Good Friday's games!

Sad to see the attitude that you don't mind being 2nd best as long as we get to the league which we will never win. Its about being best in the league we are in first, and with that will come the promotion as well, fed up with always being 2nd best, desparately want us to win the League, it still hurts the previous 2 times as "best losers".

To me winning the Championship is being the 21st best team in England. If we won we'd be up there with the likes of QPR and Wolves as the winners of NpC/Division 1. There's no big day out at Wembley, no cup final, no big prize money. Just a small trophy and a table which says 1. Southampton 2. Reading.

As I said, it would be great to win it... for about a week. After that it just comes down to HCDAJFU next season, away days you're looking forward too, extar TV money for the club etc. etc.

Last time we were promoted from this League we finished 2nd and Spurs were 3rd. We stayed up 27 years, they've yet to be relegated since. Bolton who won it went down after 2 seasons. Do Spurs fans care they didn't win the League, did we ever think about it in the following 27 years? Was it a comfort for Bolton that they won the second tier, when they were relegated to spend god knows how long in the lower leagues?

The competition this season is for 3 places into the Premiership, other than that I couldn't care less.

for all the talk of Readings form, they have won 8, lost 1, drawn 1 of their last ten.

Our last ten form is won 7, lost 1, drawn 2, which if we win tomorrow becomes won 8, lost 1, drawn 1 - the same as "mighty" Reading.

For all the talk of where have they come from...?, what a roll they are on..., we should be fearful of Reading..., it is exactly the same for them.

nothing to be scared of for me. They won at home today, they have 2 very winnable home fixtures left against Forest and Palace and three very losable fixtures away at Brighton, Saints and Brum.

Beat portsmouth tomorrow and we will be top and running out of games very fast....

Who cares about 27 years time? It should be about winning the league after being top for most of the year, not struggling in after Reading.

That was a bummer, Leeds held out for so long and then contrived to miss the chance of the game.

Still a fully expected result, especially with a depleted Leeds team and the fact they were down to 10 men. Bit of a ****ter it came in the last 5 minutes though.

Stunned by this attitude to be honest.

Sorry Adrian, but I'm in agreement. The nPC title would be a great trophy to win, and a delightful bonus, but at this stage of the season, with six to play, we should only be concerning ourselves with promotion. I want us and Reading to go up, and if you asked me now, I'm not fussed as to which order. If you offered me second, I'd take it. Perhaps my bottle is going in my old age! My point of view on this, is that the title will most likely be decided naturally anyway, when Reading come to SMS. The winner of that game will probably have the title sewn up.

As for Reading's game today, I wasn't too fussed. What I really want is for Barnsley to avoid defeat today and Saints to win tomorrow, and we'd only need two more wins from 5 games to guarantee us promotion.

Barnsley would need to win, which would put us 9 points clear. If Barnley drew it would only be 8, so we'd need 3 wins from the last 5 in that scenario.

Oh and on the debate about us coming 1st or 2nd, of course I want us to come bloody first. I want us to be the champions and I want to see us lift up the most attractive trophy in English football, I don't want to see us lift some micky mouse 2nd place trophy. I want top.

I'd never seen us top a league until this season and winning championships isn't something that'll ever happen regularly here - so let's do it when we have this chance. People shouldn't play down how big an opportunity it is, coming 2nd would be a bit of a anti climax.

Well I for one hated having that poxy little club celebrate being champions instead of us. I've never seen Saints win a league. It's something I desperately want to see, and hopefully the managers and players care about 1st place far more than some on here.
I'd love to see us win this league (having watched us dip out in '78 ) but to be honest, at this moment in time, I couldn't give a toss about who wins this league as long as we are promoted. When and if we are unable to be caught be the third placed team, then I will worry about winning the league.

Worth remembering that we only need a draw - at home - tomorrow to go back to the top.

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is the scenario whereby you can go top of the league with 5 games left and still walk away from St Mary's feeling like you've just been slapped.

I think the most annoying thing about finishing behind Reading would be the fact that I work with a Reading fan. He is the only other football fan in the whole building. He couldn't support Coventry or Port f**king Vale, oh no it had to be Reading. :(

What sums it up is that half the press and even one of our own players think we won the league last year.

I thought the Brighton fans singing "championies" was a bit embarrassing.

I look at it like the JPT, might as well win it if we're in it, but not really too bothered. Certainly wont be emailing my Scouse mates bragging about it.

It will be a million times better than coming third and missing out in the play-offs. I can take an anti-climax that means we are promoted.

I totally see your point, but being top most of the year and being within touching distance of winning something is too good to just shrug off. Promotion is obviously the important thing and the end goal is the same in either position, but to see us lift a proper championship trophy would be magic. We will probably never ever get the chance to win a league again. (not in my lifetime anyway!)

I bet you won't really give two hoots if we finish 2nd whilst on the pitch like walsall last season

Barnsley have been on the beach with a big fat cigar since the realised they were safe a month or so ago much to the frustration of Barnsley fans. Unfortunately I think wham could win by a cricket score. I really hope I am wrong

That sort of relaxed attitude can sometimes bring out the best in players.....

It could go 2 ways. WHU could win comfortably without breaking sweat as Barnsley didn't get a s hit, or Barnsley could really throw an upset by relaxing and playing to their maximum - whilst catching WHU off guard.

I don't care if we come second, above third on goal difference, as long as we go up. Being in my sixties I really didn't think I would ever see Saints in the prem again after we went into the third tier. This season has been beyond my expectations, brilliany.

Barnsley were quite decent at our place I thought...and everyone wants to beat West Ham at home this season - the most high profile game.

I thought all along that West Ham will win 5 if not all of their remaining games. I just have a real nasty feeling about them and their fixtures are easy imo. I really wanted them to batter Reading, yes there would have been a point less of a gap, but had Reading lost to West Ham, would they have been so patient today. I really think we're going to have to win 4 remaining games, and 2 wins this weekend, will ease my tension.

watching how swansea play with, lets be honest some very average players

brendan rodgers is surely heading for great things...?

As you see with us though, it's not about individual talent - it's about getting the right sort of players and the right attitudes to build a team.

Swansea know how each other play, Leon Britton isn't a world beater at all - but he knows his job and his team mates trust him. Having a proper 'team' is much more important than having loads of overpaid stars, IMO.

I'm sure to opposition fans we have quite a few average players in their eyes, but we all function as a team which counts for more.

The bit about them battering Reading makes absolutely no sense. A Reading win was what we all wanted. West Ham will drop points I think.

More than likely Livepool, only to get fired after 4 months in charge because they're midtable. After that he will probably end up propping up a team like Villa or Fulham for a couple of years.

Just a small trophy and a table which says 1. Southampton 2. Reading.

But there's the problem is't it, its not "just a small trophy", its the fecking Football League Championship, the trophy (or perhaps its a successor) that has been fought over since 1888 by the best teams in England, and for many of those years the best teams in the world. It has mostof the great names on it, Man U, Liverpool, Newcastle, etc etc, as well as some crap ones (e.g. Pompey). For anyone with any sense of history it is an important cup. Come 2nd and we are just best losers and don't win anything (again). All we have ever won in my lifetime in the League is the 3rd Division Trophy (hence why I wasn't too bothered last season, we had already won it before) and I don't even remember that. Winning is what it is all about, this being best loser is what is so wrong about this fecking country and the attitude today, oh its ok we did quite well and we played well. ****es me off this bad attitude. I blame Sky for a lot of it and making people believe that being in the Prem League is the prize, its not!!!!

Normally this would worry me, but they will want to play well on free to air national television.

calm down...what we say here will have no bearing on winning the league or not...your attitude or my attitude on here will have zero input on us winning the league.

there is a very real chance we won't..just as much as there that we could...would be blooming lovely if we did...should we don't, I think many will get over it very quickly

There's a bit of cash involved as well, ridiculously low amount for the achievement though, used to be 25K£ for first and 10K£ for second but it may have gone up to 50K£ for first now, just can't remember.Remember seeing it quoted somewhere that we won nigh on a million £ (well Wembley ticket money) for the JPT and whoever it was that was CCC champion in 2009/10,Newcastle perhaps, only got 25K.

Erm. Yeah, but it's not though is it.

Being a (fairly) young'n I'm not quite so hot on which trophy was called what 30 years ago, but regardless of the name it's still the second tier of English foobtall. Winning the league this year wont put us up there with the 80s Liverpool teams etc.
