Window Cleaner Posted 1 April, 2012 Share Posted 1 April, 2012 Don't know where these figures are coming from, but the Echo did all the sums last weekend and the article can be found here . The magic figure needed to guarantee 2nd place is 92 points. That's based on both Reading and West Ham winning all their games, which would see Reading finish on 94, West Ham on 92 and Saints supposedly beating West Ham on goal difference. Of course, it's fairly likely that neither of them will win all their remaining games, but getting into the ifs and buts is pure conjecture. The fact remains that Saints are currently chasing 92 points to guarantee promotion. that's not even right. West Ham can obtain a maximum of 90 points at this stage of the season. sotonjoe Posted 1 April, 2012 Share Posted 1 April, 2012 (edited) that's not even right. West Ham can obtain a maximum of 90 points at this stage of the season. it was right last weekend when they printed but of course it's now out of date, hence why i deleted it. Current max points are West Ham 90 Reading 94 – if beat saints saints 93 – if lose to Reading ... which I interpret to mean that we need to keep and eye on west ham and target matching their max points to guarantee promotion as a worst case scenario. That means 90 points is our target which I make another 12 points to guarantee second place. Edited 1 April, 2012 by sotonjoe

Matthew Le God Posted 1 April, 2012 Share Posted 1 April, 2012 That means 90 points is our target which I make another 12 points to guarantee second place. Mathematically it is 13 points required to guarantee it. The goal difference advantage will just make it very likely that 12 would do.

sotonjoe Posted 1 April, 2012 Share Posted 1 April, 2012 Must say though ... targeting 4 wins from these last six games still makes me nervous. May just about be enough depending on other results but one more win from somewhere else will seal it. I admire your confidence and I firmly believe we 'should' smash the Skates. However, I know derbies are tricky. I went to the Palace League Cup game and they are a capable side. I'd like to think a win against the Skates will see us confident going into Monday. I have slight concerns that failing to get a win against the Skates will leave us feeling a bit too pressured for Monday's game. I think it's interesting that some people seemed to be saying we had an 'easy' run in a couple of months back, but it doesn't look that easy right now! I want us to do it, I think we should do it, but I have some worries that it might all go wrong. Still, it's gonna be bloody exciting. I'll be at all the games except Boro so I hope I get to actually witness the bloody moment we do clinch it!

sotonjoe Posted 2 April, 2012 Share Posted 2 April, 2012 Every game is tough or easy, completely depends which Saints show up. Hull away was tough and we made it look easy. Doncaster we made pretty tough. Peterborough and Middlesborough, and Palace for that matter really could go either way. All are capable of doing what Blackpool did, but equally all could turn out to be standard wins for us. Exactly!
stu0x Posted 2 April, 2012 Share Posted 2 April, 2012 I know the natural reaction is to say 'I'd take 2nd now', but how would most feel coming 2nd to Reading? Yes I'd celebrate promotion, but after the way we've played this season, I would be a little disappointed. We can 2nd to Brighton last season and I can't say I liked that, despite the relief of getting up. There were excuses and clearly we were the better side, but we still missed out on a title. We just don't have the history to miss out on opportunities like this. Perhaps our best ever chance of a title now? If we go up, this could be our last title chance for a very, very long time! Yes it's all about the money and glamour of the Premier League, but we have had that before. I'd just love to see Saints win a league in my lifetime. I'd remember promotion and enjoy it, but could never celebrate 2nd in quite the same way. Who won the title last year? I reckon QPR would give just about anything to swap places with Norwich or Swansea right now. And Brighton would give anything (including their L1 title) to swap places with us. The title is a nice-to-have, but it pales into utter irrelevance compared to promotion.

I'll be in my usual minority of 1 but I thought that Puncheon had a pretty good game at Hull.Worked hard, got some tackles in and closed down really well. Can't understand what's going on with him, 1 game in 2 games out usage.A far better player than Chaplow,at least he can stand up and control the ball. Lord Duckhunter Posted 2 April, 2012 Share Posted 2 April, 2012 I thought the best result was West Ham beating Reading and I still stand by that. Once West Ham get into the nothing to lose stage I can see them overpowering sides. I feel that they're a bit edgy at the moment because they dont know whether to stick or twist. I think they'll beat Barnsley and then will have 2 home games on the bounce. If they get a bit of momentum, they have quite an easy run in. Reading have 3 tough games, followed by 3 pretty easy ones. We need to be above them after 13th. I hope I'm wrong about West Ham, but I feel we must win the next 2.
Window Cleaner Posted 2 April, 2012 Share Posted 2 April, 2012 From reading the reports on the West Ham-Reading game I see that Karacan went off after 55 minutes and was replaced by Jay Tabb who himself was subbed only 10 minutes or so later. Would those be injuries? anyone know enough about Reading to know that? If that's the case that would be 2/3 of their engine room gone wouldn't it. scotty Posted 2 April, 2012 Share Posted 2 April, 2012 Just browsing KUMB and see there's a thread (without irony) asking why they didn't loan Berbatov, who 'is only on about 110k per week. Someone quickly replied (with even less irony) that Berbatov wouldn't fit into their style of play anyway and would be wasted. This makes our Michael Owen thread look almost sensible. The Champonship is the target for this season, and thankfully that is what the team is after. Why do some people believe that settling for being best loser is good enough. The PL is not the be all and end all. That is for next season and you get to play in it whether you come first, best loser or also ran that wins the play-off. Therefore winning the title is the aim and should be what we are all striving for. We have never won a title in my life time and I want desparately for us to do so now. This is the Football League Championship, and has been won by many illustrious teams and I want our name to be on that role of honour as well. Winning League One was not such a big deal (we have actually won the 3rd Division before). It still annoys me that our previous 2 promotions to the 1st Division were as runners-up/best loser.
