Fuel in the tank?

"Tanker drivers have called off their proposed strike amid fears any disruption they might cause would pale into insignificance alongside the chaos cabinet ministers have created with a few poorly chosen words.

‘We were all set to strike over pay, no, hold on, safety concerns wasn’t it? Yeah, safety concerns,’ said one tanker driver. ‘Anyway, then the PM advises people to go out and buy petrol they don’t need while Francis Maude recommends turning your garage into a massive fire hazard, and suddenly the country grinds to a halt while everybody has forgotten about us. So we might as well not bother now.’

Labour leader Ed Miliband was unwilling to comment on the cancellation of the strike while he was queuing to fill up his scooter, but did complain about the 20% increase on the price of his lukewarm ESSO sausage roll."

It was the most stupid advice.

Francis Maude is a massive weak link in this government, just like Lansley and May.

The really scary thing is that apart from a few ministerial casualties, this is pretty much the Tory "first team" :(

Yes, incredibly stupid. However i guess she would not have even considered doing it had a grade a pillock politicican started spouting off his nonsense.

Used to live in Horsham, Maude's constituency, a what an @rse that man is.

Strangely now live within half a mile of where this unfortunate woman lives. Was passed by the emrgency vehicles on my way home yesterday.

I know what you are saying but people can make their own decisions. The government provides roads but i dont blame them if a nutter goes 150 and kills themself.

I'm no supporter of the government but accidents happen everyday because people do stupid things.

if you are a grown human being and actually start pouring fuel from various containers in your kitchen....whilst the oven is on, the toaster is on and smoke a fag and everything else you MUST do as the government suggested it apparently...then if you blow up, natural selection would have taken its course

Yes, yes. No doubt the incident will be included as a nomination for this years Darwin Awards.

There are many incidents throughout history of normally rational people doing amazingly stupid things during periods of hysteria - whether instigated by politicians, media or even due to a radio play?

This woman will have to live with the consequences of her actions and bare the physical scars to go with the emotional ones. I suppose her greatest regret will be that she wasn't blessed with being one of the peak evolutionary specimens that inhabit this board......

I've got to agree with you there, this woman was clearly moronic.

Yes she was but Maude's advice to the country was immediately criticised by the fire brigade as highly dangerous.

Has he apologised yet?

Obviously a very stupid person. We are all aware that there are stupid people around, which is why it's not a good idea for MPs to suggest that people store petrol in containers around our property.

Stupid Tory c*nt.

"But now that I have heard the Conservatives’ private explanation, which is being handed down to constituency associations by MPs, I begin to feel angry.

The private message is as follows. “This is our Thatcher moment. In order to defeat the coming miners’ strike, she stockpiled coal. When the strike came, she weathered it, and the Labour Party, tarred by the strike, was humiliated. In order to defeat the coming fuel drivers’ strike, we want supplies of petrol stockpiled. Then, if the strike comes, we will weather it, and Labour, in hock to the Unite union, will be blamed.”"

I think at the end of the day it is quite a shrewd move by the Government, despite the inconvenience. Union pipes up and thinks fuel drivers strike, pensions are a bit shy of what they should be, members being asked to work a bit quicker for their £45k-£50k a year for an 8 hour day, hint at pigging up the Easter Holidays with strikes when they think it will be most news worthy.

The Government knows what the fuel stocks are around the country, whip up a little frenzy to deplete the stocks, the nations backs will be up as queues start up. As it works too well, downscale the issue, to prevent total shut down, but the nation is ****ed off already, so the Union suddenly knows that they will get zero support from the public and climbs down from the Easter threat.

That dopey bint in the Kitchen just became a "casualty of war", no body could believe anyone could be so dense as to decant Petrol in the kitchen while the gas cooker is Switched on! If anyone is to blame beyond this stupid person, it's the Union for sparking talk of a strike and the media for whipping it up.

Yeah "bloody Tories!" er coalition! Labour would have just pulled their own trousers down and bend over the desk and piddled more money up the wall.

It's ironic is it! :D The conservatives (you know, the ones who are doing their very best to conserve our NHS) appear to hate the "workshy" disabled "scroungers" but they appear to be handing the tools to the mentally inept to qualify for the benefits that she'll no doubt be turned down for!

I read a Telegraph piece by Charles Moore yesterday, entitled Even I'm Starting to Wonder: what do this lot know about anything?

But now that I have heard the Conservatives’ private explanation, which is being handed down to constituency associations by MPs, I begin to feel angry.

Then, if the strike comes, we will weather it, and Labour, in hock to the Unite union, will be blamed.”

He continues:-

There is a key difference which ministers have not spotted. When Mrs Thatcher piled up the coal at power stations until the strike began in 1984, she was not inconveniencing the public. In 2012, the Coalition is trying to press-gang the public, without saying so, into its political battles. All those people queuing on the forecourts were pawns in a Government-organised blame-game.

So, shrewd move, or could this come back to bite them? Especially since we're now saying it is temporarily safe to let fuel hauliers drive for 11 hours a day to deal with the mess created by this week's debacle.

It's only going to go up unless we invest in alternatives. We can cut tax all we want, but it's only treating the symptoms of the underlying cause.

or bring back smoking......when we price people out of getting trollied...we will have to put tax up else where

Heavy smoking was great for non smoking tax payers. People paid a fortune in tax and tended to die before drawing on their state pension much. Another good reason for legalising crack.
