For me Saturday was a golden opportunity to exact some revenge for the 4-1 drubbing at Fratton Park in our relegation season from the Premier League.

It looks like it is going to be a long time before we get another opportunity, so for me it is definitely opportunity lost and a small black mark on what otherwise has been a golden near perfect season.

Just a shame really, but if we go up as champions will I care, probably not!

In footballing terms, you're absolutely right Wurzel. The point on Saturday guaranteed the play-offs at the very least and returned us to the top of the league. And, throwning the win on Monday into the equation (and West Ham's draw) things are looking very nice indeed.

But in local rivalry terms it was very disappointing. We let them off the hook in a dire game at their place, and on Saturday - despite dominating the game completely - we let them off the hook again. Saturday was a chance to get a little payback for a couple of very bad results we've had against them - and we blew it.

The footballing perspective is far and away the most important thing - so I'll take the four points from two games without question, but there was a bonus prize on offer, and we didn't take it.

We have been talking about the weekends results in the office this morning and we all agree that the form book and league position will always go out the window on games of this nature. But it still won't make my mood any better as I want to exact revenge for the 4-1 at our place and their place.

Frankly it's nicely set up for us to draw them in the FA Cup with them as a League One side (if they're lucky, they'll have to still exist and win two cup matches to get to us first).

With us in the Prem it'll be the expected 4 goal thrashing at Fratton (if they're lucky they've still got a ground) which they thoroughly deserve as payback for the FA Cup reversal. Then all we have to do is win an FA Cup and forget to pay anyone for anything, blah blah. I don't want them to be in the same league as us again to have the chance to pay back the 4-1 at Fratton, to be honest.

I quite like the idea of us reverting to them being an occasional annoyance that's nowhere near our level, much better than actually having to play them, ;)

Basically I don't think our players our as fussed about the rivalry as are Poopey players. They were fired up and desperate to stick one up us. Our squad didn't seem any more or less enthusiastic than usual, might as well have been Coventry, Donny or any bottom team as far as they were concerned. Often that sort of coolness can be an asset but it didn't work in our favour today.

In terms of the bigger picture, Wurzel is spot on.

But that 2005 4-1 defeat still feels like a festering sore. I wanted them annihilated.

I agree. That 2005 game hurt like no other in my life. It wasn't so much the score, but the manner of our defeat and what it meant (ie relegation was a reality). The Cup game was an irrelevant blemish on a great season - Wembley, getting our club back etc, as we watched them implode. And Saturday, at present at least, feels on a similar scale. As long as we go up and they go down as scheduled, it will be no more than an annoying little footnote in our history. (Also, we played okay, as we did in the cup game, so you can't ask for more.) Personally I am over it and looking forward to a derby with a serious & long-term local rival on Friday.

As per your final sentence, as long as we are promoted who cares. What have they got to look forward to!!!!????

This pretty much sums it up perfectly for me

Good post, Ric. Sorry Wurzel, I just can't get the nasty taste from my mouth.

I don't give a tinkers cuss about the Pompey game now. At the end of the season, the only thing they may have to make them feel better are two draws against Southampton. Two paltry points in a season of disaster. I will be quietly satisfied if their points total (ignoring the 10 point deduction) is still not enough to keep them up :)

We will get them in the FA Cup and League Cup next season. Both at Fratton, we will go there and batter their (mainly youth) team 10-0 on agg. Lambert will get all the goals playing in our reserve team. He wont get many chances in the first team due to the form of Messi and Kaka.

I look at it this way; our worst possible result from this season is staying in the NPC and being financially stable. Their best possible result from this season is staying in the NPC and being a financial mess.

It looks like we may get our best possible result (promotion) and they may get their worst possible result (relegation and liquidation).

Sort of puts it all into perspective really.
