Last team to win the Championship after promotion from League One

No - it's such an impossibility that nobody's ever achieved successive promotions before. At least if they have, it must have been SO LONG ago that nobody could possibly remember it.

Yes but Norwich didn't win the championship ....did they ? which is what the OP is asking ...not the we have either (yet)

You may want to pause the sarcasm and re-read the exact question being asked.

OP did not asked about successive promotions, they asked who had WON the championship after being promoted from league 1. Guess that rules Norwich out!

Given that the Championship has only been in existence since 2004 it was not a difficult question. No - no one has ever done it before. Norwich were the only team to get back to back promotions. But Oxford were promoted as Champions from Div 2 in 83/4 and then went up to the old 1st division as Champions in 84/5. Boro went up from Div 2 as runners up in 86/7 and then to the top flight through the playoffs the following year

Watford got promotion from the old 2nd division as Champions in 1997/8 and then went up to the Premier League the following year as play off winners. Man City were promoted to Lge 1 as play off winners in 98/99 and then to the Premier League the following season as runners up (lasting only a season before bouncing back as Div 1 Champions in 2001/2). QPR won the old 3rd division in 1966/7 and then were promoted as runners up to the top division the following year.

Surely IF we win the Championship this year (not counting any chickens yet) then we'll have the 2nd highest possible positive league finishing position difference between consecutive seasons. This could only be better if we had come up from League One via the playoffs.

In one post you tell Minty that tighter moderation is required, then in another you dish out abuse to another poster??

Heheheheh. And it continues !!!!!

I didnt tell Minty tighter moderation is required, I said this site could benefit with people taking the time to read posts from others properly before firing off the abusive/sarky response.

A point that you have just proven in a way I could not have imagined a better example of...

Alps, please calm down mate - I like reading your opinions and thoughts but they always seem to be presented as if you are straining with constipation - your'll end up with hypertension/piles! I know the league position and end of season nervousness is effecting us all, but you have been like this all season!

Maybe this is one for us oldies - taking the Championship to mean "second tier" and League 1 to mean "third tier" ... Try Northampton Town in the 1960s. They won a few successive promotions (through all 4 leagues, IIRC and then promptly went straight back down again). However, I don't know the stats websites that might give the definitive answer.

The site could do without any abusive/sarky responses, full stop. A bit of tolerance and humility would do wonders.

Anyway, back to the OP, and thanks to Mowgli it seems that Oxford were the last team to win 'Division 1' as it should be known in 84/85, after being promoted the season before. Glad that's sorted.

I would suggest the best place to look would be to see the winners of the championship and predecessors in this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_winners_of_English_Football_League_Championship_and_predecessors

And compare it to all clubs who have achieved promotion from League 1 and predecessor level in this list:

Stockport? They're towards the bottom of the Conference at the moment!

Darlington may be a good shout. Not just near the relegation zone but pretty much nailed on for it.

If we are going for the biggest drop in two years, it'll be interesting to see where the Skates end up next year. See if it can rival the demise/reformation of clubs like Halifax, Maidstone, Aldershot, Chester City etc.

I believe we have an answer!

Oxford United won the old division 3 in 1983/4 and then immediately won promotion as champions to the old first division by winning the second division in 1984/5.

Just like Mowgli posted at 0954 this morning... ;-)
