SaintBobby Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 The latest issue of FFT has another of those interminable lists. They've done these things to death. The top 100 matches, the top 100 upsets, the top 100 types of boot polish etc etc Well, this issue they have the top 50 players in the Football League. Peter Wittingham wins it. Lallana is no. 2. Rickie is no. 3. The other Saints are Sharp at 12 and Guly at 27. Shows how daft these lists are really.... (Morgan, Kelvin and Fonte are all in top 50 for my money. Not so sure Billy or Guly are). But then these list things are only designed to generate debate/discussion/outrage, so I've fallen right into their trap....
Saint_lambden Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Izale McLeod is 13th. A league 2 player, 13th
Appy Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Any list like this without Lallana or Lambert as number 1 is a joke.
benjii Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 If Kelvin and Jos aren't in the top 50 then I'm the blonde girl with the nervous disposition, cute nose, pert buds and strange vagina that I just saw in The Griffin.
Crazy Diamond Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 I know the guys at FourFourTwo and I'm usually their Southampton go-to person. Didn't consult me on this one!
Dig Dig Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 FFS the top 25, at least, should be Saints players. Disgrace.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 FFS the top 25, at least, should be Saints players. Disgrace. You should read the interview they do with Bagpuss; it's like 04/05 has been wiped from the history of space and time.
Window Cleaner Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 These lists are always biased towards goalscorers as are most football awards.
Mr Saints Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Peter Whittingham is better than Rickie Lambert? **** off.
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Peter Whittingham is better than Rickie Lambert? **** off. He's played consistently well in the championship over several seasons, Lambert has had one good season. What's the problem?
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 How on earth can they not have Rickie as no.1? Believe it or not, not everyone thinks anyone who plays for Saints is the greatest person to have ever lived.
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 If Kelvin and Jos aren't in the top 50 then I'm the blonde girl with the nervous disposition, cute nose, pert buds and strange vagina that I just saw in The Griffin. I'm surprised someone with a private education and superb career would frequent such establishments.
whizzpop Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Just had a nose at the mag in my local Tesco Express, Bradley Wright Phillips is rated higher than Kevin Phillips, and Jay Rodriguez. In my opinion this is the poorest rated top 50 players poll they have carried out in recent years.
niceandfriendly Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 He's played consistently well in the championship over several seasons, Lambert has had one good season. What's the problem? I imagine his problem is that he thinks Rickie Lambert is better than Peter Whittingham, and he'd be right. But you know, I'm just suggesting. Hope it helps you in some way.

The Kraken Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Would he be right? In your biased opinion maybe and that of other Saints fan, that is all. Probably also in the opinion of those who voted him Football League Player of the Year. I'd have thought so, anyway.
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Probably also in the opinion of those who voted him Football League Player of the Year. I'd have thought so, anyway. Let's remember that Whittingham has been good over a few seasons, if RL repeats his performance next season he might be able to claim he's the best. One season does not a legend make, just ask Micheal Ricketts and Jonathan Stead.

One season does not a legend make, just ask Micheal Ricketts and Jonathan Stead. Did the Football League get their awards wrong then? Someone should tell RL he needs to give his trophy to Peter Whittingham, if that's the case.
Avenue Saint Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Do a poll amongst the other clubs, ask them who they would take out of whitingham or lambert... There would lie your answer. Smart money is on Rickie
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Did the Football League get their awards wrong then? Someone should tell RL he needs to give his trophy to Peter Whittingham, if that's the case. The awards were for player of the year, which he has been. It doesn't mean he's the best, it means he's been the best this year.
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Do a poll amongst the other clubs, ask them who they would take out of whitingham or lambert... There would lie your answer. My money is on Rickie! And I bet Cardiff fans would say Whittingham.
The Kraken Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 The awards were for player of the year, which he has been. It doesn't mean he's the best, it means he's been the best this year. Well I'm sure I don't understand that logic. Its all very well having been good in a certain league over previous years. But any poll of "who is the best player in the league" relies on current form, not past form over previous years. Its a bit like saying Frank Lampard is the best player in the Premier League right now, as he's proved it over so many previous years.
Avenue Saint Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 And I bet Cardiff fans would say Whittingham. Obviously, but who would the 22 other clubs say?

Its a bit like saying Frank Lampard is the best player in the Premier League right now, as he's proved it over so many previous years. Not at all. Whittingham came 2nd of 3rd I believe, so he's consistently performed in this league at a very good level. Lambert has performed well for one season. If he is consistently in the top 2 or 3 over a period of 3-4 years then you he can claim to be the best. Van Persie has been better than Rooney this season, yet which one would most people say is the better player?

Van Persie has been better than Rooney this season, yet which one would most people say is the better player? Honestly? Right now I'd say van Persie. If I was putting together a Premier League XI they'd perhaps play up front together, but RVP's record this season has been incredible and he's been (for my money) the best striker in the league by some distance. So if I had to say, who is the better player, right now I'd say the Dutchman. Of course, this typE of reasoning means that opinions can change quite regularly.

You say it yourself RIGHT NOW. Who has been better over the last 5 seasons? Lambert is the best player in the league RIGHT NOW but like Rooney, Whittingham has been good at this level over the last 3 or 4 seasons. If it was a top 50 of RIGHT NOWs Lambert wins, but it isn't.

Of course its right now. It has to be. You can't go back over a few seasons, otherwise you rule out players who've been good in this league but either gone off the boil, or who have been promoted. And you're ruling Lambert out from your selection criteria simply because he hasn't played in this division before. Any poll of best player is going to be on a right now basis rather than looking at previous years. Otherwise the question would be "who has consistently been the best player in the Championship over the past 3 or 4 years". That isn't the question being asked. It is "who is the best player", as in of today.
The Kraken Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 The krakman makes a good point... Cheers Roadie.

Avenue Saint Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 No it isn't. It's who is the best, not who has been the best this season. so it's 'who is' and not 'who has been the best' ?
The Kraken Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 No it isn't. It's who is the best, not who has been the best this season. This is going round in circles. Best to leave it and agree to disagree. I'm obvously right,though......
Avenue Saint Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 Look forward to THE game boys. Not long to go! (rubs hands.... Or is it knuckles) violence is bad, just for the record.
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 so it's 'who is' and not 'who has been the best' ? Andy Cole had a couple of season where he scored more goals than Alan Shearer, but who was the best striker? Cole might have been better for a season here and there but Shearer proved himself better over 10 seasons. 99% of people will agree, yes?

Cole might have been better for a season here and there but Shearer proved himself better over 10 seasons. See your point but it's not a retrospective poll, it's a current one. Like I said earlier, if you asked the 24 clubs who they'd rather have in their team out of Rickie and whitingham, I reckon just one club would say whitingham and that's Cardiff. The fact that Rickie got more votes in the poll suggests people CURRENTLY value lambert higher than whitingham. This is decisive.

It isn't though, it's who is the best player, not who is the best player now. And whoever voted in that poll voted Whittingham, who has been good over a few seasons. That, my friend, is decisive.

The football league got it right, 442 didn't. Up the Saints!
Turkish Posted 6 April, 2012 Posted 6 April, 2012 We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. The football league got it right, 442 didn't. Up the Saints! FWIW I'd rather have Lambert too.

But hold on this was a Football League best player not the championship best player so all those goals Rickie scored over the last couple of years should come into it by this logic?
FreemantleSaint Posted 7 April, 2012 Posted 7 April, 2012 I reckon that Davis, Richardson, Hooiveld and Fonte have to be in the top 50 football league players.
