Minty Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I wouldn't criticise people who *routinely* leave early but I do wonder why they really need to and feel a bit sorry for them to be honest. Why do they need to 'beat the traffic' and get home 20 minutes earlier? And what are you going to do when you get home? Have a cuppa, eat dinner, watch 'talent' shows on telly? Do you really need that extra 20 minutes?! If i'm going to football I just build travel time into things. Even if it's just a quick one, why not go to the pub for a half after the game, mix with some fellow fans, enjoy the day, not just the game, and then leave after the majority of traffic has gone? Everyone is in too much of a rush these days. Just slow down and enjoy the day!
influx Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 It is embarrassing when people leave early aww! Do you get embarrassed by some of the chants too?? Honestly, the fans who berate other fans for not being as committed as them, (well you say committed, i say a little bit sad in some cases) are the ones who need to take a long hard f*cking look at themselves. influx Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Might as well buy their tickets and stay at home, then they'd have no traffic worries whatsoever. oh and now you're having a dig. lolololol.
JRM Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 it is like the man united effect i think, people get so used to winning they start to lose the excitement and enjoyment of what used to be a rare event getting a home win. People don’t bother to celebrate, or cheer off the players, just head to the gates to set off home with 5-10 mins of the game still to play. Sad really. influx Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 How is it sad FFS?, they are no doubt happy with the decision they have made. I really don't understand why there is such an issue. Ive had to stand up a few times to let these guys out, and even that doesnt bother me. Ive also left early a couple of times, because I wanted to get to the pub before the rush. Saint_Jimmy Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I do exactly the same, especially when 43 is open for Saints fans you end up being the last people out the ground trying to get out of 42, which then means it takes an age to get over the bridge. Skill is to get down to the bottom of the steps by the time the last Saints player is walking off the pitch.

You talk like it's some kind of new phenomenon, people leaving 5 minutes early before the end of a game, It's not, it happens in every ground up and down the country and will always happen. It's obviously only just become apparent to those in the Northam who have just had their first wet dream. Let people do what they want, anybody who buys a ticket is entitled to come and go when they like. I have to say that there seems to be a big group of Saints fans in the age 15-24 bracket who are absolutely moronic. I turn up to games these days and I look around and wonder which rock they have crawled out from. I actually wonder how half of them can afford to attend games, surely the dole doesn't pay that well. lizardking365 Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Those people leaving early doesn't effect you, and I'm pretty sure posting about it on a forum isn't going to change their decision to do so. Also, holding an ST doesn't make you anymore or less of a supporter! =]

Tell me where you've seen so many people leaving early when their team is getting an important win, in one of the best seasons for a long, long time? saintneilo84 Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I can see both sides of the story here to be honest, yes I think the team should get an applause at the end of the game however when catching the train down (as i live near Brizzle) you sometimes have to leave early to make sure you get back for the train. Especially if it is a late kick off as the last train back that way is 22.20 so I am hoping that we don't get promoted at the reading game as a might miss my train home. Doctoroncall Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 maybe just watch the game in future and you might not all notice people leaving lol...who really cares I think the point is when it's the odd few it's OK, but when it's a more it's difficult to actually see the football with people passing by, especially if you are close to the exit points. Golden Balls Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I don't tend to leave before the final whistle as I usually only have to walk back to Bedford place and am in no rush. I can understand why some people have to leave though. But you're not telling me that the amount of people that left early on Saturday really had somewhere to go? They just wanted to cut down on the travelling time. Seems odd really. Paying att that money to miss 10% of it sitting in traffic. Even still, when the game is effectively over as a contest, I can see the appeal to some to want to miss some of the traffic. What I really don't understand is when its 1-1 and on a knife edge and plenty still leave!! What's the point? It's like going to the cinema and missing the last 10 minutes of the film. Madness. latter day saint Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 Started singing "we choose our own games, we choose our own games, we are block 43, we choose our own games" at the block 42 mongs the other week. sussexsaint Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 I used to go week in , week out with my grandad and he always, always left 5 minutes before the end, the number of goals we missed drove me nuts , all to get home for tea
adrian lord Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 (edited) What about getting to the ground early or late for kick off? Does a similar Uber/Plastic rule apply? So, would an Uber arrive an hour and a half before kick off, while the Plastics amble in casually five or even ten minutes after kick off? Or would it be the other way round - Plastic traffic-phobics would get to the ground an hour and a half early to "miss the traffic on the way in", while the Ubers subject themselves to the full horror of jams, parking aggro, risking a fight with the visiting club's firm, risking missing the kick off and an early goal....etc.etc..... There might be people in the corporates who never leave, live there, a sort of Uber Prawn Sandwich. They miss all the traffic, all the time. ericb Posted 26 March, 2012 Share Posted 26 March, 2012 So, would an Uber arrive an hour and a half before kick off Ahh the good old days of getting the milton an hour and a half early to "take up space" so you could still see when people came in. Meant **** all really since everyone just squeezed into their normal spots anyway but it was still part of the ritual.

Meant **** all really since everyone just squeezed into their normal spots anyway but it was still part of the ritual. that's so true, most of us had our own standing spot in the dell, with virtually the same people around you every game, i remember a group of old boys every game would stand leaning on a crush barrier in the centre of the archers, no matter who saints played, they were there, often surrounded by away fans, but they were not going to be moved
Saint_DB Posted 28 March, 2012 Share Posted 28 March, 2012 It is obviously not just a Southampton thing, and obviously not just an English thing - just saw Milan fans on tv streaming out of the San Siro 5-10 minutes before FT with their team gallantly holding Barcelona to a 0-0 draw. Macey_J2 Posted 30 March, 2012 Share Posted 30 March, 2012 Staying untill the end is a mark of respect to the players and management team; win, lose or draw. Its the same as walking out early of any performance, a theatre production, public speech, musical recital. The players notice it when alot of people leave early, and last week it was embarassing for Southampton Football Club to see SO MANY people leaving that early. As mentioned before, Jos makes an effort to give the thumbs up to supporters, maybe you should show him respect back. I takes longer to get out, but it doesn't matter when you are showing your gratitude to the players for putting the effort in. If all supporters cleared off before the match finished, how would the players feel?!!?!
