If we lose this one and WHU win against BHA then P'boro becomes VERY important! Lose the next 2 and we could be level with WHU with M'boro away then Cov who might still be fighting for champ survival!

This is worst case!

Best case...... we win all the next 4 :) :)

Somewhere between the two will do

That's why I wouldn't take a draw now.

Also, I reckon it's about a 40% chance of a Saints win, 30% a draw, and 30% a Reading win. I'll take those odds.

Of course I may change my mind at 1:45 pm on Friday.

I'm in the "want to win the league, not just get promoted" camp.

But, a draw would keep us in pole position.

Given our GD, we'd only need to match Reading over the last three games and I think we would.

So, even though I think we are slight favourites to win, I'd take a draw now.

Friday isnt the "make or break" people are making out, it really is just another game

I'm just going to enjoy it what ever result really, even if we lose.... we're 6 points clear of 3rd place with 4 games left! I'd have bitten your hand off for that at the begining of the season.

I can see us winning away at peterborough & at home to cov & thats enough for us to go up with our goal difference & with Middlesborough on their terrible run a win there is possible too!! The ultimate prize in this division whether you finish first or second is promotion.

What I dont want to see is an unsettled\nervous crowd, we can enjoy it, we deserve to enjoy it, so do Reading. It should be a party atmosphere!!!

Yes, but I am of the opinion you have a high chance of achieving the result below the one you play for. Ergo, play for a draw and you lose.

Always, always play for a win. A draw against Reading is not a bad result, but we certainly shouldnt play for it.

Mathematically, Wham can still pass us. We need 6 more points to be certain, 3 will probably do it, but lets see.

Reading are fairly resilient and that showed last night but really they're far from unbeatable. Even 10 man Leeds could have had them if they weren't so interested in having a punch up.

Saints record at home against the top teams this season is pretty good and I'd be expecting nothing less than a win against a Reading team that are due to concede a few. Our lads will create chances and some nice composure in front of goal will hopefully see us through.

Oh yes, and do NOT concede any sort of free kick within 25 yards of our goal.

The question is/was Would you take a draw against Reading? Yes, I would like to win, but I'd take a draw right now. Simple, we would still be top, and have 3 very winnable games left, thus, still be top!

Really ?

Peterborough are awkward b*stards managed by the Son of Most Awkward B*stard of All, and therefore an awkw*rd bastard himself - you never know which team will turn up

Middlesbrough might have a very poor run of form currently, but poor runs of form end sometime, and they still just about have something to play for

Coventry might save themselves by beating us.

If either side wins this game they will win the title, sorry Rickie but you're wrong.

Reading will win the 3 games afterwards and if they should beat us the title is theirs. If we want to win the Championship, which I assume we do, we need not to lose on Friday and preferably win because Palace,Forest and a play-off preparing Birmingham aren't going to do the job for us.

If we lose and Wham win things could turn nasty. Promotion is the only thing that counts, I would take a draw. Promotion is the only thing that matters.

Of course, the big question will be if Wham will implode. I don't think so. They were very unlucky against Brum and see them winning 4 if they have too !

Define "take a draw".

"Take" implies choice.

Are we saying something along the lines of - would you take a draw rather than have the option of say...a coinflip for a win/lose outcome?

Or are we simply saying would you be pleased/displeased/tolerant of a draw in terms of how you feel afterwards?

take a draw and not bother playing. (If possible)

You know what, I'd take that draw against our new nearest rivals Reading even if it meant that we disappeared through the trap door of football life a few weeks later. It means that much to me that we do not lose at all costs.

Win and we are up pretty much. Would mean West Ham would have to win every game and we would have to lose every game. Would much rather end it on friday at home then going into two away games at tricky places hoping to get that win. Because if we don't and it all boils down to the last game we will be playing a team fighting for survival. We more then anyone should know when you have your last game and you need to win to stay in the division sometimes miracles can happen. Especially when it is against the top team and the odds are stacked against you. We need to avoid that situation more then anything in my opinion.

So beat Reading and we won't have to worry about the next three games so much because one slip up from West Ham means we are up.

My thoughts exactly. Looking at the Reading forum they are pretty split on whether they can beat us or not, I say we go for it.

Reading have been lucky their last 2 games. It looked like they werent going to beat 10 men Leeds for most of the game and how Brighton didnt score last night is beyond me.

If Brighton had had finishers like Sharp and Lambert, Reading would have lost last night.

There is no logic to 'taking a draw'.

If you would take a draw, you are essentially saying that you think Reading are a better team and are likely to beat us, otherwise you'd take your chances.

If you think that, then by extension you think that they will better our results for the remainder of the season.

If that is the case, then a draw doesn't help us, as they will win the league regardless.

The only advantage to taking the draw, therefore, would be to get the 1 point benefit over losing it would offer us against West Ham. And that only becomes relevant if you think West Ham will be 7 points (but not 8 points) better than us over the remaining 3 games. Which means 3 wins for them, and only 2 draws and one defeat for us. which would be pessimistic to the extreme.

So essentially, being happy with a draw (before kick off) has zero benefit.

From Brightons forum

I really think Reading are there for the taking. Last few games:

Brighton A: Totally rode their luck. It was constant Albion on the radio and they missed a pen.

Leeds H: Leeds looked as much in the game as they did for most of it.

Wham A: Fair enough tremendous.

Posh A: Lost 3 - 1.

Reading know after last nights game they can afford to lose. Even if Wham were to break a habit and win at home, they are still 3 ahead of Wham with 2 easy home games to come.

Surprised at you Alpine ! For one so cautious, even to suggest that three points is enough is verging on lunacy ! If we only get three points from the last four games I am pretty sure we will finish third as I think Wham can win their next 4.

Nicked this form the posts....

I'm really annoyed we didn't win that, didn't expect us to win, but we deserved 3 points tonight. Have we had a single good refereeing display at home this season?

Err...to right you have....D`Erso

Go for the jugular from the kick-off. 2-0 after 20 minutes, concede a goal early 2nd half to make for a nervous last half hour but score a 3rd at the death as Reading push forward to get the equaliser.

Now then...if I'm right, who wants the lottery numbers for Saturday? :)

Win, lose or draw; none of those results would surprise me at all. If I had to put money on it, which isnt something I often do, it would be on a very hard fought score draw. Too close to call imho, more so when you look at reading's last dozen results. Think the only defeat was at posh, and they are always a bit of a wild card game, other than that they have had solid wins home and away. We'll have to be at the top of our game to walk away with 3 points.

I agree with 2/3 of that. If Boro and Coventry have anything to play for, they will probably be hard to beat.

But Posh are now in holiday-on-the-beach mode, and are there for the taking. Oh, and they're not very good at the best of times.

I wouldn't TAKE a draw, no, I would ACCEPT the draw if it happened, it's a better result for us than it is for Reading, but no I would rather have the chance to fight for a win. I reckon the pressure may get to Reading on Friday, especially as they're away from home. With so many friends of mine that are Reading fans, I really REALLY want us to win this, but if it is a draw then it's a straight 3 game fight for the title. Lose, and while we may still get promoted, it'd be something special to win the title, as we'd be needing Reading to slip up. (Doable - their last game is against Brum...)

You're probanly wrong. Brighton could easily have beaten Reading. Brum could easily have beaten West Ham. Both games could easily have been draws, both could easily have gone the other way...

Right now, this is how leagues work. Pressure tells. It's not about results you expect. It's about fine margins, luck, mental fortitude and the unexpected. Look at Wigan and QPR tonight. Some teams respond well to pressure, some don't. Some do some days...

It's fecking brilliant! :)
