Lighthouse Posted 7 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 7 April, 2012 Okay, now I've calmed down a bit that was probably a fair result based on that game. Pompey played absolutely out of their skins and scored 2 crackers, even if both were terribly marked. They don't, can't and won't play anywhere near that tempo every week. Teams always raise their game for a local derby, this was never going to be one sided. We are still top. Aside from the hows and the whys, we are top and have a 5 game season with a 4 point head start. We can still do this. We were crap at Blackpool and local derbies are always a lottery. Lambert didn't look fit, but we have Sharp in amonst the goals and I think those 2 and Barnard have enough in them to win games.

.comsaint Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 Watched the whole game on a good live stream. Gutted that we couldn't hang on for just a couple of minutes more after our 2nd. Lambert clearly wasn't/isn't fit. Fox was by far our worst player today - utter she1te. Wasted every corner & free kick by over-hitting every dead ball he took. Well done Billy Sharp. Lighthouse Posted 7 April, 2012 Author Share Posted 7 April, 2012 Whatever you think of him, it would be hard to deny that our midfield was much worse after Guly came off. The only silver lining for me is that I successfully predicted the final score during the first half. Not much to cling onto, admittedly. I thought Guly looked pretty poor and did very little today. 1 run and shot at the end of the first half was about the best of his contribution. I thought De Ridder looked better, but didn't really get much of the ball. If we play the ball in behind and on the ground, he can rip them apart. Today there was a lot of aimless hoofing. Micky Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 We won't go up this year. Got a feeling that WHAM will catch us and Reading will be Champions. Not necessarily a bad thing. Another year to get stronger defensively - need a dependable centre half to partner Hoosveldt and a better right back. If we dont go up this year mate, we wont go up for a few years. This is our best chance - blowing it now would be criminal. People seem to be under the misapprehension that if we don't do it this year, we will next year (because it is in our 5 year plan...!!). Window Cleaner Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 Hold the ball and keep the passing simple. Too much hoofing today and all it did was come back and haunt us. Because the pivotal element in ball holding up and simple passing went off after 5 minutes and might not even be seen again this season.Cork and Hammond can't hold the ball up like he does because they don't have the savvy to see the simple exit ball even before they receive the incoming. Micky Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 TBH on what I saw today I can see us having to pass through the play-offs.Too many players not contributing.Lambert isn't fit, Lallana can't shoot and we seem to be just aimlessly hoofing all of the time. No bite from the midfield and nothing much constructive either. We need to get Sooty to throw some oofle dust on Morgan and Chung to get them back on the pitch by Monday. I really dont think that we have what it takes to do the play offs. They skates are more suited to that scenario. We are a footballing team - we let our football see us through. But when it come time to play ugly and battle a bit we are not too good at it. I dont think we would stand a cat in hells chance in the PO's. I really like De Ridder but we need to get him the ball early enough for him to take them on. If we keep playing it to his feet when he's got a defender up his arse we'll never see the best of him. Still, I'd keep him in and leave Guly out for the balance of the season because, although I appreciate his touches, Guly seldom seems to perform in pressure situations. suewhistle Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 To be honest, I was always a bit worried about this game. Pompey will now probably gently subside after giving it their all, and we can get back to non-derby football with the accent on the football and not the derby. Anyone know how Morgan is, as I think we missed him? Although I think Guly is a bit of a scapegoat for some he didn't do himself any favours. Lambert, as mentioned, is still not quite right, but hopefully a day vegging tomorrow will help. Fonte _will_ score against Palace, or maybe Jos.. Fox will recalibrate his dead-ball foot (please).. S-Clarke Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 First and foremost it was a terrific Derby, played at a high tempo with both teams going for it. Portsmouth were well up for it, from the first minute and I don't think we expected them to play with the intensity that they did. The defending for both goals was, IMO, shocking. 2 great strikes, but it was way way too easy for either of them to strike it. Which dumbass was supposed to be marking Norris? Inexcusable lack of concentration there. Football is a funny game. You can feel as high as a kite, then a minute later you feel like you've had your heart kicked out of you. I feel like we've lost that, and after being in front twice we kind of have. It should have been over when we got that 2nd but we switched off. We now need to beat Palace on Monday otherwise it will swing around and it'll no longer be in our hands as much as it is, although it's kind of slipping away as it is anyway. This game was never going to be played like a top of the table team vs a relegation team, Derby's bring out a level playing field and that's what we had. We didn't play well though, but I think Portsmouth's game plan was spot on - and it's exactly the same game plan that Bristol City, Blackpool and Leicester have played against us this year. And Lambert has clearly been rushed back, didn't look anywhere near match fitness to me. Well off the pace.

Kingsbridge Saint Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 Played very poorly in the most important game of the season. Very disappointed with our thinking under pressure. Thought we were through all that. Wouldn't have deserved the win, but probably should have won anyway but for two lucky lucky punts from two average journeymen players who will probably have wet dreams over them for the rest of their lives. The sooner the DFCSB's are liquidated the better. **** Derbies, I'm over them.
Micky Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 I think you're wrong btw. If we add to the squad in the summer, we have every chance next year. Adding to the squad. We have probably one of the most expensive squads already. As jjsaint just said above - the level of funding required to get us to our current point may not be there next year. All teams, will add to their squads - but that alone is no guarantee of anything.

As I said, their game plan was spot on and tactically they got it right. When they had the ball they used it intelligently and well, whereas we seemed rushed and panicked when we had it and there was very little pattern to anything we did. Very frustrating, but Derby's are always like this. alpine_saint Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 A complete disaster of a weekend. We've completely lost our mojo again - couldnt hold on for 5mins FFS. Rickie isnt fit, Morgan is probably out for the season, NA is totally bereft of a right-side option, Lallana is back to powder-puff play, any team that gets in our face runs rings around us, and we are choking the big occasions, which means we are in real f**king danger of blowing a whole season of good work in 3 weeks, ending up in the playoffs and losing in the first round. I feel f**king sick thinking of those gloating Skate c**ts on their way home. Despite all our wealth and resources we couldnt beat a bunch of dirty cheating morally-coupt tw*ts down to their last fiver. And the title is gone, without question. I think we were shocked by how much they came at us, I don't think we expected it and tactically with Halford in midfield they cut out alot of our threat. We had much more of the game, albeit little end product. Overall a draw was a fair result, but it feels like a sickener. Losing Morgan is a loss though, although I thought Cork gave everything today. Professor Posted 7 April, 2012 Share Posted 7 April, 2012 We should have kept sharp on or subbed him with Barnard We went too defensive bringing on Harding Much as we wanted a different outcome, on the balance of play, its simply unrealistic to complain about the result. It was a hard fought derby and its difficult to see how that side lost by 4 goals last week, but it did and that is even more of a worry. I agree with Viking Warrior that it was mistake to disrupt the side with a couple of minutes to go. If West Ham drop any points that would be a bonus, but it must be assumed they win all their remaining games so we can afford to lose one more as long as we win the other 4. As for Reading, if we can't beat Portsmouth I can't see us beating Reading who are on hot form, so I would say the title is now unlikely.
