dune Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 The UK reserves, according to one industry expert, could be seven times larger than the whole of the North Sea gas field. In a statement, the Energy Minister Charles Hendry also said it doesn't know how economically and environmentally viable it will be to extract. "At best, it's years away," he added. "But if it comes, we must be ready to take full advantage of it." That could be the signal for a new dash for gas that could transform the country's economy... but also our countryside. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-17491470
Colinjb Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 Relax, the East Midland is an eyesore anyway. Let the gasworks flourish!!!

Hockey_saint Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 Gas? in the Midlands? I blame it on the curries!
SuperMikey Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 Hopefully, **** having our countryside littered with monstrous turbines. I'd much prefer to go nuclear. Tbh I prefer nuclear energy as well. Much better as a short-term solution over the next 50-75 years than renewable technology which hasn't really been developed to make it as efficient as it can be yet. dune Posted 25 March, 2012 Author Share Posted 25 March, 2012 It's a big thing this discovery because in say 20 years time it could pay off our debts. Not to mention all that coal that Maggie left buried for a rainy day.

pap Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Getting this stuff out of the ground requires a process called 'fracking', which is nice because they get to use a word from Battlestar Galactica, but not so cool when the water is contaminated with gas, or indeed, taps turn into fireballs when you turn them on! It also causes low level earthquakes, we've had several round here that have been proved to be due to the testing for shale gas extraction.
