Saints v Reading build-up (the big one)

In the history of this football club there have been some great moments. 5-1 away to Man City in the FA cup in 1960. 7-1 home win against Ipswich in the FA cup in 1961, the year Ipswich got promoted from Div2 and the year before they won the Div1 championship. 6-3 against Man U in the Prem in 1996. A 3-0 win against Reading to make the Championship title all but certain would rank with the best.

Would take a draw now, a win would be fantastic, a defeat would be depressing.

Would take a draw but only if WHU draw too. Win would be the result of the season. Be interesting to see how Reading get on tonight. If they win then I think we'll do them on Friday. A draw or defeat and I think it'll be a different story.

Will be difficult. Lambert got nothing out of Pearce and Gorkks at their place, so we're going to have to be less predictable in how we attack them. We've also looked a bit wobbly against setpieces (recently) and width (a longer-term problem) -and Reading excel from both.

Shame Schneiderlin is out - reckon he would have done a great job picking up Hunt like he did against Koren.

1-0 against Man Utd in the FA Cup Final in 1976 was probably worth a mention here. Hope that helps.

think they will go for a win whether we dominate from start or not

might depend on where they are with Tabb,if he's still out on Friday as well as Karacan that would leave them with Leigertwood and Robson-Kanu in CM unless they have a pack shuffling.Don't know how they'd fair against us with that might depend on which Cork turns up.

I think we may lose against Reading, which would dent but certainly not kill off our promotion hopes. See no reason why we can't beat Posh and Cov (and keep our GD intact), job done.

I hate to say it but I can't wait until this season's over. It's all I can think about!

my point it is that the post i was replying to is stupid

does anyone believe Reading will not try to win, however we start or finish

we just have to beat them in allaspects of the game

There are a lot of fragile characters on here. This is a battle hardened team and Reading for all their form are up against it, I wouldn't like to be any team that has to come here and get anything. Anybody remember all the must win games last year, Huddersfield?

Reading might well be a team of zombies by Friday, depends on just how much of a going over Brighton give them this evening.

If Reading lose tonight and get more injuries or those that they already have get aggravated then I think that they might well struggle to stay ahead of West Ham.

They've got some injury knocks at the wrong time.

They're without Karacan for sure, but Leigertwood and Harte are also carrying knocks - doubts for tonight.

Also Robson-Kanu pulled a muscle late on in the Leeds game according to one of their fans.

That's their central midfield just ripped out pretty much.

Jos is going to score. Heard it here first.

Jos could actually be well into double-figures by now. It has been great to see him scoring after years of Claus's up-and-back futility, bless his cotton socks, but Jos has missed as many easy chances as he's converted. Imagine that - a central defender with 10-12 goals to his name!

I always really fancy us at corners because there are just too many goal threats to be marked. Sharp's goal against Donny was an example of a team running out of markers - damn near the shortest guy on the pitch scores with a header.

NEED TO WIN THIS ONE BIG TIME (IMHO) ... Go in for the kill as early as possible knowing how Reading thrive on late goals of late ... Stuff them senseless with a 3-0 scoreline by half time !!!! ... Might them knock the wind out of their sails for the rest of the season !!!

Grow some balls people. We can beat Reading. It'll be a tough game, but on our day we're the better side. I'm going for 2-1.

If they turn us over, they'll deserve to win the league having already won at West Ham and Brighton in the last two weeks. Still think we'll go up whatever the result on Friday.

Simples.

This game is such a great setup, probably the best choice of a live champ match Sky have made for ages - It means so much for both sides.

We're a big game team though, with big game players. Reading should be worried, and by the ease Brighton took them apart tonight then we have to be confident.

Hopefully they've used all their luck up tonight.

Not done and dusted yet. Lose against Reading and WHU could be just 3 points behind with 3 to play. Tonight's result changes nothing much in that regard.

Shouldn't matter though 'cos I'm expecting a 100% Saints end to the season with 12 more points coming our way.

This is the biggest game we've played since Sheff Utd a few years ago. Can we win, if we play like we can, yes.

Anything below par and we'll get beat. They are on a right roll.

However, I think if we win, the league title may not be over, but if they win, it will be.

The players have to believe. Win on Friday and West Ham lose to Brighton (it's possible) then we are as good as up. The pressure would be off as we go for the title. This is the most important 90 minutes of their careers so far.

think the players do believe it is the 6000 JCL's at SMS who worry me

I'd rather have a wet fanny than a dried up, crusty, octogenarian fanny like you, any day.

I can see the reading game being 1-1

both inch that little bit closer to promotion

also, I'm sure billy sharp has scored the same amount as jason roberts in fewer games...?

Tweet this am.

Jacqui Oatley ‏ @JacquiOatley Had a very strange dream that Andy Townsend and @theMichaelOwen scored late goals for Southampton to secure promotion. #SaintsFC

Can we get them on emergency loans?

Townsend has a better chance of being fit than Owen.

4 games left. 12 points available. West Ham 6 points behind. If we win on Friday then we are almost 99.99% certain (as we have a nice goal difference) to be promoted. (all bar the maths). Lose and well not too bad if West Ham F-up on Saturday (again if we win and they do F-up Saturday then we are up anyway).

No pressure then lads.

All I think we can do is play the waiting game, keep the ball and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike. Keep it calm and easy, no stupid flash crap. It might not be pretty but it's what we had to do last year to get promoted and it works.

Keep the same team as against palace, possibly punch on the bench instead of Gully.

I'm going for 1-0 Saints but it will be a slow hard 1-0.

As supporters we just need to not be on the players back and create a calm relaxed vibrant atmosphere (unlike Pompey you could cut it with a knife as the anticipation of knowing we could fk-it-up was felt around the ground).

So come on saints you can do it make this weekend memorable as well I'm not working so want to get out and get totally ******ed and for a good reason. :)
