Professor Posted 11 April, 2012 Share Posted 11 April, 2012 Worried by the Portsmouth result. How can it be that we could not beat them last Saturday, yet Millwall can beat them at FP in front of their own fans and previously, Burnley thrashed them? They scored two excellent goals against us but only because we let them have the ball. Are we playing possession football as well as we did earlier in the season? It was a Derby and they clearly raised their game. Now they are a laughing stock. We only need to beat Reading or Posh and were there, considering were playing Cov at home who look like they'll already be down.
bender Posted 11 April, 2012 Share Posted 11 April, 2012 They will be absolutely desperate to go 3 points clear of us, make no doubts about that. A win against us will pretty much win the league for them due to the 2 home games they have directly after. This is huge for both teams. Yes but imagine if they had drawn or even lost tonight. Defeat to us would have left the door open for wham to go 2nd on Sat. I think Fridays game will be very defensive. That said Brighton would have beaten Reading tonight if they had Lambert & Sharp. Very excited about going.

I had the pompey game on radio solent in the background last night (keeping an ear out for the Reading game) and pompey were by all accounts shockingly bad. They gave everything in the game against us and played well above their level (and we were still easily the better team on saturday) last night they went back to their normal level of play and lost. I suppose you could say that on Saturday they still had some sort of realistic chance of avoiding relegation plus it was a derby. The Bristol City result against Coventry probably just put an end to any chance of avoiding relegation and last night's performance probably reflected that. MbaleSaint Posted 11 April, 2012 Share Posted 11 April, 2012 How would you prefer Portsmouth's relegation? Would you like them to go down by more than ten points, so that they can't even blame the points deduction and have to admit they were one of the worst teams in the league? Or would you prefer them to go down by fewer than ten points, so that they have the pain of knowing that on the pitch they did well enough to stay up, but won't? If they go down by more than ten points then the points deduction gets carried forward to next season, as with us. That would be best.

No the points only get carried over if you were already relegated before the deduction hence why Stockport county who went into admin the same time as us didn't have a points deduction the following season in league one with us. You cannot look at it as simplistic as that. Derby games create an even playing field, it was never a case of top facing bottom 3. It was level from the moment we kicked off. Generally they are ****, but a Derby gives you an extra % and that got them through - although I still think we took the **** at times against them. 2 wonder goals, albiet with too much space. It's like when we played Man Utd in the cup a couple of years ago. We played out of our skins and took the lead before a couple of mistakes let it slip. Based on that performance you would have said we were a top 6 Premier League side, but of course we weren't. We were just a League 1 side who massively raised our game for a big occasion, which is exactly what Pompey did. I wont claim I knew Pompey would lose last night, but if I had to put my money somewhere that's what I'd have said. After giving it absolutely everything in a local derby their is always likely to be a hangover. Turning up for a game just 3 days later, knackered, near the end of the season and suddenly all that extra passion and from the last game isn't there. It must be difficult to put in a performance.
