Saints v Reading build-up (the big one)

..

We have the skills to better Reading. Strong defence. Lallana, Cork and Hammond in midfield at their best. Lambert's intelligence alongside Sharp's bust foraging, running, collecting, and opportunistic in front of goal. Had Brighton these two in their team they would have thrashed Reading. Which is why we will win.

...

COYR!!!!

Ey! We want the lad concentrated on scoring goals, not foraging busts!

I reckon there is something wrong with the emotional make-up and depth of someone who has to characterise every bloody issue in life with statistics...

Well, given you probably know as little about human pyschology as you know about football, I think I can safely stay unperturbed by that remark

History always repeats itself so it will be 1-0 to Saints just as it was 52 years ago, and later results will prove that to be the goal that got us promotion just like Brian Clifton's long range header did then.

They brought in Gordon Brown from Derby, he was awful. Brian Clifton was brought in from the reserves, brilliant in the air and very solid on the ground but for some reason Ted didn't rate him. What a goal that was, I think he scored a few on the run in. Tall, strong, became a centre back and was captain at Grimsby for years. We've let some good players go through the years.

I think we are easily the best team in the league at home and it will take an exceptional performance to win here on Friday, WHU and Birmingham struggled, we have lost once in 15 games as have Reading. Their dead ball specialist Harte has won a lot of their games either scoring or delivering, they are no great shakes from play and I bet they won't be all out attacking on Friday. If DeRidder gets on he will tear Harte a new one if we give him the ball.

Hillarious.

You know f**k-all about football, hence your continual gimping about bookies odds in its discussion.

And the connection between love of all things mathetmatical, statistical, probable and a total lack of sociability and understanding of human psychology has long been well-established, so reading you lecture about this leaves me in tears of mirth....

Alpine accusing of someone else knowing **** all about football. Well if his knowledge of football was so vast, according to his ineptly inaccurate bedwetting predictions we would still be in league one last season and would have been barely scraping mid-table in the championships.

Lol, I was waiting for someone to spot the typo. It should have read 'bustling'. I can't change it, but I think it's funny enough to stay.

Whatever it takes to win!

you watch..we will lose, west ham will beat brighton and the wet fannies will be out in force

Don't you mean weeping assholes?

FWIW, I think hope we will tonk reading, and some combination of results means we are confirmed as promoted on saturday, whilst Portsmouth are confirmed as relegated. Brighton make the playoffs and lose out on promotion, and then West ham, pompey, and brighton fans hold a joint end of season pity party on a boat (17ft), alternately throwing up over their lack of success, and sucking their own dicks over what a massive club they are.

I appreciate you suffer from mental health problems (depression, I think you said).

You perhaps also suffer from innumeracy or just a fear of numbers? (unable to cope with 2 or 3 numbers in a paragraph). Certainly, last year, you made a range of assertions which literally don't add up.

I don't have a love of all things mathematical - although love a bet and thus requires a basic grasp of probabilities. You also wrong though that highly numerate people have the characteristics you suggest. Where has it been established?

I'd say my knowledge of football is somewhere above good-ish but a bit below excellent.

Certainly in terms of predicting what is likely to happen, which is a reasonably fair test of what you know about the game, I do pretty well and certainly make your record look truly dire (well, a chimp randomly typing numbers on a typewriter would have a fair chance of making your record look dire in fairness, so that's not my proudest ever boast!)

Tbh, I think Reading beating Brighton on Tuesday (no matte how unconvincing) has actually done us a favour.

hear me out on this one...

If Reading had dropped points (drawn or lost) then they would have been at least 2 points behind us, which would have removed some of the stress and pressure on us (both fans and players). however, as they won, we now know that this game is massive, and we shouldn't get complacent (ie Blackpool) and should perform better.

I do think, however, that even if we win, the title race isn't over, as I can easily see them winning their remaining 3 games

Okay, this is who I think we need to win (in bold).

Barnsley vs Cardiff - To try and cut Boro adrift of 6th place by the time we go there, so they have nothing to play for.

Brum vs Bristol City - Want Brum's playoff spot not being secure when Reading come to town on the last day (unlikely I know). Would all but send Pompey down.

Burnley vs Coventry - Want Coventry down by the last day.

Derby vs Boro - Same reason as Cardiff game.

Donny vs Pompey - Well obviously

Leeds vs Posh - Would help if Posh were mathematically safe on Tuesday. They're all but there, 9 point clear of drop zone.

Millwall vs Leicester - Need Leicester in the playoff hunt when Wham go to the Walkers.

Forest vs Blackpool - Again, same as Cardiff game.

Watford vs Hull - Hull go to Wham on the last day. If they were still in the playoff hunt, that would be good. Would also push them above Boro

West Ham vs Brighton - Obviously.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present Crystal Palace vs Ipswich. The only fixture this weekend we don't give a flying f**k about. :D

Reading seem confident, they are on a good run of form and most of their fans remember "dicking" us at their place, which they did until Hammond got sent off.

They also seem to think that if they stop Lambert from scoring, they've won, but they are forgetting Lallana who didn't play at Mad Stad

We also didn't have a poacher like Sharp in the side.

so, 10 men no sharp and no lallana and they could not beat us

My thoughts exactly. That game wasn't actually massive for us- in fact to add to your point, how demoralising was that game for WHU? They gave it a good go v Birmingham only to come up short, and see Reading ride their luck away from home against a decent side and win 0-1.

The view from Reading. They are all over the place on this one too - though most seem happy to settle for a draw, pushing us both a little closer to promotion.

lol, thats an interesting perspective. I note that one fan has us winning 3 - 1, with Guly scoring. I'm not sure NA will start him myself, Chappers did well on monday and he's the sort of terrier we need for this one.

I dont think I could take it if Reading beat us. At least 10 new supporters will appear at the office should they do so.

I know that feeling. I went to school in Reading and my last year at school was the year that they walked the Championship. After we returned from xmas break, everyone had ditched Chelsea/Spurs/Man U/Liverpool and was suddenly a Reading fan. They soon went crawling back into the woodwork.

A couple of Reading fans I know told me that they are going to sign Lallana in the summer for £4m. I just patted them on the shoulder and asked what time their carer was coming to help look after them.

Was not too optimistic on this one but starting to feel quite good about Friday. Yes Reading are on a run but that has to stutter some time - more likely than not against the team on the second best run.

They were all over us at Reading but that was without Lallana and (for the second half) Fonte. They struggled against Brighton and that will mean they are not so cocky. I think they fancy a draw will be enough for them to go on and finish the season in first place so I expect to see a lot of timewasting which Saits need to counter and not get frustrated by. Quick passing will be essential and lots of possession from us as there is nothnig more demorolising thatn chasing the ball all over the pitch without actually being able to touch it.

Despite the reservations expressed about the Lambo / Sharp partnership, I think the scorer / poacher role will start to blend well very soon - possibly Friday.

Yes, we will miss Morgan but the midfield was red hot on Monday and that was the best right side pairing we have seen for many months. The chemistry between them was excellent.

So 2-0 to Saints. quite confident now.

Just spoke to the old man in Blighty who said he was going to put a fiver on 5-1 Saints. I nearly choked on my stubby. So joined my Stokey odds compiler mate who resides in Gib in on the Skype call who guided the old man to William Hills who are offering 150-1. Dad couldn't get off the call quick enough. I think I might need to send my aunt round to check he hasn't knocked his head. The joys of getting old.

...hopefully he'll be proved right and have the last laugh.

The Royals fans seem quite relaxed about the game but with respect for our team - they just think that West Ham are going to bottle it (and they seem to have a dislike of KUMB that matches ours ;))...

http://hobnob.royals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=112742

I think everyone dislikes KUMB (and NSC) because of their "we'll win the league by 20 at xmas" attitude

I know there's no way of going back, but it does show the dangers of important games towards the end of the season not being played simultaneously.

Just suppose it was West Ham playing on Friday and us v Reading on Saturday. Any slip by West Ham could well encourage both teams to play out a bore draw.

Just convinced my local sports bar to show the match (after I discovered it is on a Russian channel) and have cancelled my last lesson to ensure I do not miss the kick-off!

Somehow, I feel more confident about this match than I did for the Skates one.

Come On You Saints!!!!!!!!!!!

That Reading forum has to be the most...normal footy forum I have ever seen. Hardly anyone on there posting utter bollards! Fair play to them :)

My experience of them is that thy are a pretty decent bunch of fans (did meet one dickhead after the MadStad game, but we all have a few of those). A Brighton mate who went Tues was similarly impressed - "they spent the whole game supporting their team, not having a go at us" (apparently Cardiff were the worst the other way).

I desperately want to win the league. Before that, I desperately want to be promoted. But I will be very happy for Reading, and Brian McDermott (the other most decent, humble manager in the division with NA), if they go up. But in 2nd place hopefully!

I think we will win but with a proviso. It is vital we do not concede cheap free kicks and corners because if we do Harte's pinpoint deliveries will hurt us. Hope Nige will be impressing this point on the players - the coaching staff are so thorough that I think that's a given.

Lambert was deadly with free kicks last season. From how many free kicks has he scored directly this season? Can't remember the last one he got. Feels like we're due one on Friday.

Season before last he scored a lot, last season nowhere near so many and this season perhaps 1 deflected goal but I'm none too sure on that.

Its a battle between Fox and Harte whoever puts in the best corners / free kicks will win, unless they are both bad then it's a draw.

Fox - who has generally been doing well - hasn't shown great delivery in last couple of games.

Completely agree that limiting Harte's set pieces in vital.

See Mike Dean is the referee - nice to have one of the higher profile PL list for this game. Just hope he's better than that crunt we had against the skates.

Reading gave away a lot of free kicks and were lucky (by the sound of it...I wasn't there) not to have been further punished at Brighton...I'd like us to pressurise them from the start...they must be cream-crackered after Tuesday and are (hopefully) more likely to make the mistakes that tired teams make.

Afternoon all,

I know the user name doesn't give it away but I'm a Reading fan, in peace.

If you offered me the draw now I would snap your hand off. We looked very suspect against Brighton with our usual centre midfield pairing missing.

You are quite right to be concerned about Harte, his delivery just begs for someone to stick their head on it and has been one of our most valuable assets during our recent run.

It will also be interesting to see how you handle Roberts, he is proving a real handful for most defences whilst also bringing the best out of Noel Hunt.

And then there is Jimmy Kebe. I can't tell you whether he will be a match winner or just excess baggage, you just never know which Kebe will show up.

With the talent you also have at your disposal it's sure to be a great game.

How do you rate Leigertwood's chances? What's a Mullens/McAnuff midfield like? Thought midfield was where you bossed us last time we met.

Your defense seems pretty watertight, though it does seem to bit vulnerable to pace

I was quietly confident till I read that, Mike Dean is a grade A ****. Sort of obnoxious ref who thinks the game is all about him.
