Saints / Reading / West Ham run in: Games to go . . .

The difference so far this season has been the results against eachother.

Reading earned 4 from Southampton & 6 from West Ham

Southampton earned 1 from Reading & 4 from West Ham

West Ham 0 from Reading & 1 from Southampton

Reading 3 pts clear of us (having earned 3 more points from us than we have them) and 6 clear of West Ham (earned 6 more from them).

We are 3 pts behind Reading (having earned 3 less from them ) and 3 clear of West Ham (earned 3 more from them)

West Ham 6 behind Reading and 3 behind us.

I know this isn't the only reason but shows the difference..

Interesting scenario:

Both Saints and WHU win tomorrow.

WHU draw at Leicester. Saints in the late kick off are 2 ahead with a game in hand.

Would we go all out for a win to secure it, or take a draw knowing that then avoiding defeat on the last day would be enough?

Actually pretty plausible the more I think about it. I would take a draw under those circumstances, we should beat Coventry.

The only problem being that Leicester v West Ham is on Monday night...

I think the WHU/Leicester game is a monday night TV game.

As long as we beat Posh a draw at Boro is perfectly acceptable as we then go into the last day with it firmly ours to lose.

I think that WHU game has fallen really nicley for us in many ways, if it was the other way round we could go into the Boro game out of the top 2 but now as long as we do the biz against Posh, we'll be fine.

Published odds now give us a 72% probability of automatic by at least a clear point - down from 89% before the weekend but still good if you consider WHU's probability of being clear of Saints is only 20%.

Bit concerning that the probability of finishing level on points has gone up to 8%, and we can't be sure any more that we'll have the better GD.

But the important thing is it's still in oiur own hands. Every time we can match or beat Hammers results, things can only get better. COYR!

One of them being the extra rest and preparation time for the final game, which shouldn't be under-estimated at this stage.

Whilst I hope we're home and dry before the final game I believe we'll lose at Boro, Wet Spam will beat Leicester, and we'll go into the final game needing the win to go up.

It is very possible that Boro will not have anything to play for when we kick off - Cardiff/Leeds, Blackpool/Burnley, Brighton/Brum may all have gone the wrong way for them. They failed to beat an already relegated side at home tonight, we know a win will get us there and will be up for it with no pressure of a West Ham score to look out for.

Even if it goes to the final game, the Bristol/Barnsley game may well have accounted for Coventry by then.

As Strachan would say, begone, negative thinking man!!

Was discussing that Boro situation with my mate earlier. Imagine how you'd feel 30 minutes before kickoff if you discovered you couldn't make the playoffs and you're season was over! We'll convincingly beat them if that's the case.

Exactly - they'll go through the motions, we'll go though the gears, job done.

Interesting (or not as the case may be) that there are several realistic scenarios that would leave nothing* to be decided on the final day. If Reading do better than us this coming weekend they would be guaranteed to be champions, if west ham do the same, or worse than us we would be promoted. The gap below the teams in the playoff spots could easily be 4 or more and both pompey and coventry could well join relegated donny.

(* I guess the only thing almost certain to be still up for grabs is the order of the teams in the playoff spots, even then it could just be who is 5th and who is 6th)

Was thinking about this. I wouldn't put it past their manager to ban radios, phones etc to keep his players from knowing the scores of the other games. So those of you that are at the match might just mention (loudly) the pointlessness of them winning to their players ...even if it isn't true!

While to our advantage this time, it annoys me games are at different times like this at this stage of the season. It's harsh on WH they play Monday rather than having the chance to pressure us on the Saturday. Also, why did Reading kick off at 8pm last night? I notice they scored their winner shortly after the crowd found out West Ham had drawn and a win would promote them. There was a big crowd reaction from it. Ok, no-one knows if it made the difference, but they were struggling to score before that and it could have given them a boost. Why advantage for any side at this stage?
Agree. It might even affect how we play. If Reading get anything but a win, we might just go for it a little bit more. Perhaps. And yes, I know a win doesn't make them champions. Edited by Webby

Also once the other results came in Forest were also safe from relegation no matter what the result so didn't have to worry about losing.

We'll go up no problem, last night saw to that.

Only issue is when we go up. Wins for Cardiff and Blackpool, will mean Boro will chuck the towell in and even if they dont, I still think we can get a win up there. If not it'll be Cov game, no way will Bristol C **** up against Barnsley, so they'll already be down. My gut feeling will be draw Sat, win against Cov.

There's a lot of assumption that West Ham will win their fnal two games.

I'm not entirely sure they will.

. It is indeed assumption as is any prediction but something says they will win both and put the pressure on us

The way we prepare for games there is no chance that any thought will be given to Hammers dropping points. We control the controllables, set out to win both games.

And if we win Sat, they can't put any pressure on us because we'll be up before they play.

Spot on. Now lottery. Numbers for Saturday please!

F*ck, I really should have stuck some money on that! I've got an accy on for Saturday though:

NEWCASTLE vs Stoke

READING vs Palace

Middlesbrough vs SAINTS

CHARLTON vs Wycombe

SHEFF WED vs Carlisle

Don't need to be a genius to figure that one out. 12/1 odds on it though. Get on it mate! ;)

Looks like they've given up going by this brilliant West Ham fan site (second and third blogs) http://thegamesgonecrazy.blogspot.co.uk/

Brilliant:

Talking after an epic 1-1 draw at Bristol City which has as good as secured third place for West Ham, Doctor Evil was full of praise for his team:

"We only conceded one goal away from home and you have to be satisfied with that. It's a shame Rob Green was found wanting when the pressure was on but it's not just Rob, individual mistakes have cost us all season."

"Of course there will be the usual ******** about my tactics. The important thing was not to lose tonight. There will be more ******** about 4-4-2 and about playing Vaz Te up front but just because Vaz scored a hat trick on Saturday, it doesn't mean he will score if played in an advanced role in the next game. He didn't score when I moved him forward in the second half did he?"

"And there will be the usual Baldock ******** too. I had John Carew on the bench and he is a Norwegian international. Baldock is a good kid but you don't need kids at the business end of the season, you need experience. That's why Morrison hasn't featured."

"We are safely in third and you have to be pleased with that. Peterborough let us down badly tonight and I'm angry about that. Had they beaten Southampton it would have been all to play for. Bristol City is a difficult place to come to. They are fourth from bottom remember, they're not a bottom three team. But you would expect Peterborough to do better against Southampton. We looked at that game and thought Southampton might struggle. Peterborough's performance has to be seen as very disappointing therefore. I feel very badly let down and I will on the blower to Peterborough to let them know how I feel."

"But let's not forget this team finished bottom last season and we are third now. You have to be pleased with that. Bottom to third represents great progress. It's been a fabulous season when you take everything into account and I have done a brilliant job when all things are considered. Rob Green let me down today just like he let me down against Cardiff in the first game of the season. That's five crucial points Rob has cost me. I'll talk to Rob about that and I'm sure he will apologise."

Isn't the point of somebody posting a link to prevent having to cut-n-paste the entire text into the post? Just asking.

Just thought that this, in particular, deserved more attention than it got. Thanks for replying to me, now its there twice. :)

As long as we've done our job and they can't overtake us, it'll be pretty relaxing viewing.

Win tomorrow for us and we can laugh all the way through that game, while still routing for Leicester out of spite. :-D
