Claridge almost choke whilst conceding Saints had done enough for auto promotion on The Football League Show last night? shame he didn't go the whole hog (-;

Skate or not, I don't think that he has been anything other than complimentary about us this season and he laid into Portsmouth as being entirely responsible for their own demise when he was asked a few weeks back.

Claridge has had praise for us all season. If there is a pundit out there who we should be bashing it should be Robbie Savage. The other week he claimed we'd bottle it and Reading & West Ham would go up automatically, and before the Skates game he predicted we'd lose our next 3 games (well he has that wrong already). Don't know what his beef is with Saints, but the guy is a grade A c*ck.

If there is only one, it has to be Lawrenson. He has always been negative about us even in our Premiership days. The other week against Blackpool, he said premiership teams dont concede goals like that. F*cking Liverpool do.

Don't know why he still gets stick from some.

What is wrong with you people??? Knowledgable?? He's a f***ing skate. Remember the Millwall game when he scored and turned round pointing to his name on the back of his shirt? skate.

The BBC commentators description of his reaction when they equalised at theirs? Went mental apparently. skate

I saw the programme and he did have trouble conceding that we had almost done enough. skate

Wouldn't expect anything else - f***ing skate c**t

Watched it - didn't see anything like that at all. Perfectly reasonable and fair observations from him almost all the time.

my dad tells me Paul Walsh did the game on Sky yesterday, Dad said you could see him struggling with praising Saints.

to be fair my old man is late 70's and whilst a season ticket holder in the Kingsland his faculties are beginning to go so not sure if it is true or not

What about when Rednapp left Pompey and took over at Southampton? Pompey fans were going ballistic because Claridge defended Rednapp's right to make the switch. I remember a phone-in where Pompey fans were saying "how can you say that when you are supposed to be a Pompey fan" - to which his reply was (roughly) "I am not a Pompey fan - I am just an ex-Pompey player. I am also an ex-(list of several) player also". Sure, given the choice between the two teams in a head-to-head contest he will be rooting for Pompey - but that doesn't stop him from offering fair comment in his professional capacity as a pundit.

I remember Kevin Bond gobbing on Paul Walsh in a Littlewoods Cup game (I think) against Liverpool. He wasn't too pleased.

Claridge is fair, never had a problem with him. I think he's one of the most balanced and intelligent pundits out there, I always listen to what he has to say as he's quite often bang on the money.

He's also admitted that he's watched us most weeks this year! I think he's generally a pretty big fan of south coast football.

I noticed that too - claridge is a fair bloke like most others have said and i think he likes to see teams from the south coast doing well, paul walsh on the other hand is a total prik

Hang on a minute, I'm sure I heard Savage say on 5-live that we wouldn't get auto, and quite recently. The main time I usually hear him is on the post-match saturday phone-in so it was most likely on there, and I'm near certain he said exactly what saints is the south suggested.

Plus, I agree with Jeff the hackie, Claridge did look sick to his stomach on the FL show.

He coughs again at the end of the segment. He has a cough sore/throat imo. Can we stop concentrating on these trivial imagined issues, and focus on the big debating points, such as:

1) Why morons who skip on to the picth and twirl the corner flag like a majorette in the ultimate pathetic 'look at me' display are the bestest most passionate fans in the world.

2) Why Guly was upset at the end of the game on monday. - on pitch reasons, or stolen jam from his doughnut?

3) What combanation of seating/singing/hats and dance numbers by approx 32,000 others will ultimatley satisfy griffo and make it bearable for him to make and appearance at matches, or if this is not possible, maybe he should just not attend?

If you think that things are bad now with pundits wait until next season.

We will be everybody's favourites to go down. The Times this year had us to finish c 16th. I doubt if next season anyone will have us that high in their predictions.

Bearing in mind that we seem to play badly whenever on national TV (Blackpool, Leicester , Leeds) you can perhaps see why we are underrated. Lets hope so , so that we can take the Premiership by storm in the same way as we have taken the Championship

Try putting in context - it was a cup tie, he had been abused by 30 000 all afternoon and then scored what might have been the winning goal having made Beattie look like a novice centre forward all match, what would you expect him to do? What would would you have done in his shoes?

I remember this. It was the league cup semi-final and he got sent off for kicking Kevin Bond up the a*se. I also think he was praising us through gritted teeth yesterday.

The game was a 0-0 draw I think and then we lost the return leg.

I don't understand the confusion here. He's got a long association with PFC, and wants them to do well. But he's employed as a pundit, and in that role he needs to be fair and impartial - which he does.

If he's watching Saints v Portsmouth of course he'll support the skates - but after the match, in his pundit role, he'll give a balanced view of what went on. You might not always agree with what he says - but then the skates won't always agree with what he says about them, either.

It is actually possible to be a supporter of a club, but not be wearing their shirt every second of every day.

He's one of the good guys - back in 2004/5 when some of us were organizing a kids game between Pompey fans and Saints fans in aid of a local charity Claridge offered to ref it, Paul Walsh took part, and from our side we had Joe Tess*m etc... were great on the day and happy the saints kids won! He played for Portsmouth so what do folk expect? He's bound to have more of affinity for the skates, yet has been pretty baanced and complimentary about us this season - I met him and good for a bit of banter - nice bloke.

I'll put my hat in the Claridge fair and ok corner. Didn't think so at the beginning of the season but he's had nothing but praise for us all year and not even through gritted teeth. Whether or not he's a good pundit or not I'm not so sure but there aren't many good ones out there.

Without being rude - I'm sort of hoping that you're not older than 13. You have some serious issues. Have a think about some of the people who have been associated with both us and the skates - do you hold them all with the same distain.

Steve Claridge is (imo) one of the more knowledgable pubdits on the BBC - he knows the leagues, the players, managers and personalities that he comments on. I have both heard him on radio and seen him on tv often give us high praise - but the reality is that he just tells it like it is. As somebody above has already said - he was one of the most outspoken media person when commenting on the skates current administration. He didn't pull any punches, and gave a forthright honest opinion. I didn't see the FLS, but if he choked trying to praise our current achievements - I'll take it as a back handed compliment - thanks Steve.
