Maggie May Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Maybe this question has been asked already but has there been a team in recent history to achieve this feat?
Aardvark Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 No - it's such an impossibility that nobody's ever achieved successive promotions before. At least if they have, it must have been SO LONG ago that nobody could possibly remember it.
Marsdinho Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Good question, I'm going to write to the FA and see if they can get their historian on the case. Someone must know the answer surely...
doddisalegend Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 No - it's such an impossibility that nobody's ever achieved successive promotions before. At least if they have, it must have been SO LONG ago that nobody could possibly remember it. Yes but Norwich didn't win the championship ....did they ? which is what the OP is asking ...not the we have either (yet)
Minty Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 No - it's such an impossibility that nobody's ever achieved successive promotions before. At least if they have, it must have been SO LONG ago that nobody could possibly remember it. You may want to pause the sarcasm and re-read the exact question being asked.
CFSFC Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Good question I thought. Can't remember one in a long long time. Still we ain't there yet.
Saint Mark1 Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 No - it's such an impossibility that nobody's ever achieved successive promotions before. At least if they have, it must have been SO LONG ago that nobody could possibly remember it. OP did not asked about successive promotions, they asked who had WON the championship after being promoted from league 1. Guess that rules Norwich out!
Barry the Badger Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 No - it's such an impossibility that nobody's ever achieved successive promotions before. At least if they have, it must have been SO LONG ago that nobody could possibly remember it. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn. Good question, don't know.
Aardvark Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 OK, having re-read the OP I have the definitive answer: Queens Park Rangers. It says nothing about "successive" promotions.
alpine_saint Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 You may want to pause the sarcasm and re-read the exact question being asked. A lot more of that is required on here sometimes, Minty..
Guided Missile Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Wolves, Wimbledon, Man City and Watford have achieved successive promotions.
alpine_saint Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Wolves, Wimbledon, Man City and Watford have achieved successive promotions. but that wasnt the question, FFS. Another dyslexic/illiterate gimper...
hedgeend Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Oxford in 83-84 won div 3 and then won div 2 the following season
Lets B Avenue Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Wolves, Wimbledon, Man City and Watford have achieved successive promotions. So did QPR in the sixties.
norwaysaint Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 This is where it's such a shame we didn't win League One, then we could still be on for winning three different divisions in a row. Now it'll just be two.
hedgeend Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 no they didn't QPR came up as runners up to Ipswich (sorry to be a bit of an anorak !!!!!!!)
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 but that wasnt the question, FFS. Another dyslexic/illiterate gimper... In one post you tell Minty that tighter moderation is required, then in another you dish out abuse to another poster?? Anyway, I don't remember anyone doing what the OP is asking, good question though.
Lets B Avenue Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 no they didn't QPR came up as runners up to Ipswich (sorry to be a bit of an anorak !!!!!!!) Never said they did. Try reading the posts before choosing what coat to wear.
Mowgli Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Given that the Championship has only been in existence since 2004 it was not a difficult question. No - no one has ever done it before. Norwich were the only team to get back to back promotions. But Oxford were promoted as Champions from Div 2 in 83/4 and then went up to the old 1st division as Champions in 84/5. Boro went up from Div 2 as runners up in 86/7 and then to the top flight through the playoffs the following year Watford got promotion from the old 2nd division as Champions in 1997/8 and then went up to the Premier League the following year as play off winners. Man City were promoted to Lge 1 as play off winners in 98/99 and then to the Premier League the following season as runners up (lasting only a season before bouncing back as Div 1 Champions in 2001/2). QPR won the old 3rd division in 1966/7 and then were promoted as runners up to the top division the following year.
MongoNeil Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Surely IF we win the Championship this year (not counting any chickens yet) then we'll have the 2nd highest possible positive league finishing position difference between consecutive seasons. This could only be better if we had come up from League One via the playoffs.

A point that you have just proven in a way I could not have imagined a better example of... Alps, please calm down mate - I like reading your opinions and thoughts but they always seem to be presented as if you are straining with constipation - your'll end up with hypertension/piles! I know the league position and end of season nervousness is effecting us all, but you have been like this all season! (Please take this comment in humourous spirit in which it was intended)
Kingsland Codger Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Maybe this is one for us oldies - taking the Championship to mean "second tier" and League 1 to mean "third tier" ... Try Northampton Town in the 1960s. They won a few successive promotions (through all 4 leagues, IIRC and then promptly went straight back down again). However, I don't know the stats websites that might give the definitive answer.
alpine_saint Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Alps, please calm down mate - I like reading your opinions and thoughts but they always seem to be presented as if you are straining with constipation - your'll end up with hypertension/piles! (Please take this comment in humourous spirit in which it was intended) piles is no laughing matter.
Minty Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 I didnt tell Minty tighter moderation is required, I said this site could benefit with people taking the time to read posts from others properly before firing off the abusive/sarky response. The site could do without any abusive/sarky responses, full stop. A bit of tolerance and humility would do wonders. Anyway, back to the OP, and thanks to Mowgli it seems that Oxford were the last team to win 'Division 1' as it should be known in 84/85, after being promoted the season before. Glad that's sorted.
Guided Missile Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 but that wasnt the question, FFS. Another dyslexic/illiterate gimper... Right, I'm switching your webcam on until you apologise.

Dig Dig Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 but that wasnt the question, FFS. Another dyslexic/illiterate gimper... Something wrong with being dyslexic?
Frank's cousin Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 piles is no laughing matter. Indeed, I guess the old arse grapes would at least give fans a proper excuse for not sitting down like good boys and girls
Colinjb Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Fulham under Keegan I think No, they had at least one season of mid-table at Championship level before Jean Tigana led them to winning the Championship.
Colinjb Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 I would suggest the best place to look would be to see the winners of the championship and predecessors in this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_winners_of_English_Football_League_Championship_and_predecessors And compare it to all clubs who have achieved promotion from League 1 and predecessor level in this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_winners_of_English_Football_League_Championship_and_predecessors
Colinjb Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 I believe we have an answer! Oxford United won the old division 3 in 1983/4 and then immediately won promotion as champions to the old first division by winning the second division in 1984/5.
SaintBobby Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 I wonder if anyone has taken a team so far in less than two seasons as Adkins? Gaining 40+ places in under two seasons is amazing.
Window Cleaner Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 I believe we have an answer! Oxford United won the old division 3 in 1983/4 and then immediately won promotion as champions to the old first division by winning the second division in 1984/5. With Chicken George I think.
Pilchards Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 I wonder if anyone has taken a team so far in less than two seasons as Adkins? Gaining 40+ places in under two seasons is amazing. What about the quickest a team has dropped in 2 years?
bender Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 What about the quickest a team has dropped in 2 years? Has to be Plymouth surely.
Colinjb Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 (edited) Has to be Plymouth surely. Luton? 10th in the championship in 2005/06 to consequetive relegations in the next 3 seasons. Edited 12 April, 2012 by Colinjb
Maggie May Posted 12 April, 2012 Author Posted 12 April, 2012 This thread is more fun than playing Dig Dug on my old IBM PC (pronounced eebumpook). #phonejacker.
beavis17 Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Luton? Stockport? They're towards the bottom of the Conference at the moment!
Colinjb Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Stockport? They're towards the bottom of the Conference at the moment! Darlington may be a good shout. Not just near the relegation zone but pretty much nailed on for it. If we are going for the biggest drop in two years, it'll be interesting to see where the Skates end up next year. See if it can rival the demise/reformation of clubs like Halifax, Maidstone, Aldershot, Chester City etc.
Minty Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 I believe we have an answer! Oxford United won the old division 3 in 1983/4 and then immediately won promotion as champions to the old first division by winning the second division in 1984/5. Just like Mowgli posted at 0954 this morning... ;-)
Colinjb Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Just like Mowgli posted at 0954 this morning... ;-) Hidden answer yes. Some of us like to simply 'scan' these threads. Kudos to Mowgli.
charliemiller Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Fulham ? in the Jean Tigana , Collins days ?
SO5 4BW Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 What about the quickest a team has dropped in 2 years?Wolves dropped from the old div one in 1983-84 and had three successive relegations - started 1986-87 in div four - so has to be them unless anybody else has done that
Hamilton Saint Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 OP did not asked about successive promotions, they asked who had WON the championship after being promoted from league 1. Guess that rules Norwich out! ... but implied. (It's called 'reading between the lines'.)
Marsdinho Posted 12 April, 2012 Posted 12 April, 2012 Didn't Cambridge Utd do some sort of mad yo yo, up (and then down) through the leagues circa 1990.
