What a truly stupid post.

We played Reading off the park. They created nothing compared to us, but some defensive howlers by what looked like mental fatigue from players who have been on top form of late cost us the game

What a load of crap.

We had a lot of possession, and couldnt do anything with it. Even our goal took a cruel deflection. I dont view ineffectual possession as the way to judge who is the better team, I view doing what needs to be done with the ball to get the desired result as the mark of the better team. And tonight much as it pains me to say it, it was Reading.

It wasn't a bad performance from us at all, but we were undone with criminal lapses of concentration - exactly the same as in the Pompey game. We need to sort that out, and fast.

Fox was abysmal all night, his ball retention was non existent and he was at fault for the first goal, no question about that. He played a stupid square pass to no one, we were out of position and reading pounced. Nice one fox.

The 2nd goal was pretty much another breakaway, we lost out in midfield through another sloppy bit of play (when we actually had the ball...) and they broke, skinned Fox and then it fell to Le Fondre.

The 3rd goal was inevitable with the way we were pressing, and they just hit us.

We dominated the game though to be honest. We just lacked that clinical finish and a consistent final pass, we had it once...but not enough. Unfortunately tonight was one of those nights where individual mistakes were punished, and if you give opportunities to players like Kebe and Roberts then you've got no chance.

The title has gone now, which is devastating for me because i wanted to see us win a league, but with Reading playing 2 home bankers they have that wrapped up - no worries. We just need to keep our composure and do the business at posh, get a win there and we take it to the last day against Coventry. I'll be happy with that, but still bloody disappointed we didn't win the league.

The message tonight though is - chin up, we were hit by 3 sucker punches today but can take alot of heart from the display. We're 3 games from the premier league.

so, let me get this straight

west ham lose tomorrow, we could be promoted at London Rd..? (pretty much)

West Ham will not lose. They might draw, but I think they will end their run of games without a win... Just probability for a team in 3rd. If they do lose we are up, the same as we would have been if we won today......we will beat Cov!

I think a balance needs to be struck here. It's not as if we didn't create anything at all... I know I criticised our forward play at times, but we did still manage 12 efforts on target and forced Federici into a few good saves. So it's not black, but it's not white.

Nope, nothing at all. We did nothing going forwards. Good point.

I agree...they will pepper brightons penalty area and they won't be able to keep them out....I feel a comfortable 3-4 nil will for west ham

Glad someone does, beginning to think it was only me.

This isn't a 'blame the fans' post before someone jumps on me, but we know we can make a difference and it just seemed we barely tried tonight.

Perhaps we were drunker? Mind you, Mr AM, weren't you at the game then?

I hope this doesn't spoil my whole weekend. I missed training tonight to watch so I hope I get off the bench on Sunday for our home game. I'd really like to take my footie frustrations out on someone, and after last week's powder snow at altitude my legs and lungs are in just the shape to do so. If I score (at footie..) I'll let you all know!

Just before their 1st and 2nd goals we were causing alot of difficulties for them but we lacked ideas when we went 2 - 1 down. We were too predictable and slow in the build up, Reading behind the ball and then hoof into the box. All the way through the game Reading were content to sit back and soak up the pressure and then with speed and space going forward hit us on the break, twice when we were on top and playing well they just waited for their chance.

Mind you if we play like that ( a part from the result) for the last 3 games we will get enough points, but it's typical Saints leaving us hanging on and keeping things close.

1 win and we will be promoted, i cant see West ham gaining 9 goals on us.

But if thy win tomorrow they are 3 points behind. Say we lose at posh and Middlesbough and beat Cov West Ham will have to win their last 3. You are right it is unlikely but possible. West Ham will draw a couple I think. Which means they will get 8 points. So best Cov and we will be up, unless they Tonk a couple teams.

Don't agree with that at all. Fox didn't prevent the cross for the first and that is fair criticism but there's still a lot to do, and it's a straight battle between Fonte and Roberts. Fonte didn't get anywhere near it. As I said earlier, scapegoating doesn't help anything but picking on Fox when that was only the first part of the goal is blinkered IMO.

The 2nd goal was pretty much another breakaway, we lost out in midfield through another sloppy bit of play (when we actually had the ball...) and they broke, skinned Fox and then it fell to Le Fondre.

Picking on Fox again when he did all anyone can do in that circumstance - stand your man up. the early cut back was not cut out, and the run wasn't picked up (Cork could've done better here IMO but again, no point picking on individuals, twas a poor team goal.

The 3rd goal was inevitable with the way we were pressing, and they just hit us.

Fair, although we had opportunities to deal with it and didn't.

All these posts either telling me what to do or abusing me, and none of them actually dealing with the issue.

Let's hope NA can be a bit more objective than "We wuz robbed", "We wuz mugged" "we had more possesion, we must be the better team" and "fate always conspires to promote the teams that truly deserve it", otherwise our promotion campaign is REALLY screwed over the last 3 games.

I thought until they stole the lead with their second goal, that is the best we have played at home for months. We absolutely battered them at times and had Lallana and Hoiveld buried reasonably simple headers at 1-1,there would only have been one winner.

They were well organised but rode their luck for long spells,if we play like that at Peterboro and Boro,we shold win both games, provided that we take our chances .

Fox was nowhere near where he should have been for the cross. Meh got sucked right in and was stood next to jos leaving Kebe all the time in the world to receive the ball.

Actually, I don't think his initial position was that bad... get pushed too far out and you're open to a ball between CB and full back. What he did wrong IMO, was to not get out quicker and closer to Kebe.

No you are talking crap.

Lallana missed a sitter, Jos SHOULD have scored a hat trick - on another day we could have scored 5 or 6. This was not a Rochdale away performance this was a day when we played the better football and were undone by schoolboy errors. 3 shots on target 3 goals? ALL from defensive errors.

STFU Alps we lost it happens.

I accept the defeat gracefully, and I understand the differences that caused us to lose. However, to say that the better team won is bullcrap, and relies purely on the scoreline rather than the anatomy of the game. Saints bossed the game, but lacked up front. Reading were on the back foot, but were clinical with their rare chances......There was also some luck involved.

No big deal, but to say Reading played better simply because of the scoreline is an idiot. They deserved the win because they took their chances, not because they played better footy throughout.

This.

Well said. See the fannies out in force again. I fully understand the folk that are ****ed off at a loss, natural reaction of any fan. But there are the usual suspects who seem to enjoy the fact that they can point to failings in the side which is simply idiotic and comes with the traditional fishy smell. We made mistakes that cost us the game - it happens to all clubs. We are not the finished article and anyone with any sense knows that, but thats not the feckin point. The point is this group of players, only promoted last season have done a magnificent job this season and now is not the time for faint hearts and doom mongers. We are still in control of our own destiny and whatever happens, I wont be having a go at a single player, the manager or the club.

Pick ourselves up, dust down and move on and dont lose faith. Feck yeah, I'm 'happy clappy' because the this team is second in the league, still 6 points ahead of 3rd with 3 games to go - think about that after where we have been and roar the lads on.

And seriously, the people who're moaning at alpine, give it a rest. I've actually seen more reasonable posts from him tonight than in a long time (sorry alps, your knee jerk stuff is usually way OTT), but people are STILL playing the man, not the ball. It's monotonous. If you disagree, deal with it and pick it apart constructively. All this *****ing at each other is sad as f*ck.

We can't deal with the issue, only NA and the players can do that. Our job is to support them for 90 minutes of every game and trust that those people who actually can influence the team's destiny find a way to deliver on our expectation of them.

I would hope he takes the players in, shows the the video from this game - highlights the individual errors and then draws a blue line under it.

We lack pace. Having invested in pace by getting Chung in in January we seemed to have addressed the issue. Unfortunately he was injured. Life has a habit of pulling these rabbits out of the hat when you don't need them. Played OK, however if we don't go up it will be down to this and this alone. If it doesn't happen this season it'll give us a benchmark for the next.

Fox and Hammond to blame for their first two goals. Yes, you could argue that we 'were robbed', but you could also argue that we committed suicide by playing stupid cross field balls in our own half and not ****ing passing the ball (yes you Hammond). I'm not angry with the performance, I'm just damned frustrated that we've led the way pretty much all season, and now look set to finish second at best (still a massive achievement, should we make it)

Reading were - deep breath - better

Christ it took nearly 50 posts before someone could say it. They have not won 14 out 16 or whatever it is for nothing. For all our possession they always looked confident on the ball and worked hard getting players back being the ball when we went forward, and opening up quickly when in possession.

Face it the best team won.

But i still think we'll be cool for automatic promotion.

Apologies for repeating myself but how many more people are going to completely ignore Fonte's inability to get anywhere near the resulting cross for the first?! Yes, Fox should've prevented it, but there was still plenty to do.

Frank, your post is a little different though. You are admitting that our team has frailties. I am objecting to seeing people post sh*t like "Reading mugged us" when they didnt. They played a strong, intelligent game tonight (I wish we could do that sometimes) and ground out the result they needed.

Good performance, Reading just too effective - channel the anger into the Peterborough match and smash them.

Davis 7 - couldn't stop any of there goals

Butterfield 7 - constant crossing was good, some worked, some didn't

Fonte 5 - failed to deal with Roberts, messed up for 3rd goal

Hooiveld 7 - dealed with Roberts better, could have scored from a corner or two

Fox 6 - didn't quite come off for him today but some great corners unfinished

Hammond 6 - shame he was caught out for their 2nd, but generally lead the team well

Cork 7 - good passing, good movement, good performance

Chaplow 5 - didn't cross the ball well, 1 mi****, poor discpline lead to early sub

Lallana 8 - really positive energetic performance, what a player

Sharp 7 - the endeavour was there, the cutting edge was snuffed out by an awesome Reading backline

Lambert 7 - dominated Pearce in the first half as Roberts did to Fonte, but wasn't quite involved enough at the end for me

De Ridder 8 - fantastic energy, caused them problems, great work to stop Roberts

Guly 6 - good passing but didn't change the result

Lallana was useless second half. He is getting shown up. Sharp was useless.

There was no cheating

There was no robbing

There was no mugging

Reading are a good team. Their defending, movement, counter play, energy levels and agression get the job done. They withstood our pressure and hit us as soon as we literally took our eye off the ball.

By contrast we are too casual, too slow, too into one touch too many and the clever pass.

Rickie was the best player on the pitch, but there was far too many screw-ups in midfield and our defence is f**king shocking.

Reading are the Champions, and over 46 games will have earned it.

Us ? We have some serious sh*t soul searching and work to do in the next few days to prevent this season being for nought.

Bang on the money.

Yep, lets just hope we stagger over the line before Wham.

I think that's a little over-dramatic. We are still in a strong position and if anything, our away form is currently better.

Now is the time for composure and belief.
