Kelvin Davis - Southampton Legend

Look at the banner across the top of the page - there are eight Saints legends. Not many would argue with the names on that list. I propose a ninth - Kelvin Davis. Admittedly not the greatest keeper to grace this club (Shilton and Niemi would certainly head that list), but in terms of his loyalty and influence on the team I think he deserves the highest credit. He chose to stay with us when relegated to League 1 in 2009 when others with less character would have jumped ship. He's been a huge presence in the team in the three years since then, and I for one would love to see him lead us out in the Prem. So come on mods- time for Legend number nine!

You make a good point here to be fair.

Some would say Lallana, but he's still young.

Kelvin stuck with us through thick and thin. Although we've probably all had those moments where he astounds us, both in good and bad ways, he is a great guy.

He's contributed a lot and does a lot for the club.

I agree, make room for Kelvin.

I will be flayed alive for saying it but for me Kevin Keegan wasn't really a legend - he was an immense signing to be sure but there are a few others from that team who I rated more.

There I said it.

Much respect to Kelvin for sticking with us through the dark times

Agree. It was one of those 'where we're you when....' moments though. Akin to signing Beckham in the close season. Now there's a thought......

Oi! KK legend status should not be questioned! Reflected a fantastic era.

Much though I love Kelvin, not sure he's there yet?

Have to agree that I think Kelvin should be seen as a legend for Saints. Not the greatest keeper we've had, however has stuck with us through thick and thin and has kept that No. 1 jersey his own. It would be quite astounding that he has been with us down to league 1 and back. He has lived the same life as us fans in that respect and has stuck with us, much like the fans.

I personally would like Benali up in the banner as well!

Unless there is an agreed criteria as to what constitutes legendary status we will never agree. For me it is longevity at least 200 games, loyalty publicly committed to the club and delivers on the commitment, can not be any other clubs legend and one who most supporters respect. So in my 48 years following the Saints my legends are George O'brian, Tommy Traynor, Terry Paine, Mick Channon, Ron Davies, Bobby Stokes (FA Cup guarantees his place), Nick Holmes, Danny Wallace, Matthew Le God, Francis Benali, Jason Dodd and yes Kelvin Davis. So no Shilton (Leicester have first call on him), no Keegan (take your pick from S****horpe, Liverpool and the Barcodes), and as of today no Lambert but he is well on the way.

Agreed. Steve Williams, Steve Moran, Nick Holmes, David Armstrong and Danny Wallace, to name but a few, are more Saints legends than KK for me. How long was he with us? Three seasons?

Two and only one of them was any good. Don't get me wrong a great season it was with 30 odd goals but legendary status comes from more than that

By the way you named all the names I would pick above KK as well

I'll always remember Kelvin's perfomance against Leeds this season.

Whether or not you think he should be considered a Saints legend, I think we can agree that was a legendary perfomance.

We're not there yet, but if we do go up, Kelvin has been a massive part of that journey back up from the bottom of League One.

He had to leave the West Ham training ground to walk back in here during that, and along the way, in three seasons, he's led us to a win at Wembley, followed by what will hopefully be confirmed as two successive promotions.

Legend in my eyes.

First one on the bus three years ago, remember he turned down West Ham to stay with us. Huge statement of intent and commitment.

iirc, we were in admin at the time & Kelvin turned down a move to Prem W.Ham. He stuck with us through the sh!t & his loyalty alone earns him "legendary" status along with a place in next seasons starting 11.

Unless Big Ron is added I would prefer to see no other changes. It is already poor in my opinion that Ron Davies is not in the line-up of legends. He should have been one of the first three chosen (Channon, Tiss and Davies). I think the thing is though, they are not really meant to be the biggest legends, they are meant to represent the different eras of Saints.

As a person Kelvin is a top bloke, no doubt, but legendary status, not for me.

Leave it as it is. We are lucky we have so many who would merit a position and if they were all up there it would make the Sgt Pepper cover look under-populated.

You can put a case for many of them without it being a slight on Kelvin. He's definitely on the list of top blokes, but better keeper and more of an influence than Tim? Even Budgie was something of a 'legend' - his antics certainly were.

But Ron? Yes, and I'm sure it would give him a smile.

Kelvin has earned his spurs with us..

no matter what happens, people will always think very very highly of him and he would get a standing ovation when he is one of those ex players that comes back for a visit etc.

for me, MLT is the ultimate legend, but kelvin is in the next bracket...not to shabby at all

a great leader, professional and example at the club.

Considering the grief that Kelvin had to take when he first signd I think he has done brilliantly for the club to stick with us to to turn a large part of the fan base around. His performace againt Leeds was awesome and whilst he is not the complete goalkeeper, he is easily for me our third best after Shilts and Niemi - perhaps alongside Flowers.

Being a legend is about doing it year after year. Sadly Keegan's 2nd year was spent mostly in the treatment room so we only really got one good season out of him.

If we go up again Davies will have played a huge part in that process - legend or not.
