Fan The Flames Posted 10 April, 2012 Share Posted 10 April, 2012 Rick Burrows moaning about the tax payer footing the bill for the policing away from the ground. Football fans are tax payers too and no mention of the police raising the costs through the enforced bubble. The benefit of having a top level club for the local economy must out weigh these costs. Kingsland Codger Posted 11 April, 2012 Share Posted 11 April, 2012 To hear all the interview go to the BBC Radio 4 Today programme page http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qj9z and click on the link to Listen Again 10/4/2102 and fast-forward to 1.50.40. The South Coast derby is the event chosen to highlight the issue of who should pay the policing costs. I love the bit around 1.54.05 where Jim Naughtie, the BBC interviewer, describes the Saints v Portsmouth match as 'fairly ordinary' and 'not especially high profile' and is put right in no uncertain terms by the Policeman. Naughtie is suitably contrite at the end of the exchange. I tend to agree with hamster above - will the Royal Family be charged for the necessary policing at the Diamond Jubille celebrations? Who will pay for the policing charges at the Olympics? At the upcoming Liverpool derby at Wembley? At pop concerts? ... As Fan the Flames says at the top of the thread, football fans are taxpayers, too. And for a bonus, the same programme has an interview with NA at around 1.25.40 (but it doesn't tell us very much new).
BARCELONASAINT Posted 11 April, 2012 Share Posted 11 April, 2012 I totally agree that football fans are tax payers too and why shouldnt the tax payer contribute towards the bill outside the ground. The local economy does benefit from the club being successful......However i think the agenda here is not really a moan about the football club and Joe public paying a tax bill......Personally i think the frustrations here are because Hampshire Police force like many others across the country are being forced to make savings that amount to £millions a year. Without getting political The service is being attacked at every corner. Like it or not and whatever your opinion is of our Police force it is still regarded as the best in the world. The frustrations of Mr Burrows are clear, this added policing bill is coming out of the budget for this year and all events like the Saints v Pompey game put an added financial burden on the Police force that they can ill afford. Hopefully some will understand its not about not wanting to provide a service to Hampshire taxpayers....its about being able to afford it!

They haven't got much chance of getting anything then as I've just read on BBC Sport that the Skates owe £58 million (£20 milliion more than when they went into administration.) teamsaint Posted 11 April, 2012 Share Posted 11 April, 2012 as tax payers, we are also fortunate in having to pay out for the blokes with machine guns who were hanging around waterloo on saturday.
Fan The Flames Posted 11 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 11 April, 2012 Personally i think the frustrations here are because Hampshire Police force like many others across the country are being forced to make savings that amount to £millions a year. Hopefully some will understand its not about not wanting to provide a service to Hampshire taxpayers....its about being able to afford it! I can understand the police wanting to get more income, however they have a long way to go to get their own house in order financially. My wife is a civilian in the Met and its amazing the amount that is wasted in over time costs alone. If my wife gets called in, bearing in mind she gets paid shift allowance to be on call, she will be paid her tavelling time and travelling costs, overtime is given to people to placate the staff, especially the girls the fuzz fancy, at year end it is used up when there is no work; so people are booking on for eight hours whilst only being in the office for one or two, people off sick in the week doing overtime at the weekend to catch up. I could go on, it's a disgraceful waste of tax payers money.
