Guly

The Guly debate is a simple one for me.

We are all entitled to our opinion, but unless you are managing a professional football team at an equal, or higher, level than Mr Adkins, then you have to concede that he knows more about football than you or I.

He has also lead this side to promotion in his first year, and with 5 games to go, the team tops the second tier of English football, so let's just summarise that he is doing something right.

To insist that Guly needs never to play again, is clearly an opposing viewpoint from that of our manager.

So, it is a question of who would you trust more, Nigel Adkins, or your own opinion?

Personally, I'll let the management structure decide, and i'll stick to what I'm good at, drinking beer and shouting from the terraces.

Common sense post.

Good post except for the final sentence...

I have noticed you dribble when drinking your beer..very wasteful:p

You are shouting at games but not necessarily in all of the right places at the right times;)

Yes...I am an expert at drinking beer and shouting from the terraces:smug:

Come on Nigel 3 points please:)

I somehow doubt it. Facts count for nothing when you have a vendetta.

Yeah players who Saints fans hated

Guly

Puncheon

Rasiak

J Wright

Alan Ball

Francis Benali (in his early years)

Mark Hughes

Jimmy Case

Kevin Curran

An endless list and no doubt many many more from my being away years.

And of course the current one - stop nancying about with this fancy passing bollix get rid of it...

Saints fans are not complete unless they can moan

What we need is someone with access to opta stats (or whatever system we use).....

That should shut a few up I would imagine

There are some stats on the FL website. Same number of league goals as Lallana, similar number of assists, similar number of shots. He figures reasonably highly in the Actim rankings. But I suspect facts don't make a jot of difference to those that have closed their minds to Guly.

A few things that have disappointed me about Guly. There is no doubt his form has dipped in the last few months. I watched him carefully on Saturday and his body language was all wrong. His head was down a lot and at times he just did not look up for it! It seems to me he sees himself as an out and out striker and is uncomfortable out on the right. Maybe he sees Lee and Sharp ahead of him in the central position and that is affecting his moral. One for the Manager to sort out I think.

What disappoints me more however is a witch hunt by some slagging him off as useless. This guy had scored 10 league goals this season and 7 assists. This hardly makes him useless.

Get off his back and let the Manager decide if he is good enough to play from the start.

I agree. Being booed by you own fans, the fans he said made him feel settled after he signed, hardly breeds confidence.

He did look like he was close to tears a few times but maybe that's his natural expression?

It is for me when I'm at work.

Yes I cannot understand that seeing we are top of the league when I go to the games I encourage all our players and want us back in the premier league

Not sure why some of our fans think it worthwhile to get on a player's back. Guly seems to be the scapegoat du jour for some reason. Yeah, it can sometimes be frustrating when someone's having a bit of a 'mare but maybe a bit of encouragement might work better than constant abuse.

Anyway, he's on the bench today so the haters get their wish. Let's hope Chappers can find some of that early form today before he gets it in the neck.

Like it - play Guly at left back!

Are you George Burley? ;)

As for Guly, when he isn't doing anything useful like scoring or assisting he looks useless and looks like he isn't interested. He reminds me of Rasiak in the way that in 88 of the 90 mins he looks lazy and disinterested for the other two minutes he is also creating something or scoring. Even when Guly plays badly he still has the odd moment of brilliance, against Blackpool everyone was slating yet he could on another day have scored/assisted a total of 3 goals.

Looked like he refused to applaud the fans at the end today too -Adkins tried to pull him back but headed straight for the tunnel!

Just the way to win over the fans Guly!! A sour note on a top banana day :)

Yes, the ungrateful bastard! After the way the fans have welcomed him with open arms.

There is always a player who is a scapegoat for the fans. Even KD was at one stage (although now the sun shines out of his arse, obviously) just as there are ropey players who can do no wrong (at least for a bit anyway, e.g. Skacel). FWIW i think it is unfair to target Guly, perhaps the fans wanted to keep hold of Papa Waigo and Guly was seen an a cheap replacement from the Don, but he's not a bad player and when his confidence is up, he can influence a lot in a game.

Really? I wonder if any of the entrenched anti-Guly brigade were joining in this afternoon.

I think more people need to realise that whilst some entrenched anti-guly supporters do exist, they are just a minority and most just find guly frustrating and believe him to not be good enough.

Adkins has just emphasised how great our support was today and the impact it had on team.

Likewise, jeering players also has an impact but obviously in a more negative way. It is not helping the particular individuals or team by doing this.

My point is that we now have 4 games to go with destiny in our own hands so lets get behind the team and all the players including Guly. We can help push the team over that line.

What you fail to understand is that while to many of us mere football fans he appears to be uninterested and has been doing next to nothing for us for months on end, I have it on very good authority (because I read it on here) that the true card carrying GDL connoisseur of the finer points of the game can see all kinds of subtle influences he's having on team performance make the team 'tick' in a mysterious and not fully explained way.

Oh and he scored some goals and made some assists before Xmas you know ....... I may be the first person to point that out.

This is important now lads. Every player needs our support 100% for the next four games. They've all got us where we are now, sometimes having great games and sometimes poor ones but from now on in nothing less than total support will do. We can save the critical discussions for the close season.

Oh FFS! It is quite simple. I find the mindless blanket condemnation of ANY Saints player to be pathetic. It doesn`t matter whether it is Guly (who just happens to be the current holder of the Pantomime Villain Award) or anyone else. People whose only argument is "XYZ is ****" no matter what they do are not worth listening to. As somebody else said, I trust the football judgement of NA over most of the cement-heads on here who believe themselves to be the founts of all football knowledge.

When he was subbed for De Ridder, the "Steve" chants sounded like boos to me. Perhaps he thought he was being booed off?

Against Pompey that seemed the case, Also he would hear the vocal minority when at RM close to the touchline telling him to "feck off."

I just wonder, how long is left on his contract? Perhaps he's already heard he won't be here next season or has already put in a transfer request?

Are there any sort of "promotion to the prem league" bonuses in the players contracts? Will some players get less than others.

This is just another tired old variation on what I call the 'Mother Knows Best' argument - only paid professionals are entitled to express their opinions regarding the game because they (unlike the rest of us) are best placed to know. Of course the bloody manager should pick the team you utter 'cement headed' berk - but why you think that should stop ordinary footy fans from having their say about their club is quite beyond me.

I don't know about you but I pay my fiver on here every year so that I can express what I think about SFC related matters and debate that with other like minded fans. Perhaps you'd benefit from consulting a dictionary and obtaining a better grip on the meaning of the word 'Forum' before lecturing me again on what I can, and cannot, say on here.

Right or wrong I have always called it as I see it, and I intend to continue with that policy for the foreseeable future. You can take that, leave that, or go stick your head in a bucket for all I care - but I'm not going to change.

Very few people get motivated by boots up the backside and baracking from the sidelines. I thought we already knew that Guly was motivated by encouragement. I'm quite sure that his less than fantastic performance lately is more related to the treatment he is receiving from those who ought to know better. Look yourself in the mirror and ask if you're proud of behaving in this way.

I am somewhat encouraged to realise that I'm not alone, but hearing the bile from behind me in the Kingsland makes me cringe. It's 95% Guly, but on Saturday NA became "you black suited tw*t". I suppose that tells a lot about the judgements which are being exercised.

Is continually saying "Guly (or any other player) is ****" an opinion or just blind dislike? If I said MLT was a fat useless lazy bastard who did nothing for the team, would you happily accept that as a valid opinion that I am entitled to hold or would you lambast me for being a ******. I personally believe in complimenting a player when he does well and critisicise him when he does badly... but hey, thats me - I`m not going to change

I'll take it thanks - that is exactly what we all should do. Call it as we see it.

Today he looked a bit more lively, should have scored.
