A tale of two games

Yesterdays match against Doncaster set me thinking, the last time we played them was probably the lowest ebb (in a non footballing perspective) i can remember as a saints fan.

Boycotts of the club; sub 18,000 crowd; going down to league one; protests during the game; saints fans fighting saints fans; facing admin and perhaps not having a club; an atmosphere of desperation and anger everywhere.

Roll on to yesterday and i realised how far we'd come, a full stadium, top of the league, smiling faces all around me and a feeling of positivity from all around.

In fact i actually did something i don't normally do, standing in the Northam i'm normally singing and shouting after a goal, but after the first yesterday i stopped for a couple of minutes just to look around me and take it in. And god i'm glad i did, what a change, what a club, what a team and what a manager.

So thank you Nigel, Markus and the players, it's good to have Southampton football club back and i for one won't forget where we've come from or how close we went to not having it.

Good post - I remember that game v Donny. Jan 2009, lost 1-2, Fowllyd and me sat in the Alex wondering how much worse it was going to get. Think the Charlton game at home that season probably was worse - but that time is like a million years away from yesterday. Massive credit to Markus, Cortese, Adkins and the players!

It was my 49th birthday that day as well! Awful result, but at least the beer helped ease the pain. The Charlton game was definitely worse though. From where we are now, it's great to look back!

Threw my season ticket on the pitch, stormed out round to the main entrance to try and confront that cretin Rupert Lowe! What a sad day and I never felt so angry at how our proud club had descended into a near laughing stock. What a brilliant and fabulous transformation, we should be grateful to all concerned.

Remember the 2009 game well, especially as Donny were still somehow below us in the league- fans fighting among themselves, incidents flaring up all over SMS like a forest fire, parts of the Itchen North trying to assail the directors area. A really anarchic, ugly mood. Quite a buzz though.

Someone in front of me in Kingsland did the same with their ST during the Watford game (after their 3rd)

I always felt that game was the low point for me, by the time we had the Donny game I was just resigned to the inevitable.

Still no pain no gain-onwards and upwards.

Jesus - I know they beat us 1-0, but we were top of the league at the time!!

Incidentally Billy Sharp has scored every goal in the two meetings between us this season.

Billy Sharp 2 -1 Billy Sharp
