the atmosphere totally depends where you are sat. I'm normally in the Northam/Kingsland corner, where our fans usually seem deafening and you only really notice the away fans if they score or get a major chant going. Last night I sat in block 3 for the first time, couldn't hear the Northam or Kingsland at all, and it seemed like their fans were unbelievably loud and singing pretty much constantly. Felt like we were being totally outsung. I guess that was down to being in front of them, in the direction the sound travels, rather than off to one side. Yet others say they could only hear their lot sing when they scored. Weird, innit.

Yet others say they could only hear their lot sing when they scored. Weird, innit. Exactly this. I sit Kingsland/North but have done many matches Itchen North and this is how it is. Comes down to crap acoustics at SMS. From the Kingsland last night you could barely hear the Reading fans other than briefly when they scored. Not surprising but the Kingsland/Northam corner sounded by far the loudest part of the stadium as that's where we were. I had a look on the Reading forum earlier and on one thread about last night's game someone was banging on how great their fans were and how St Mary's was one of the worst home supports he'd ever (not) heard. Now I know he's probably full of typical t'internet bullsh*t but just shows what away fans experience at SMS. They hear as little of the Northam/Kingsland as we do them and with the south end of the ground pretty much muted most of the time, they don't leave with a particularly good impression.
