Saints 2-2 Pompey - Reactions

Which teams fans are chuffed tonight because they threw a spanner in the works of the promotion campaign of hated rivals, knowing they themselves are a bustedflush set for relegation at best ?

Which teams fans are f*cked off and feeling like the world might end ?

Yep. We might as well have lost today, it certainly feels like it.

Don't be stupid. A point is a point, there are still bound to be twists and turns on the way plus at the worst a guaranteed play off place !

Did it even need a dink? Couldn't he just have driven it early rather than running with the ball and making the angle tighter. From the other side of the ground, it didn't seem he needed to be so elaborate.

No,credit to Ashdown he has the shot pretty well covered (thought he played well today). To me it's either a dink or a drag back

and shot but that might put him on his wrong foot. Can't remember where the nearest defender was.

Feel like we lost today, anyone else feel the same.

Not really, didn't like what I saw though, more worried about the 5 remaining games than only drawing today.Thought our midfield was totally useless,no invention,no bite,no vision...then again everybody knows I think Hammond is a waste of space and Cork is a bit of a ballerina sometimes..

Great game. Shame about the result but probably fair on balance. Skates we dirty cheating bastards and ended up bringing us down to their level. Credit to their fans though- better behaved than some of ours in the chapel itched corner.

Very disappointing performance again today, poor defending (5 goals in 2 games), ineffective midfield, and poor finishing. Reading and West Ham now playing like promotion candidates, not us , so must win on Monday and hope the others drop points.

What a time of the season to be playing badly however we are still in with a shout.

Like the skates wouldn't have invaded if there weren't 400 stewards and police all round them.

Over the two games we've played the Skates this season, we've never been behind and we're been ahead three times. They had to score two wonder goals to stay with us. People are staying we didn't deserve to win - I disagree. Which keeper had the most saves to make? Who had the most shots? They've got out of jail twice against us. I know it feels like two points dropped, and it's frustrating, but we're still top, they're still at the bottom.

Would anyone like to change places? Thought not ;-)

Was gutted at the final whistle, felt like a loss. However, win against palace and I think it will have been a decent weekend.

Morgan going off was a blow, we never took control of the game in the middle. We still made some really good chances though and on another day would have been 3 or 4.

Didn't think we defended well enough down the flanks which is so often the case with us. That was the only threat they had.

Hammond huffed and puffed like the good league one player he is. Cork was by far motm for his drive, tackling and attempting to pass the ball. We played more long/direct balls than west ham on a bad day, BUT had enough GOOD chances to put the game to bed. Gutted. Feels like a defeat but we can win at palace.

Surprised that we tried to play the long ball so much today.

As long as we don't fall to pieces I feel we will go up,game against Reading will decide who wins the league IMO,the way we have played lately we seem to of lost our swagger.

We are due to give someone a hiding I feel, let's start with palace on monday

Have to say we had the chances, despite all the cynical play from the skates. Three brilliant saves from Ashdown kept them in it. One question to be answered - with five players in midfield who the f**k was supposed to be marking Norris?

A point was probably a fair result, gutting as it is. Lambert, injured or not, is a terrific asset up front. He won just about everything in the air, exactly what didn't happen at Blackpool (and what a dump THAT place is!). We really struggled for creativity today but should have punished the skates in the second half when they were clearly tiring, but we just didn't have the quality to put them to bed (urrrgh).

Morgan but as he'd been in the dugout for 90 minutes by then Norris got a free shot.

Gutted. Waited 7 years for us to turn the tables on them and we go and **** it up in the last minute. A point may have been about right, but we had the game won and let is slip, again. Why didn't we bring Martin on instead of Harding? Was it handball from Kitson from the long ball that led to the Norris goal? It matters not, its gone, we had our chance and now we'll just need to concentrate on not ****ing up the promotion.

Yet again we played poorly, hit it long a lot and were second best in midfield too often. I thought Varney, who looked some player, caused us real problems, but other than that they didn't have a lot. We didn't take our chances and only Lallana knows why he didn't shoot rather than try to go round the keeper.

Davis 7 one decent save and kicked well

Richardson 6 got caught the wrong side of Varney several times, far better than Butterfield last week mind, but his positional play wasn't the best. Like how he gets forward, but it never seems to click with de Ridder

Fox 6 solid enough, but how many long balls to no and terrible set pieces?

Fonte 7 looked a little nervous at the start but a decent game. Had to win that header at the end and we'd of on, but won many others throughout

Jos 7 strong all game, but long balls were terrible

Guly 5 Hate how the fans were singing for de Ridder, embarrassed by that, but he didn't have a great game, to be far he didn't see the ball because we bypassed midfield

Hammond 6 excellent first half, disappeared in the second

Morgan looked a bad knock, sounds like he is out for next few games minimum.

Cork 7 worked his socks off, but in possession he took too long. Really got stuck in and there was some niggle with Allan, not seen that nasty side of Cork. Want to see more of it.

Lallana 6 Embarrassed by his dive, thought he went down early twice early on as well. Should have scored. Not enough from him, but again we bypassed midfield so often

Lambert 7 clearly not fit, looked heavy. Won loads of headers but not sharp enough on the ball

Sharp 7 so happy he got his goals, why on earth he was yellow carded for the first celebration is beyond me, but all round play was poor, the ball didn't stick ever and he put no pressure on defenders either. Ball seems to bounced over him all the time.

de Ridder 6 never saw the ball, we just don't feed him enough, but when he got his chance he fluffed it

Harding not on long

Oh how did Allan not get booked for that first kick from behind. He'd of been off as he got a yellow later.

We were poor today, mainly because the whole team were poor with the exception of Ricky and Guly, who were crap. Billy scored two very good goals and in that match showed us what he is all about, a goal poacher who brings little else to the game. I was disappointed we got caught up in the derby atmosphere and forgot to play football for times, with the ball just bouncing about from player to player. It's criminal to go defensive for the final few minutes then allow Norris to score. We never played the clock down very well at all.

Who was meant to be our main striker out there today and how did we support him? If you are expecting Billy to get goals you will need to put someone up front to battle and create the chances because when you are flicking on headers from so far back, you still have too much work to do to create the opening. Most of our success has come from a pass and move game without what I would call a recognised #9. We've seen the wheels come off before and they are off again with our style of play, because the players are not good enough at the present. As difficult as it was, we failed when we never bought a plan B in the January window. Billy does not suit our style of play and it shows, the alternative is to go more defensive and hope Billy nicks you a goal. Because flicking on headers for Billy from so far back is not going to give you an open scoring opportunity, there is still to much work to be done.

We spent a lot of energy in chasing 50/50 balls just to create further 50/50 balls and I doubt will have little in the tank for Palace or any reward, bearing in mind our current playing form. Then we have to try and get something out of the Reading game

meh

Bring on Palace.

They will hit a thousand shots in training like the two they made today and none of them will go in.

Watched Lallana's 1 in a thousand shot - it was going in, bounc3ed and turned as much as a Graham Swann delivery.

It happens. Losing Morgan was the blow.

They still cheat, they are still a bunch of dirty nasty thugs.

We got a point and they'll be gone in 5 weeks

feels like we have lost at home to them.

atmosphere - good at start but faded. their fans made a lot of noise mid second half.

sadly they have the bragging rights.

agree with first two points

but living here in border country no way have they bragging rights

we are still top they are being cut a drift

never admit they have bragging rights

I was directly behind the shot for Pompey's first goal. I think Kelvin thought it was going wide as he seemed to pull his arm out of the way. A surprising error of judgement from a normally reliable keeper.

A question that's puzzled me for probably three or so months. Why have we progressively reverted to the long ball game? We were bereft of both ideas and imagination today and demonstrated this by constantly bypassing the midfield with long balls. Presumably this demonstrates some sort of evolution in Nigel's tactical thinking but I'm left baffled. Could it be that Chaplow was essential for this to work and we changed our system during his injury?

Adam has come in for some criticism but he ran his socks off today and worked exceptionally hard. I'll be amazed if he lasts another 90 minutes on Monday I thought Jack also played well. Normally a Guly fan but he contributed little today. He definitely works better playing with Rickie in the centre but I suppose now we've splashed out on Billy it's unlikely that Nigel will play him there.

Hey ho I know it's only a game but it would be depressing to falter at the last hurdle. However we still control our own destiny and hopefully Nigel can demonstrate his motivational skills over the remaining games.

I too thought that Kelvin should have done better for their first goal. He seemed surprised by it. I'm normally a supporter of Guly but he was a spectator today, especially when he stood and watched McGuire take his shot. What on earth was Adkins thinking when he sent Harding on in stoppage time? It wasn't football out there today.

Typical Saints making a hard job of the run in, but what do you expect when our star players are more concentrated on tweeting on Twitter than putting full concentration on gaining results and promotion. Slip sliding Away keeps running thru my head non stop.

Thoroughly agree that taking off Sharp was a really bad substitution that lost the momentum and gifted them with their equaliser.

Felling sick, sick, really sick

Still cant believe it. Did anyone else feel like time stood still when their 2nd went in... and then even after it went in still not being able to believe it had happened, i was just waiting for the ref to blow for something! Everyone around me was just speechless... heartbreaking. Oh well win at palace and all will be ok, loose and its proper squeeky bum time

I didn't think we were that bad today. We cannot play our natural game against a team who come to play a game Norman Hunter and Billy Bremner would be proud of...

Losing Morgan was a blow. Lambert was nowhere near fit and although he won everything in the air (when not being fouled) his link up play was awful - no mobility at all. Sharp showed why we bought him.

Credit to Pompey. They worked tirelessly and created very little, had a keeper in inpsired form (we didn't - thought Kelvin could and maybe should have saved both) and managed to score from only two shots on goal. Both of which would have gone into row Z on another day.

I'm stunned and a bit surprised by the gnashing, wailing and GUTLESS fans on here whinging about it.

There are five games to go. We are top. Now is the time for men to stand up, get behind the side and be counted. If you are not enjoying this, you need a one way ticket to Dignitas.

Nothing in life worth having was not also HARD WORK.

Cannot wait for Dellhurst Park on Monday.

right, home now and had time to reflect

the officials were terrible...not just for saints but for the flow of the game..at times they just guessed who to give a throw to.

they were dirty bustards from the off.

Cork was MoM for me..ran his heart out, won the ball countless times and kept things ticking over

lambert, clearly not fully fit but he won almost every header, you could see he was getting well fuked off for not getting any fouls

lallana was brilliant at times and then when he had a chance to shoot, decided to try and take it round the keeper at a stupid angle.

their keeper made 3-4 great saves....dont recall kelvin making many

sharp was a proper predator in the box

GULY WAS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE

richardson was great considering for over an hour, he had to plug the right side on his own

hammond was pretty anonymous IMO

their goals were outstanding bits of individual skills...it took me about 2-3 seconds to realise macguire had scored....what a goal

as for their equaliser, it was as if time stood still and it all happened in slow motion....

anyone tell me why sharp was booked for celebrating this time...?

anyway, we should have won, we had the chances to win...but we got a point and one more closer to promotion...4 points ahead of west ham with 5 games to go

amazing atmosphere

On the balance of play and chances created we deserved to win. We didn't win because having gone 2-1 up so late in the game all we had to do was keep possession, something we can do well, instead of which we presented them with the opportunity to score from let's face it, what was a good strike. As good a strike as it was, without the ball they don't get the opportunity. I thought throughout the match Saints were far too hasty and rushed in their play, by-passing midfield and not getting the creative players on the ball nearly enough in the right positions.

At the end of the day they can have their little bit of pant wetting excitement because a point is of more use to us than to them. No derby distractions from now on and all eyes on the prize.

It was a derby, normal rules do not come into play.

the side they put out is strong and they had the rub of the green.

I am sick of not seeing any pace in the side and we do not leave defenders for dead.the loss off Lee is most unfortunate as he seemed to bring a zip into our side. Adkins should have played Puncheon last week at Blackpool where he would have gone back to his old club, and Chaplow today as his zip and aggression would have helped, as for putting a defender on in the last few minutes!
