kpturner Posted 12 April, 2012 Share Posted 12 April, 2012 (edited) Interesting interview on SSN today with Big Sam. He was first asked of his assessment of Saint's and Reading's achievements in the season so far - and he was hugely complimentary about Saints and the fact that they have remained consistently in the top 2 all season. There was also a slightly surreal moment when he was asked about how his players were handling the pressure and he said something along the lines of "you can hear the lads now, really enjoying their training"....and you couldn't hear a thing! The interviewer laughed because he thought Sam was being ironic - but I don't think he was. He could just hear something we could not Asked if he had given up on the top two and naturally he said no. If they win all their games they will have 88 (enough for auto-promotion last season) - and if they do that he believes they will be in the top 2. I expect the interview will appear in full at some point on the Sky Sports website. Edited 12 April, 2012 by kpturner

He's obviously hoping that there is a winner and a loser tomorrow night because if there isn't his side has 0% chance of automatic promotion although they'll probably win their last 4 games. I fully expect Wham to pick up 12 points from their next 4 games.

Nope West Ham will slip up at least once. Not saying they will lose but I think we will need 4 points. Win tomorrow and we are nearly there. Lose and we need to beat Posh to keep the wolf or the hammer from the door.

Having had a peek at the stats, they've had only one 4 match winning streak this season.

He's obviously hoping that there is a winner and a loser tomorrow night because if there isn't his side has 0% chance of automatic promotion although they'll probably win their last 4 games. Actually... http://www.sportsclubstats.com/England/ChampionshipLeague.html Southampton vs Reading Saints Win Chance wins title / Promoted Southampton 88.4 / 99.7 Reading 11.1 / 90.8 West Ham 0.4 / 34.5 Draw Chance wins title / Promoted Southampton 59.2 / 97.7 Reading 39.5 / 95.5 West Ham 1.3 / 31.8 Reading Win Chance wins title / Promoted Southampton 23.3 / 94.8 Reading 76.1 / 99.1 West Ham 0.7 / 31.1 According to those stats, a Saints win gives West Ham a 34.5% chance of going up, the draw leaves them with a 31.8% chance, and a Reading win reduces that likelihood even further, to 31.1%. So actually, the draw's not even the worst result for them. Nevertheless, the worst case scenario for West Ham still leaves them with a 31.1% better chance of promotion than you've claimed (though it looks poor compared to Saints' "worst case" scenario of 94.8% and Reading's of 90.8% even if those sides lose). However, a West Ham defeat to Brighton leaves them with only a 26.7% chance of promotion (without considering the Saints v Reading unknown). Fowllyd Posted 12 April, 2012 Share Posted 12 April, 2012 Big Fat Sam has done this one already hasn't he? He's pretty matey with Sir Alec Ferguson I believe - but he's not in the same league when it comes to mind games. Or when it comes to managing a football team, come to that. The9 Posted 12 April, 2012 Share Posted 12 April, 2012 I'm still waiting for him to "warn" the Football League about the possibility of us fixing a draw via gentleman's agreement, as suggested by some melon on KUMB earlier this week.
positivepete Posted 12 April, 2012 Share Posted 12 April, 2012 Well, we have form. Didn't we "fix" the match against Spuds in order to gain promotion some years ago
The9 Posted 12 April, 2012 Share Posted 12 April, 2012 Well, we have form. Didn't we "fix" the match against Spuds in order to gain promotion some years ago Even if we had previous and there was the remotest chance of doing it this time, I think rigging the second most beneficial mutual result with 3 matches to go would be a preeeeeeeetty stupid move. Rasiak-9- Posted 13 April, 2012 Share Posted 13 April, 2012 If we lose tomorrow, it could get nasty. I fully expect Wham to pick up 12 points from their next 4 games. As with any four games of football its possible but unlikely. If Leicester have anything to play for on the penultimate day of the season to go away there and win would be very, very tough.
