The entrepreneur's colourful story will not have flickered onto their Bloomberg terminals or appeared in their morning business sections, but it is one that highlights how far the tentacles of the mortgage crisis have reached. In January 2006 - before the phrases "sub-prime" or "credit crisis" had slipped into the lexicon - the Hampshire-based property millionaire was busy trying to buy a chunk of Southampton Football Club and looking forward to a bright future as owner of mortgage broker Go Business Mortgages. Two-and-a-half years later Strode-Gibbons' dreams have turned to dust, leaving him nursing his wounds after the broker went to the wall last month.
