kwsaint Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Call me stupid but why do we all want to go to Wigan so much? I know we've never played them before but is that it?
Turkish Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 I want them to go down so we can sign Victor Moses to play down the right of midfield.
Window Cleaner Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Call me stupid but why do we all want to go to Wigan so much? I know we've never played them before but is that it? We've never played at Wigan but we did play them in the Cup in 86 (or so I think) Remember going to the game at the Dell, commuted from Mons for virtually every home game that season.
stevegrant Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Another one to tick off the 92. This, basically. It's the only ground in the top 2 divisions I've not been to.
Saint_Jonny Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Generally funny if Wigan stay up. Low support, little money and no hope, yet they usually put a run together. Good luck to them. Have a feeling Martinez is a fantastic manager at a very limited club. Keeping them up last year was an amazing achievement, if he does it this year too he really deserves a better job. Sounds a lot like Saints for the whole of the 90's....
This Charming Man Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 New ground and you can't beat an away day in some Northern dump.
Window Cleaner Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 N you can't beat an away day in some Northern dump. I've been to Wigan and believe me you can
The9 Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Call me stupid but why do we all want to go to Wigan so much? I know we've never played them before but is that it? Yep, that's it for me. I've never been. Though I have been past their ground about 20 times between Manchester and Southport on the train. I wouldn't mind them going down if we just got them in a Cup.
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 New ground and you can't beat an away day in some Northern dump. This, and some decent beer and proper fish and chips wi' gravy.

Looking at their remaining matches it's pretty difficult to see exactly where they might get points in April, still if none of the other bottom 5/6 get any much in April the games in May against Blackburn and Wolves might help them out.

The9 Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 If we are both in the same league next year, you can almost guarantee we'll draw them in the League Cup away from home. Fair point, beats getting Sheffield Wednesday or Northampton though.
Lighthouse Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 I'd die much happier going to 91 league grounds and not going to Wigan personally.
mulletsaint Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 I want them to go down so we can sign Victor Moses to play down the right of midfield. Why? Skillful, but way too greedy or lacking in vision to bring others into play.
alpine_saint Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Fond, fond memories of Wigan. Went out with a girl from there for 6 months when I was at Uni. Great nights out at Wigan Pier.
alpine_saint Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Call me stupid but why do we all want to go to Wigan so much? I know we've never played them before but is that it? What, never ? In the 80 years since they formed ?
This Charming Man Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 What, never ? In the 80 years since they formed ? We played them once in the FA Cup in '86 at The Dell. I was shocked at that as well but was soon reminded that they only entered the FL in '76 (I think) after being non-league and were stuck in the lower leagues until they reached the Prem, the year we dropped out of it.
Turkish Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Why? Skillful, but way too greedy or lacking in vision to bring others into play. He's lost his way a bit, he was a huge prospect at Palace. I think in our team he'd be one we could get the best out and would offer us the pace out wide we've been lacking this season.
fanimal Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 Prefer to keep on being ships in the night thank you!
corsacar saint Posted 4 April, 2012 Posted 4 April, 2012 As I said on another thread, Wigan swapped places with us in 2004/5 when we went down,so it would be some what ironic if we were to swap places with them again. It would be great to sign Moses or anyone of their attacking midfielders,if the situation arises.

Sour Mash Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Good pubs and cheap beer in Wigan. Fast train service from London. Plus being a new ground for most, that makes a decent away day in my eyes.
ericofarabia Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 A short bus ride for me from Leigh if we were to have an away match with them whilst I'm back in September. Perfect. Equals we either play them at SMS whilst I'm back or they get relegated. Don't want to even contemplate the3rd option and 4th options!!!!
Thedelldays Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 I met a group of birds from Wigan in Magaluf a few years back......slappers
Saints67 Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 ITV have scrapped plans for a CSI: Wigan. They realised it would never work as everyone's DNA is the same and they have no teeth for dental records.
Lighthouse Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 I met a group of birds from Wigan in Magaluf a few years back......slappers TBF, I think that's more of a 'birds in Magaluf' thing than a 'Wigan' thing.
Minsk Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 I want them to go down so we can sign Victor Moses to play down the right of midfield. The first time I saw him play was for England U19s against 8elarus here in Minsk. The England team was captained by our own Jack Cork and included other players like Danny Welbeck, Ryan Bertrand and Daniel Sturridge. Victor Moses was by far Englands best player that day, despite the 0-0 scoreline. I would be very happy if we signed him.
Dr Who? Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 This, basically. It's the only ground in the top 2 divisions I've not been to. Steve what is your other one? I take it Championship, or Arsenal?
dune Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 I'd probably do Wigan (a) as I like to turn up at a game and pay on the turnstile, but apart from that it's hardly appealing to play at a 3/4 empty subuteo stadium in a bleak northern town.

dune Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 This, and some decent beer and proper fish and chips wi' gravy. I can think of nothing worse.
This Charming Man Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 I can think of nothing worse. Chips with gravy is amazing. Had it last night as a matter of fact.
Window Cleaner Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Chips with gravy is amazing. Had it last night as a matter of fact. I used to be very fond of chips with curry, not being a rice lover and a bit iffy with wheat products, used to get it all of the time in the Mohti Mahal.
stevegrant Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Steve what is your other one? I take it Championship, or Arsenal? Er, read it again...
dune Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Chips with gravy is amazing. Had it last night as a matter of fact. Quite how greasy soggy chips can be amazing is beyond me.
Sour Mash Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 I can think of nothing worse. Of course, you're correct, fish with gravy doesn't go. Should be a meat and potato pie or a steak and kidney pudding to go with that, load on a load of mushy peas as well. Sheff Weds have that in the ground for a couple of quid.
stu0x Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Why? Skillful, but way too greedy or lacking in vision to bring others into play. True. If only he had the pedigree of being, oh I dunno, Celtic's 8th choice centre back?
Thedelldays Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Why? Skillful, but way too greedy or lacking in vision to bring others into play. ever heard of coaching players..?
capitalsaint Posted 5 April, 2012 Posted 5 April, 2012 Quite how greasy soggy chips can be amazing is beyond me. Correct! If they aren't triple-cooked they're nothing.

Best half time grub I've ever encountered.

I think they must have the League record for most attempts to win promotion. Although I can't pinpoint the exact seasons, I think they went out in the play-offs about 3 times before getting out of L1, then had a similar fate for a couple of seasons in a row in CCC before getting up to the Prem.
