eurosaint Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 Watched the Old Firm match today and was very impressed (again!) with Alan McGregor ! Made me think about next season and the role that Kelvin Davis will play ? Like most, I love the guy for his character and loyalty but reckon that next season (Premier league or not!) we need to strengthen this position ! Bart does not inspire me, so we need someone new in addition to Kelv ! No point in buying a backup, so a top keeper (like McGregor) vying for the jersey makes sense to me ! Right now Rangers are in the poo and we are flying high, could be a good time to make a move, no ??
S-Clarke Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 There's no reason why Kelvin cannot do a job for us if we get to the premier league. He deserves his crack and he will start the season in our team, almost guaranteed. We will sign a new keeper as Bart is out of contract, I'd imagine we'll look for an up and coming young talent. p.s - you're tempting fate slightly. Ohio Saint Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 Age, skills and talent aside, KD contributes greatly to the team spirit. He is the team joker and ice breaker. If he gets moved on from the team, I hope he gets to stay with the club in some other capacity.

Saintandy666 Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 We should give Davis a go. I reckon he could do it in the prem. Keepers peak much later than outfield players, and at 35, there's no reason why Davis can't go for a season in prem. That said, I like the idea of Kasper Schmeichel. Katalinic Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 If we are going to sign a new keeper we could do worse than Al-Habsi at Wigan. Kelvin of course deserves a chance but the goalkeeping position is an area of the squad where we don't in reality have competition for the place - as much as I like Bart it would probably suit both parties to have fresh start. Hopkins Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 Seeing as he's by far the most respected man in the dressing room I think dropping him upon promotion would be a huge gamble. Think if we were to sign a keeper it would be a young one who we could ease into the team over time rather than feel pressured to play immediately. Dr Who? Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 Kelvin is in the middle of the form of his life. We need a younger keeper who can step in, and take over if and hen required. Kelvin has help us get to the brik of the premier league. If we see this though, he deserves to start as our no1.
MarkSFC Posted 25 March, 2012 Share Posted 25 March, 2012 as far as making saves I think Kelvin is up there with the best. Unfortunately other aspects of his game are not so good which is probably the reason england never came calling. His command of his area is un-inspiring and he stays on his line too much at corners for me. Also his kicking is not the most accurate. I also think that his distribution in terms of speed lets him down. I dont blame him for the last two weaknesses in his game as when he learnt the game keepers could pick the ball up more and for most of h4s career he has just hoofed the ball as opposed to playing out from the back as we do now. The game has moved on as have saints and sooner rather than later kelvin will have to too in order for saints to keep progressing even though he has shown unquestionable loyalty and service. I hope he goes into coaching for us.

That's why Man Utd shelled out £22m on David De Gea. To the person who suggested Ben Foster - please god no. No journey men keepers like him, Carson and Robinson. There is a reason they've been all unable to settle anywhere decent.

Besides having Kelvin on the bench would mean he would still be a big part of every match day, and we would all be happy in the knowledge that we had a great understudy, and maybe a future as part of the backroom staff

rooney Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Kelvin is a must for us if we get in the premiership but we must look further afield, as we did when we signed Tim Flowers who had to wait his chance. A young good goalkeeper would be ideal as cover for Kelvin for a year or two. Hennesey or Al Habsi would be good if their team gets relegated but I cannot see them wishing to play second fiddle, even for a short period. Weston Saint Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I said this back in January on here Strengths: Davis is a great shot stopper and kicker. Up there with the best. Has a great presence behind the scenes as club captain and highly respected by players and coaches. Weaknesses: He does not command his area enough. He cannot hold a shot leading to too many follow up chances. He has a near post weakness. His distribution from the back is poor because he needs too much thinking time. Overall: Great servant for the club but as we move up the leagues, so we will need a keeper who has his strengths but not his weaknesses. Time for a new keeper from outside of the club. Too late for Davis to rectify his weaknesses. They are part of his make up and have been with him for years. Premier with Sunderland, admittedly with a very poor team, showed him for what he is. Charlie Wayman Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 The last thing we want to do now is start this nonsensical speculation over Davies's ability especially as he has been by far the most consistent and reliable player we've had this year. It's not our erratic defence that has kept so many clean sheets it's Kelvin so stop all this claptrap about him not being good enough for the PL - of course he is, he's played in it FFS! conaero Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Fair enough but we must look to the future, Bart is not going to cut the mustard, he has had his chances, and not does not even make the bench. When he (Bart) first tuned up, he was a revelation, then after the debacle of the playoffs, he never seemed to regain his confidence, shame as he certainly did have potential. derry Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I believe in loyalty and am not an admirer of Kelvin Davis apart from being a magnificent reaction shot stopper, a good accurate dead ball kicker and courageous. If we are promoted and want to play out from the back then he is not the man for the job. Having said that I believe like Norwich and Swansea we should keep this team together and add talented competition to deepen and strengthen from within the English league. Not the Barton and Wright Phillips mercenaries of this world. Davis should have his chance to play but we must sign a very competent keeper who will have to fight for his place as all new players in the last two seasons have. Marsdinho Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Alex Smithies I'd go for Alex Smithies as well, He's had a few injuries of late, but has played for England at U16, 17, 18, 19 and 21's, he's only 22 and would probably jump at the chance to swap L1 football for a place on the bench in the Prem. With Adkins managing his fitness injuries, I'm sure he would be pushing for a 1 XI place.

Pretty much my view as well, I implied in the OP that Kelv needed competition rather than being replaced outright, hence the suggestion of signing McGregor ! To survive in the Premier league you really do need 2 top keepers and right now we only have (arguably) one ! As someone already stated, you cannot afford to let your heart rule your brain, so some forward planning may well be in order !

Lord Duckhunter Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I cant see what the issue is, Kelvin deserves to be number 1 next season. It's strange it's even being discussed. Personally I think the number 2 keeper should be an older guy. It's a real tough job to train all week and then sit on the bench (provided Nigel picks a keeper) with little prospect of coming on, but having to be ready for the 1 in 100 chance that you do. If Nigel thinks Bart will replace Kelvin in the end, then he needs to go out on loan for a season, maybe to Boscombe or someone like that. You need a good solid pro as a back up, not a youngster with lots to prove. The odd Cup game is not enough when you're talking about the Premiership. I would be worried if Kelvin was out for the rest of this season and we're flying, I dread to think what Bart would be like at Old Trafford or Anfield.
