Ewell Posted 9 April, 2012 Share Posted 9 April, 2012 We totally bossed it today and Hammond and Cork were outstanding. Those crying that we will struggle without Schneiderlin are wide of the mark, these two are well capable of getting us up. Before anyone goes mad I am not knocking Morgan I think he is a very good player. Cork has his best game for us today IMHO 2 wins and we are promoted, gotta love that! mitch01 Posted 9 April, 2012 Share Posted 9 April, 2012 Very strange you think Cork was that good, he gave the ball away cheaply several times and only ever looked to pass backwards. Granted, this was appropriate in the latter stages but I would hardly say he was our best player. Chaplow and Hammond played very well.

shurlock Posted 9 April, 2012 Share Posted 9 April, 2012 Palace made it very, very easy for us today - the gave us so much time and space. Their enforcer, Dikgacoi, was a non-entity. The skates game arguably helped us - the tempo, aggression and intensity of that game steeled us up and seemed to rub off on today's performance . DrunkenSaint Posted 9 April, 2012 Share Posted 9 April, 2012 Chaplow instead of Guly is a lot better also, we have more bite in the midfield, 4 ppl who tackle is a lot better than 3 ppl who tackle, just hope NA sticks with that side on friday. beatlesaint Posted 9 April, 2012 Share Posted 9 April, 2012 I think someone else pointed out on a different thread that Cork and Hammond were the central midfielders at the start of the season when we went off like a rocket. No coincidence me thinks. Good to see Chaplow back to form today too.

VectisSaint Posted 9 April, 2012 Share Posted 9 April, 2012 As I've said before, Chaplow - Hammond - Cork - Lallana is our best midfield. Morgan is still our best center mid, problem is that him and Hammond together does not work. Hammond is well suited to some games, where finesse is not the be all and end all, today was probably one of those games. We will need to strengthen in this area for next season though. Don't think there is too much to argue about with the 2 wide players (Lallana and Chappers), but again we will need to strengthen on both sides in future (on the right we can improve on Chappers, on the left we need to give AL competition, so Messi would be a decent option there). Agree about Scheiderlin but it is a team game and Cork and Hammond work better as a partnership and they both work better with Chaplow alongside. Ewell Posted 10 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 10 April, 2012 speaking to a guy, who used to play football at a decent level a good few years ago, before game today and his opinion was we played ok Saturday just got done by 2 once in a careeer strikes. made be feel even more confident about today and rest of season I watched the highlights from Saturday yesterday morning (could not bring myself to before) and your mate is spot on. We totally dominated the game and should have been 4-1 at half time. They were too very good strikes from Pompey in which KD had no chance with either. There is an argument both players should have been closed down quicker, particularly Norris. Very strange you think Cork was that good, he gave the ball away cheaply several times and only ever looked to pass backwards. Granted, this was appropriate in the latter stages but I would hardly say he was our best player. Chaplow and Hammond played very well. You must have been watching a different game to me mate. I did not see Cork give the ball away once although he may have on the odd occasion his passing stats yesterday will have been very high. I really don’t get why someone would be annoyed with a player passing the ball backwards or sideways keeping possession of the football so that it can then be worked into another opening possibly on the other side of the pitch. Cork only really started to do this towards the end of the game which was probably direct instructions from the coaching staff as the game was won. Just seen a lovely forward pass from Cork for Lamberts 2nd.
saintscottofthenortham Posted 10 April, 2012 Share Posted 10 April, 2012 Chaplow was back to the player we knew prior to his injury. Cork had his best game yet. Lallana caused problems. Deano was on another level. Not just the midfield, the whole side put in a top shift. Danny Fox was superb, as was Harding when he come on (I really, really don't rate him but he shut me up). Fonte and Hoover top notch.
JonnyLove Posted 10 April, 2012 Share Posted 10 April, 2012 Well it was a great display, however and I am never a negative man, it does seem that when put under pressure our midfield goes into hiding, this is what the skates did and what Reading, Leeds did last time out. So I expect Reading to be allot tougher than CP's team but it would be great if our boys stood up and said were not being bullied and played like we know they can. if that happens then bring it on. They are all in this together and it's getting closer to the Premiership! IMHO reaching the premier will be the end of the fun. I'm sure Norwich and Swansea fans said the same last year! The gap between the prem and the top of the championship is pretty small now, so there's no reason why we cannot make an impact as I'm sure we'll spend sensibly on the right players. QPR have failed because they've gone out and bought player after player after player, Norwich and Swansea have done well because they haven't. They've intelligently added to their squad but have not disrupted it.

ottery st mary Posted 10 April, 2012 Share Posted 10 April, 2012 (edited) As stated the combination of Chappers, Cork , Hammond and Lallana..when on their game is best suited for many games in this league....Morgan will become even more valuable to the team in the big boyzz league... I believe Hammond has done a tremendous amount of top notch stuff for the side in many different ways..especially as Captain on and off the pitch...When required to come into the side or selected from the off..he has always given his best and I for one salute his massive contribution which goes un noticed by some fans.. He is very unfairly criticised by one or two idiot who do not understand football or what has been going on with the coaching staff and the team/squad....and what has been required of him tactically.. Hammond had a very good game against Pompey and by all accounts man of the match against Palace.. Confirmed by various members of my family at the Palace game..and they are big fans of Morgan..but agree that Hammond and Cork have been a useful team/combination this season in many matches.. Morgan will be back and will continue to improve as he gains experience etc etc..Obviously we will need additions of quality in various positions including midfield......That Newcastle lad Ben would have been useful in our side:rolleyes: Well done Saints team/squad and staff..Well done NC and especially Nigel my favourite Manager now...You proved me wrong and many others......Liverpool will call you one day......or is it Everton:D COYS big game Friday and hopefully another 3 points.. Ian the Red Posted 10 April, 2012 Share Posted 10 April, 2012 Hammond had a great game, Chaplow the best for a while but still short of his best, Cork gave the ball away far too often and seemed to want one too many touches. He has not rediscovered his early season form and needs to now.
Sour Mash Posted 10 April, 2012 Share Posted 10 April, 2012 Good performance from midfield today, but take into consideration the opposition and the amount they pressed, couldn't have been more of a contrast to the skates game.
austsaint Posted 10 April, 2012 Share Posted 10 April, 2012 Great to read our midfield played so well against Palace. An in-form Chaplow really adds a spark to the side. Have we seen the last of Punch for the run in? He seems to have fallen completely out of favour; not even a place on the bench - I know he was well below par in his last two appearances but quite good before that in his "comeback". I hope he's still got a part to play at the club.

To be honest the player I particularly like is that other midfielder Carbeye (spellin ?) More suited to a Saints side than Ben Arfa.....not that we will ever get him.... Surprised you have not sent any talent towards Saints from France.. I always thought Pards was a good Manager and good luck to him.. To be fair to him.. he did put the foundation in place for NA to move it on up the league...s My guess is that he was being poached by Newcastle well before the departure at Saints...do not blame him really.. You do know I was pulling your leg about Morgan....Everyone knows he has the talent and after a few adjustments in some areas will be a star for us in top league..
