Ever the Pessimist

Don't know why but I tend to see life as a glass half empty rather than half full. Following saints is no exception. If (when) we beat Donny this afternoon I'm officially going to see our promotion prospects as being probable rather than possible.

Any other pessimists out there willing to share what it will take to view things with optimism?

I'm with both of you on this. I'm convinced we'll slip up this afternoon and then go on a dreadful run that will see us finish 3rd and then fail to go up in the play offs.

I have no idea why people think like this! Bizarre outlook to have.

It was only you who had the moronic view that we'd be anywhere near 17th, which is why you need to be tied up into some sort of asylum! It'll keep you away from Hoddle too. ;)

Not a moronic view, indeed a very valid one. I got it wrong on this issue.

Having said that, I maintain my long held view that the biggest mistake SFC made in recent years was the failure to re-appoint Hoddle in 2004, or someone with a similar pedigree, experience and status. The appointment of Luggy was a shambolic decision that ultimately led to our relegation.

Getting it wrong is one thing, carrying on and on and on about it long after it became evident that it wasn't going to happen was just moronic but as most assumed it was just trolling no-one took any notice.

There are two issues on this post, which do you mean ?

Have to say I got that wrong.

Well done for, finally, admitting it!!

P.S. I was probably one of the few who would have welcomed Hoddle back; but am now fully convinced that Adkins is a far superior manager!!!!!

The game against Posh is immense, anything but a win and they will begin to doubt automatic.

Now you are trolling, again!!

;)

(In case of any doubt, I fully agree with you.)

It will be a critical week ahead for the hammers. Their game in hand on Tuesday against a posh side who recently beat Reading 3-1 followed by the match against Reading. Going to be more than one twitchy person in London this week.

If Wham dont win on Tuesday then were up for my money

If they do only draw on Tuesday and beat Reading on Saturday, they go 2nd which will be a huge boost for them. This would put us 5 points ahead of both of them going into the evening game at Blackpool. It is possible for us not to go up but there are so many ifs that would have to happen, I just cant see it, especially with Readings remaining away games.

Back in December I started a thread in which I said I didn't see Saints going up automatically. I pointed out that our poor away form did little to suggest we'd get anything away from home at the likes of Boro, WHU, Brum & Blackpool. Why would anybody think we could win these games when we can't beat Bristol City or Doncaster? I received a host of abusive private messages for expressing my opinion and my reasons behind it. Eventually the thread was removed by the mods.

I'm just wondering if anybody has now grasped what I was trying to say? Too many injuries, tricky away fixtures, no sign of any quality signings and now our home form has hit a slump.

When will people realise that we are not going up automatically???

:lol::lol::lol:

I am absolutely certain that we will finish closer to 1st than 17th!!!

;)

1st, since our 'blip' when no other team really took advantage I have felt this.

Definitely not 17th!

Have to say I got that wrong.

No sh!t Sherlock! Never mind mate, stick with it but you'll also be wrong next season.

If Cestrian Saint isn't on a wind-up then he's either massively stupid, a bit mixed up in the head or just has a enormously misplaced air of arrogance.

"When will people realise we're not going up" indeed. What a thoroughly ridiculous suggestion to present as fact.

from a 50 year fan who started supporting Saints when they were in Division 3 (the first time around ).

It's football, its a game ! Sorry Mr.Shankley it's not more important than life and death.

Some people are worrying that we won't get promoted. Others are worried in case we do! . IF we go up, we won't be a success - or if we do it will only be short-lived ..and then we'll be relegated again. The Liebherr family will lose interest and sell us off to some Russian oil mogul, or a mafia -type...

STOP! GET A LIFE ...it's only a game, and people are dying in Africa. Listen to Nigel Adkins. We take ONE GAME AT A TIME...OK?

Wtf?

Should we only discuss starvation in Africa on this forum from now on because it's more important.

Of course it's only a game. But this forum exists for people who treat that game as something of an obsession.

Is that okay with you?

I'm not looking to discuss starvation in Africa ..I'll delete that part if that offends you - and don't you think Saints are an obsession for me ..after 50 years?...but we have to be philosophical at the same time. I just think we ought to keep some sense of proportion - don't you ?

I think virtually everyone on here does have some sense of proportion.

It's a hobby/pastime/obsession we are all pretty addicted to.

I'm delighted Nigel and the team are taking it "one game at a time". But most fans don't. I'm looking at all the remaining games as something as a batch rather than thinking only about our chances against Blackpool.

Obviously, anyone who has filled in the BBC predictor isn't taking it one game at a time really, are they?

------------------------------------------------------------

I think we're on the same wavelength, but having grown up with the fateful story of 1948/9 (nicely highlighted on here last week) I've always tried to concentrate on one match at a time, something that has haunted us a bit this season. I don't think that anyone thought we would go unbeaten the whole season (JOKE ), but after our whirlwind start and especially the results v. Leeds, Ipswich, Brum, Wham and Middboro'...who'd thought we would have come unstuck against Brizzle (TWICE) and Donnie (OK, I know Billy got their goal that day).

Definitely, some humbling moments and a caution to keep feet firmly on the ground, which is why - with some reservations - I feel a little more concerned about our remaining home fixtures - rather than the aways.

Staying focussed seems to be another favourite Adkins-ism that we might all do well to remember.

I agree that the (type of) BBC Predictor can be a dangerous tool in the hands of some of the " chicken-counters " on the site.
